Oz the Great and Powerful

two stars for nice attempt... try again

I had very little hope for Oz the Great and Powerful when I slipped it in. I thought the trailers looked like they were catering to children and the one sheet has been one of the most memorable awful pieces of trash  I’ve seen in a long time. My only hopes were this is a Sam Raimi film and I heard it made lots of money. The later not being of real importance.

Well, the movie may have made lots of money, and I can only guess because of the hype. Otherwise I found myself, as I thought I might, wondering why I’m spending time watching this. Hey, when the highlight of the movie is wondering when it goes from black & white/small screen to color and large screen, that does not say much for the movie as whole.

I thought James Franco was over-acting to achieve the Disneyish character of scam artist Oz. Once he gets into Oz, for some reason everything is hyper-colorized. Garish. Obviously Raimi was trying to drive a point, but I thought it was unnecessary. It kind of reminded me of that over the top Batman movie with the colors and neon.

Also with the fantasy world, I thought they really tripped up with the special effects and sets. The sets looked, well, like a Hollywood set. Lets move from this pond set to this waterfall set, to this daisy field set. I about did a double take when Oz (Franco) and the Good Witch (Kunis) were walking through the daisy field. It was so incredibly off… I rolled my eyes. It doesn’t get any better when they get to the Emerald City.

Honestly when Oz gets to Oz and in color, it just falls flat. I had very little interest in CGI talking monkey or china doll. It lost my interest and I turned it off half way through.
