Mama I started to watch Mama with my wife in the daylight as twilight and night came. It still scarred the hell outta me. Del Toro got involved with this immediately after he saw the
short film.
Actually we’ve seen bits and pieces of this story before, but it is put together so nicely with the creepy atmosphere, the photography, the music and excellent acting among the minimal cast here. The littlest girl, is by far the creepiest on screen.
Momentum in the movie starts out of the gate with a gallop and then just slowly gets faster and faster. I might take off a half star for the complete reveal of Mama. If they somehow could have kept the mysterious Mama from full visualization, I think this would have been near perfect. At the same time, I think the ending is somewhat a relief from the intense, edge of seat flick this becomes.
While the whole movie is atmospheric, there are a couple of scenes that make the hair on the neck stand up and the occasional scream.
Loved Mama. If you like this genre, I highly recommend checking it out.
