Back into "Going Berserk," he was just "alone with his thoughts" in front of that cruise ship.  Brilliant.

Gawd I miss John Candy.

I forgot to mention that I watched "Somewhere in Time" the other night.  Didn't realize it was Richard Matheson but of course it makes sense.  I had a few issues with it but I liked it... especially Arthur, I love that dude, he was popping up in everything in the late 80s and 90s.  Couldn't tell you his name for the lfie of me but he's every old gentleman with a white moustache and mane of hair, he was in Home Alone, Planes Trains and Automobiles (see how this all connects), Star Trek TNG... he's this dude, with Dr C...

Started Top Gun so I can finally knock that off my list.

Mr Strickland being Captain of the Enterprise... that sentence should make my geek brain explode.

I can already see shots that Star Trek 2009 cribbed.  I'll be curious to see if Pacific Rim borrows from this at all (I had been wanting to do a Top Gun brotherhood-in-arms take on Power Rangers for a while, actually-- was inspired by the remake of Battlestar Galactica).

BTW, did we all see the pictures of the Jaeger toys?  They finally don't look like Iron Giants.

30 minutes left in Top Gun.  We're still mourning for Goose (which I knew was coming because they said as much in Meet The Parents, if you recall).

Not sure what's gonna come up after this, though.  And I'm not getting as many annotations as I thought.  But I do dig the flick.

Okay, Top Gun:

Well first, I don't know how much of that I'll be quoting.  And I'm not sure when I'll see it again, but I enjoyed it.  The all-practical nature of it totally paid off (not that you could really CGI it or anything in those days), doing the whole thing in conjunction with the Navy helped lend it an air of authenticity that you can't fake.

Can I say though, what I thought it would be about was a whole gaggle of guys at the school and that they would be balanced, even with Maverick being front and center that everyone, Iceman included, would have their own arcs and failings and so on.  It was really funky when they had the curtain call at the end and I barely knew any of those other guys.

I happened to see the trailer for Monsters U earlier so now I'm actually wondering if they drew any inspiration from Top Gun, I didn't see any but I wouldn't be surprised, with the whole top 1% specialized training and so on.

Also, a little geeky thing, the ship in the flick is the Enterprise, but they also used the Ranger to double for it.  In Star Trek IV, they used the Ranger to double for the Enterprise since it was out of the country when they were shooting.  So little connection there.

BTW, am I the only one who thinks that one engagement doesn't qualify Maverick for instructor status?  They just spent all that time and clearly millions of dollars training him, I think they'd get a few more years out of him to benefit from all that.

The magic of Scientology is that they can get anyone, anything they want....even if they aren't trained for it.

FYI, when they opened the new Drive-In Theater this past summer here, the first movie played during the Grand Opening was Top Gun. My guess is that they went with that because the aerial shots were filmed here. Drive-In pics here.

I'm watching this special thingie on Netflix about Graham Chapman, but it's actually just the making of an animated movie about Graham Chapman.  He had recorded his memoirs but started doing scenes, acting out all the parts, so the producers got the Pythons to fill in the parts so it's a cartoon about Monty Python starring all the Pythons.  Sounds interesting but I have no idea when we're gonna see it.

The strangest thing so far is that there's a bit about Sigmund Freud, and the role is played by Cameron Diaz doing a man's voice.
