The Avengers I didn’t expect much and pretty much got what I expected. Then again, I’m a fish out of water. Not really getting or understanding the super hero genre. The Avengers just confused me more by presenting a huge leap of faith by accepting this team of crime fighters from vastly different backgrounds, time, worlds and philosophies.
I really enjoy the Ironman movies. I enjoyed Thor and for the most part enjoyed Captain America… on their own terms. It’s the bringing together the characters that lost me.
I really could only relate to the human characters like Stark, the girl and the archer guy. But even then I didn’t understand their skills and part of the story. Starks dialog was witty, biting and satirical. As genius as he is and makes the most logical sense, I don’t get how he just accepts Thor, Hulk or Captain America. I found that completely contrary to his character.
My favorite scene are when all the Avengers are in the lab, blaming each other. Great comments and perspectives. I just wish the whole movie had that kind of deeper meaning and dialog. I found the Avengers, just a light coating of story of a bad guy from another world planning on conquering the world and only a hint Nick Fury might have some dark secrets. It’s a pretty shallow story, just waiting for the action scenes.
So now that it’s clear I’m not able to fully appreciate this genre of movie storytelling, let’s just get to the movie itself. It’s gorgeous. The sets are gorgeous and epic in size. New York backdrop, flying aircraft carrier, jets, city block size flying metallic creatures, alien armies. And pretty much all this gets pretty torn up or destroyed.
To me the 3rd act of the movie was let’s just throw every conceivable action, graphic, special effect we can. Ramp up the chaos to a maddening pace and visual. I felt it was like the Transformer movies, where even a large screen could not hold everything going on. I’m sure this was a wet dream to those who love this genre. It just made me watch the clock.
The movie is obviously not for me, so take my opinions with a HUGE grain of salt. I suggest a rent.
