Finally watching "Howl" since it's due to expire off Netflix in a few days.  I think I finally need to see "Hick" as well.  Although I keep thinking whenever I see Franco as Ginsberg with the beard that he's trying to look like a weird mix of Dan Trachtenberg and JJ Abrams.  If he says "manana" I'll be so happy.

I finally watched Hick and I liked it... Chloe Moretz was pretty darn good, of course, but I think I was just expecting it to be different or something.  Or a little more intense and wider-scope, it just seemed to be her in a set of cars with a small group of people.  I KNOW I expected Alec Baldwin to be in more of the movie.

No idea what I'm going to watch now.  I'm a little low on energy at the moment but not enough to warrant going to bed, but I don't think I've got another whole movie in me.

I barely ever watch the regular Star Wars, to tell the truth.  I do remember snippets of the Christmas special though.  But having said that, I'm not in the mood to squint through low-res digitalization.

I find myself revisiting Fry and Laurie quite a bit.  Which is fine, but boy I wish there were more than four 6/7 episode series.  Come on!

Finally watching "The Queen Of Versailles."  My friend Tess and I constantly swap around sites about mansions ("this is the kind of place I'm going to get" we joke) so natually this movie popped up.  I'd actually been meaning to watch this for a long time and finally decided to do it tonight.

Part of it sort of feels like an unfunny  white trash version of Arrested Development with the whole riches-to-rags story.  This family had seven kids, were insanely rich, and were building a one hundred million dollar mansion that was a replica of Versailles (or more accurately, the top three floors of a hotel in Las Vegas) with the fortune being made from the time share business, but then the market dropped and they lost a huge chunk of money.  And I believe this happened WHILE the documentary was shooting, that it wasn't actually intended to be about that and they just sort of rolled with it.

This is bringing up all sorts of opinions about wealth and lifestyle from me which I'm sure would bore you all, but one thing I noticed (outside of the fact that cartoons seem to be playing every time they go into the guy's home office) is that every time I see people in reality shows (or even Entourage for that matter), it seems like I've never seen anyone in a mansion know how to LIVE in a mansion, like, I don't think the size of the house naturally upgraded according to their needs, so they don't know how to use the space.  It kind of looks like a kid wearing his dad's suit, you know what I'm saying?

Oh my god, I see more dog poop in this movie than I do on my daily walks!  And all indoors!  I think that in addition to making you think more about money, about the state of the haves and have nots and financial regulation, I think it'll ALSO make you appreciate the "pick up after your dog" law in a far more favourable light.  It actually makes reminds me of the ACTUAL Versailles, since they didn't have lavatories in there, PEOPLE would just poop in the halls.  I can't believe I didn't think of that earlier.

Followed "The Queen of Versailles" with "Client 9: The Rise And Fall of Elliot Spitzer" which I thought was just going to be about the **** thing but wound up being a bit more nuanced, starting with his time as attorney general, taking on Wall Street as they were engaging in risky and fraudulent behaviour (the big crash was a few months after he resigned, they remind us) and how is aggressive style didn't serve him as the Governor, putting the whole scandal into more context.  I found it much more interesting than I thought it would be.

I just read your season four review and I realized I don't remember what happens in ANY season of Mad Men.  I mean, I remember the show and events but I honestly couldn't tell you what season anything important happened (or even some of the important events).  It's almost like mood more than something I actively engage in.  I do like it quite a bit but I'm hard pressed to explain it.

The show is definitely better served in watching them in blocks. If I had it my way and I was patient enough, I wouldn't watch any of the episodes until the series was done so I could get them all at once. But, that's never gonna happen.........

Jack Reacher

I like Tom Cruise movies for the most part. He seems to know how to pick worthwhile entertaining stories to tell. Beyond the trailer I saw months ago, I knew absolutely nothing about Jack Reacher. Apparently a character by Lee Child, who I have never read, developed a huge man not to be messed with. This seems to really put a lot of fans of Reacher off, since Cruise does not fit the stature of said character. This had zero impact on me. So Cruise focuses on the myth and his perceived actions Reacher is. I was rather surprised at the final product of this flick. Some majorly stupid lines and many times it really appeared they were reading directly from cue cards. The acting had a lot to be desired. I thought Rosamund Pike as Helen was quite horrible. She had one expression on her face the whole time. It seemed to be of surprise/what is going on/I can't believe this look. I find her to be quite distracting in the negative sense.

The action and character were Hollywood to the nth degree. Popcorn stuff I will forget very easily.

One of the few films by Cruise I have no desire to watch again.
