Oh yeah, your Kristin Bell fix...

Because it was about to expire, I decided to watch "Mornign Glory" and I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked it.  First, I was amazed that it was a Bad Robot production (lens flares in the opening titles), but the whole thing felt like an upbeat 80s comedy, Working Girl-style (which I now remember Harrison Ford was in, right?) without feeling dated.  And I'm not a big chick flick guy, but this was totally enjoyable.  And Rachel McAdams is so adorable, I don't remember the last thing I saw her in but she was just scrappy and plucky and what you WANT yoru FMC to be without it feeling forced, she felt very natural.

And of course, Harrison Ford is great, just surly and grumpy and growling, spends almost the entire movie glaring and spitting venom, I almost forgot he was in the movie until he showed up.

OK, let the ****storm of *meh to bad movie watching begin.

* One was better than meh

Let's start with...

Beautiful Creatures

IT was pretty early on you could tell this movie was clearly aimed at tweens and following in the footsteps of fantasy Twilight. I just found it a bore. The lead character Alden Ehrenreich Picture    with a thick heavy southern drawl a complete nuisance. Not only in his voice, but his character. The only other standout character was Jeremy Irons with his cool mysterious aura. My brain checked out 20 minutes in an could care less about the rest. My wife liked it. She likes movies like this and twilight and any other chick flick no matter how bad (Sex In the City 2).

Faces in the Crowd

Well I thought this would be a enjoyable film since it has my girlfriend Milla Jovovich. But sadly, even she could not save this ho-hum, been there, done that thriller. Milla's character not only witnesses a murder, but the attacker attacks her, sending her over a bridge causing her head trauma and she can no longer recognize faces. Even her own. While that kind of condition is interesting to think about, it did not produce a very engaging movie. It has so many cliche's with cops and cover ups and medical conditions. It was frustrating to sit through.

I can't even recommend this. It's produces well, but you will forget about seconds after turning it off.

The Master

So this movie is getting all kind of praise. I thought the trailer was interesting... so why not.

I was open to anything sitting down to watch this. I didn't read the synopsis and besides the trailer, which really doesn't tell anything, I knew nothing going into this. Well after watching 30 minutes of bizarre behavior by Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman, who spouted sentences no man would ever say in everyday conversation, had my head scratching. I literally had no idea what was going on and I wasn't about to waster more of my life waiting, if ever, for anything to happen. I may have missed the greatest movie ever, but I'm not worried.

Now seeing that this was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. it's pretty clear I'm not a fan of his material

Stand Up Guys

With a movie that has  Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin, you would think, what could possible go wrong. Well, let me tell you. A lame ass story of some very old criminal guys. Watching Pacino and Walken was worse than watching puddles dry up. They were old, acted old, looked old and had zero of my interest. The dialog was WTF. Very slow with some pathetic characters. It was like visiting a senior citizen lunch. After watching Pacino first start out as a tired ex-parole then pop a few boner pills do get laid, it was just embarrassing. Walken looked embarrassed. I don't know what it was about this weekend of these WTF movies, but it was very disappointing. And I had not even got to what I expect to be the weirdest movie 'Cloud Atlas'. My head will probably implode from the vacuum of nothingness.

Hell Arkin, did even show up within the 25 minutes or so. Maybe he would have changed the direction. Maybe he would have slowed it down even further.

I'm beginning to think these movies are geared for the geriatric crowd. When Harry Brown came out, I thought I remember them saying this was great movie for Michael Caine. Maybe it was, but for me, it was just slow and pathetic.

But wait.... there's more.

And fortunately this had some entertainment.

Parker

Jason Statham pretty much does the same movie over and over. I know this going in and don't expect anything more... or less. This is exactly what you get. Shoot'em up, fights, minor love interest, blah, blah, blah. So if you've seen any of Statham movies, you've seen Parker. Based off of some book series, it just seemed suited to Statham. Jennifer Lopez was odd casting here. Most of the movie did take place in South Beach, and she did add some dimension to the relationship, but overall, I just thought she was eye candy. Not bad eye candy at though.

Not great, not bad.... worth picking up of an evening of entertainment.

About halfway through the new season of "Arrested Development."  Oh man, Christine Taylor still looks great.

The Last Stand

The Last Stand was the last movie I watched (all the way through) this weekend... It was a tad hair above mediocre. Look, I can accept the self deprecation of being old. The Story we've seen a million times. The cardboard characters who are instantly forgettable. The Last Stand is the first full length jump back into films for Ah-nuld. So let's do a shoot-em action film with small budget. Let's hope it was small, because there wasn't much here.

This yet another movie with old guys that look and act old. I should be cheering these guys on because they are my brethren, but seriously, even though Last Stand is not, I just found this middle of the road entertainment. The action was cookie cutter. As was the story you could see coming a mile away, as was the bad guy. I guess fanatics of Ah-nuld will eat this up and welcome him back to the film, but I was bored a lot and doubt I would ever watch this again.

I literally hate Johnny Knoxville as an actor. I have yet to understand him showing up in films. I liked Jackass on occasion, but this boys acting and presence in a film always brings it down a notch. I won't call it comic relief. Knoxville is just makes me cringe and found him out of place here even in the temped film.

I can't recommend. It's not great. It's not horrible. It's just wallpaper.

Cloud Atlas

I heard a lot about the chaos of Cloud Atlas. I never read the book, but I don't believe that would have helped me with this messy movie. I don't think I'm going senile, but I seemed to have seen lots of movies lately that fail to lead the viewer in any discernible direction until much after the movie gets going. I am used to films that pretty much develop a story quickly to give you an idea of what direction you're in for.

My anxiety was swiftly confirmed in the first 5 minutes. In 5 minutes, they attempted to tell 5 different stories, in 5 different time periods. With a variety of people as different characters... With zero clear connection. Maybe that clarity appeared later, but I had quite watching after 45 minutes of being totally left in the dark as to what was happening.

I usually pride myself on rather enjoying the more complex movies. Inception. Sliding Doors, Memento, Timecrimes... But if I'm lost for any length of time because the director/editor thinks it's creative, more so than adding to the story. Then the purpose is defeated.

Maybe, just maybe I'll attempt this again at some point. Right now, I just can't see 'wasting' 3 hours of my time and not be entertained.  :-\

Here is the extra long trailer.... still doesn't help
