The Croods

The Croods is the latest animated installment from Dreamworks. Nicolas Cage as Grug, the father, Emma Stone as Eep as the very outgoing young female, And Ryan Reynolds as Guy, a young man on his own.

The Croods is as entertaining as they come. Fun enough for kids and mature enough for adults to enjoy. Everything about this movie was entertaining, from the characters to the story to the visually stunning animation and sets.

The Croods is one of the last human families on earth. The other families did not survive nature. As the earth is still changing, The Croods home (cave) gets destroyed. They come across Guy who is searching to ride the sun. This all turns into a family road trip to new destinations. And the adventure is fun. I do see the comparisons to Avatar.

While keeping a very nice balance of Neanderthal man and today’s language, it’s a great setup for all kinds of new perspectives. There is plenty of action to keep this movie rolling. I’ve heard complaints that the Croods is riding the coattails of Ice Age. I don’t see it at all.

I laughed out loud quite a few times and in fact had a tear at the end. Loved this flick and think you will too.

Will definitely check this out based on your review, but I'm stumped as to why I never saw any promos for this at all. Nothing. No trailers, posters, TV spots or word of mouth. This is the first I'm hearing about this. WTF!

Not The Messiah! popped up on Netflix.  I've been listening to this song over and over at this point, but really, the whole show is cool.

This is the End

To me, This is the End is the classic case where if you have some of the hottest top talent together in 1 film, it has to be good because of the talent that just oozes out. IMO, that rarely happens and the 'stars' still need to put their best game on to make good entertainment. While bits and pieces of funny do flare up, This is the End was rather frustrating to watch. Is it because I was expecting wall to wall funny? I dunno, but I could count on one hand a mild laugh and really didn't even smile or grin through the movie. It all seems to be an inside joke being self aware. There were many times I watched with a confused mind. WTF are they doing (mostly the drug trip).

What I did like is they seemed to portray themselves how a real person would react in most situations. That was about half the time. The rest of the time was Over-The-Top silliness. And that's pretty much how I would label this.

Silly.

I was mildly entertained, but really disappointed. I doubt I'd ever watch this again.

The Kings of Summer

The Kings of Summer is one of the more entertaining films I’ve seen this year. Maybe because it’s full of nostalgia for me. I could relate to most everything is this flick. Even the filler, yes, there are filler scenes, but it all related to seeing, recognizing those little things that made growing up in my teens amazing. Every character was unique and stood out. So well written. The dialog was just amazing, even down to the sarcastic gesture. I laughed quite a bit. Nick Offerman (Joe’s Dad) was a hoot. A dick, but a hoot. The script is so multi-layered and always something going on. And it scores big for surprising me at every turn. I would say you could watch it just for Biaggio, the 3rd man of the kings. What came out of his mouth always amazed… in a very strange way. Gabriel Basso (The Big C) is as good as ever and definitely shines, where he was character cast badly in Super 8. The Kings of Summer is a quirky movie, but I loved every bit of it. The trailer does it justice. I highly recommend checking this out.

The Hangover III

I went into this reluctantly.

I watched the original, but I must be in the minority, because I didn’t think it was all that. It was decent, but not great. Hangover II I heard was repeat of the original and not very good and that was true. Rehashing jokes makes the jokes non-funny. I understand it still made money. So do to studio formula, the trilogy has to be made. It will make money. Damn the quality. And that is true.

Watching Hangover III was the longest, most excruciating experience I’ve had in a long time. As my wife said several times how stupid this was, she continued to watch it. I asked her not once but twice, we have other movies to watch. Nada. So I had to sit there for 90+ minutes and watch something less interesting than grass growing. I’m not going to get into the details, except for one. This was all about Chow, and he’s not funny. I didn’t think any of the characters were funny this time around.

I wasted too much time writing this about this crap. I can’t even recommend this to a fan of the series.

A Haunted House

It is what it is. It doesn’t try to hide the silliness. While it falls squarely into all the other lame spoofs, I think it does so with a mocking attitude of the movies it emulates, and that just gives it some spice of entertainment that makes this not a total loss. A haunted House is only unique in the sense that it copies the filming technique of the Paranormal Activity movies with camera’s stationed throughout the house and the handheld camera. I went into this too with little expectations. It  does have a Wayan’s involved and I pretty much enjoy their brand of humor. This does not disappoint. The humor is immature and crass… a lot. Mostly sexual innuendo. There were two scenes that made me laugh so hard, I had tears. Yet 75% of movie is just meh. Not a total loss, but I sure enjoyed this a 1000 times more than Hangover III

Hangover II still leaves a bad taste in my mouth that seeing Hangover III is very low in my must-see list. If I happen to come across a copy and nothing else to watch, I will probably check it out. But I definitely don't have it on my Hold List.

Neither did I.

It was very weird, the library lady was stacking like 10 copies of it on the 'new' shelf.

I just don't get how that all works. I know there is hundreds of folks waiting in queue to see it. Why didn't these go to them?

Same thing with After Earth. Lots of copies sitting on the shelf when I know there is currently a high demand.

Consider yourself lucky. It's obvious that you Library system works differently from mine. Something like "sitting on the shelf", especially for a movie that is just released will never happen here. In most cases, the wait list for titles can get as deep as 200, and that's when it's just 'On-Order' which means the DVDs aren't even in the system yet.

I think for the most part it works like yours. But I do think individual libraries have a silo type business plan. They somehow can 'reserve' an item outside of the system. Just for their library.

200? That ain't nuttin' .  ;) Right now The Heat is at 800+ waiting. I remember Argo had 1200 in the queue before it became available.

On a side note: On thing I kind of noticed with my system are the upcoming titles. If it's not in the system, but I know from Amazon it will be available on a reasonable future date, I can make a request for that title. They typically send back a canned response of it's not available currently. But they must put me in the system for the request because when it does get put in, I am automatically added to queue.

So lately I make a lot of title requests by going through Amazon on their titles being released in the next month or so. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
