Dredd (2012) Let's make this clear,
Judge Dredd (1995) is diametrically opposite of
Dredd (2012) in so many areas. I know people will want to compare, but I think it's a waste of time. Talking apples and oranges. Dredd is a serious perspective depiction compared to the campy/humorous 1995 version. From what I understand the Dredd version is faithful to the UK comics. And that's fine. I liked it for what it was. I liked Judge Dredd for what it was.
I also get the comparisons to The Raid: Redemption. Dredd and his rookie Judge Anderson go investigate a triple homicide at a block. We learned from the other UK film Attack the Block that a Block is a building structure, that for the most part takes up a city block. Anyway a gang runs the block and a lock down occurs with the sole intention to kill the two judges. So another cat and mouse game occurs in the setting of one tall building. The violence is extreme. Bloody, gory and in ultra slo-motion at times. They incorporated a cleaver idea of distributing a slo-mo addictive drug as the gangs income. Time suddenly slows down in the users mind. This brings some almost poetic, surreal deaths.
I thought the pacing was excellent. The characters fun to watch, even the bad guys. I thought it was a bold move to have Dredd never reveal his face. At first I was thinking eyes express so much... but in this case a judge is supposed to engage justice and by having a faceless judge it takes away, yet adds a different dimension to the character.
I highly recommend a watch if you like action movies in this caliber. Watch it without prejudice.
