The Avengers

I didn’t expect much and pretty much got what I expected. Then again, I’m a fish out of water. Not really getting or understanding the super hero genre. The Avengers just confused me more by presenting a huge leap of faith by accepting this team of crime fighters from vastly different backgrounds, time, worlds and philosophies.

I really enjoy the Ironman movies. I enjoyed Thor and for the most part enjoyed Captain America… on their own terms. It’s the bringing together the characters that lost me.

I really could only relate to the human characters like Stark, the girl and the archer guy. But even then I didn’t understand their skills and part of the story. Starks dialog was witty, biting and satirical. As genius as he is and makes the most logical sense, I don’t get how he just accepts Thor, Hulk or Captain America. I found that completely contrary to his character.

My favorite scene are when all the Avengers are in the lab, blaming each other. Great comments and perspectives. I just wish the whole movie had that kind of deeper meaning and dialog. I found the Avengers, just a light coating of story of a bad guy from another world planning on conquering the world and only a hint Nick Fury might have some dark secrets. It’s a pretty shallow story, just waiting for the action scenes.

So now that it’s clear I’m not able to fully appreciate this genre of movie storytelling, let’s just get to the movie itself. It’s gorgeous. The sets are gorgeous and epic in size. New York backdrop, flying aircraft carrier, jets, city block size flying metallic creatures, alien armies. And pretty much all this gets pretty torn up or destroyed.

To me the 3rd act of the movie was let’s just throw every conceivable action, graphic, special effect we can. Ramp up the chaos to a maddening pace and visual. I felt it was like the Transformer movies, where even a large screen could not hold everything going on. I’m sure this was a wet dream to those who love this genre. It just made me watch the clock.

The movie is obviously not for me, so take my opinions with a HUGE grain of salt. I suggest a rent.

#30 on the wait list. Knowing your disdain for Superhero flicks, Imma take your review with a grain of salt, pepper and sand paper.

Think Like a Man

This just blew me away with just constant humor and sharp writing. Typically movies like this come out of the gate very funny but loose steam halfway through. I found myself laughing out loud to the end. The quick dialog, great characters and comedic actors made this so much fun to watch. Hey it had two of my fav comedians Kevin Hart and Romany Malco. When these guys were on the screen, they just stole the lines.

And the fine, fine women had my heart pounding from their beauty. Of course my girlfriend Gabrielle Union was a big part of it. Though they delivered the straight lines, they perfectly set up the men for the funny.

5 friends with different women issues, Momma's Boy, The Player, The Non-Committed, The divorced man, all had great lines, some so rapid fire, it was difficult to keep up with.

I highly recommend this. Consistently funny and charming through out.

Snow White and the Huntsman

I guess I'm finding fantasy films for the most part are just not my thing. I thought this looked good, but just left me bored despite some very cool magical scenes. The characters were OK. Charlize Theron was awesome. Chris Hemsworth was OK, Kristen Stewart I just don't understand the praise. She's got one look of angst and that's pretty much it throughout the film.

I gave it an hour, but after little happening, I started to NOT watch it. I feel asleep the last half hour. I can't recommend this at all. Wasn't fantastical or interesting.

Lola Versus

This was not a horrible film, but it wasn't much more than movie on CW or Lifetime. The constant struggle of a woman after her fiance calls off the wedding. Just about every situation has been shown in any movie before. Zero surprises.

Not bad, not good.

Finally, I got to see this...

Art of Flight

Probably the most artistic gorgeous film I’ve witnessed. If you watch the ‘Making of’ it becomes obvious why. The makers of the film invested in some of the best Cineflex camera’s available and used every method available to make the footage just awe inspiring. The technique’s (slow-mo, ultra slow-mo, helicopters, RC copters, cranes, attached camera’s, etc are mixed and balanced throughout.

I believe filming snow landscapes has its shares of challenges, but these guys captured it perfectly.

This is more an art film than a documentary. Pretty much just capturing amazing moments. Its artistic filming where they are capturing these athletes performing on a backdrop of earthly snow canvases, few humans get to see.

The snowboarders: These guys are true athletes and I now know what No Fear means. Jaw dropping stunts down the side of mountains.

I’m sure some people are confused by the title of flight, especially if they are not familiar with snowboarding, but flight is demonstrated in so many ways here. The hang times these guys get are just tremendous.

For a snow boarder, this is a wet dream of a film. I loved it despite I will never do it or want to do it. It was just amazing to watch. It did feel a little long towards the end, but that’s a very small nit. Most of the music fits nicely with the editing. There was one song just annoying.

Very little talking except for some comments and a voice over. The movie is all in the visuals.
