Killer Joe

From rottentomatoes...
Quote
Violent, darkly comic, and full of strong performances, Killer Joe proves William Friedkin hasn't lost his touch, even if the plot may be too lurid for some.

I found William Friedkin's Killer Joe not comical in any way. I have no idea what they were seeing, except some really stupid southern rednecks that don't even know how to read, let alone arrange to hire a killer for their ex-wife/mom. This is a dark movie, but that did not entertain me at all. I watched the first hour in a slow as molasses pace and wondered why I'm watching it. Maybe I'm missing the point of the film. Maybe I just don't like Matthew McConaughey much. Either way, this reminded me of when we hear about criminals so stupid, they get easily caught. We see in news blurbs and it's interesting for 3 seconds. Yes, this one presents a very dark police/hired killer angle and McConaughey does a good creepy job... I just was not entertained by this flick in the least.

I just noticed the NC-17 rating... don't get that?

Doomsday Book

Doomsday Book is South Korean film that consists of 3 vignettes  by 3 different directors tied together well, by Doomsday. The first story Brave New World is the zombie apocalypse attempting at least to trace the virus from the very beginning and watch it evolve into general public. It really tries to present it as a realist perspective like Contagion did vs. all the zombie movies already out there.

The Heavenly Creature I found to be the most interesting in story telling. The future holds robots are everywhere for just about every human need. One particular robot is bought my monks and learns everything about Buddha and Buddhism. So much so the monks believe Buddha is the robot. The robot creators and the technician have slowly realized the danger in robots becoming self aware. I especially liked the argument that develops between the tech and the robot. I kind of think it's like suddenly realizing your have a major discussion with a puppet and your getting sucked into the illusion. The photography also stand out as the best.

The third vignette is Happy Birthday about a young girl who may have accidentally ordered a destruction of Earth by Aliens. It has cuteness and humor and is way over the top, but not so much to dismiss the entire film. It's fun and strange and weird, but does not distract enormously.

The trailer mixes up all the stories, but the movie is not that way. Doomsday Book is 3 distinct full stories only separated by fade out/fade in.

Yeah, that's annoying and odd... why be square when everything is wider now?  Doesn't make sense.

Hotel Transylvania

I love monster movies. This is such a treat to see a something paying homage to, but in a hilarious way to the monsters of old. I laughed out loud plenty of times throughout. It consistently stays fun and funny from beginning to end. I truly had a grin on my face the whole time.

They don't waste a second in this movie to get through the comedy. It's extremely fast paced. I imagine to keep the kids glued, but dayum, there is a ton there I know they didn't understand. I have to watch this again, because I know I missed some. While different than Frankenweenie and Paranorman, I think they are in the same genre. Hotel Transylvania is by far the best.

I believe this is the first movie with Adam Sandler I've watched... and liked (grin). Honestly, even when I looked up the voices, I still could not hear Sandler's voice in the count. He did a fantastic job.

"Seven Psychopaths."  Totally dug it.  I held off on seeing it in cinemas because I knew I would want to rewatch it again a few days later... or right after, and I didn't like the idea of waiting for the disc to see it again.  So... patience.  And I'm glad I did, I rewound parts to watch again.  Great cast... and I feel like all the parts were written FOR those actors, so it all feels natural, and of course I love Christopher Walken... he's better in this than anything else recently and while I don't want to spoil anything, Walken does something in the graveyard scene that I expect to be GIFed and tumblred to eternity.
