Inside Llewyn Davis

I'm not going to rate Inside Llewyn Davis, because I did not watch the whole thing. I wanted to like this, but it just came up short for me. I am not a fan of folk music, which this whole movie is about. We watched about 30 minutes, and it did a whole lot of nothing. The main character was just not that interesting to me.

BUT!!!!

The photography was nothing like I've seen before. Visually it was stunning. Soft muted colors that seemed to radiate in the scenes. It's hard to describe. But you will notice, it's different.

Well, I finally saw Frozen and... it was good.  I can totally see why this movie made ridiculous bank... really, my only real issue with the movie is "why wasn't there a musical number at the end?"  They were singing their hearts out the whole movie through, so just talking at the end was really anti-climactic.  I'm thinking it's because the realized audiences really wanted to hear "Let It Go" again, but they could have made a different version of it for the whole cast to sing (which would have been great, a song about isolation turning into a song about acceptance or whatever) or something like that, but... no.

I kept thinking of Wicked while watching this movie, not just because of "Adele Dazeem" playing a misunderstood antagonist prone to big musical numbers, but because the movie felt like it was executing a similar style, a more character and relationship-centric take on a fairy tale (centering on two similar-but-different female characters)... it hit the same chord without feeling derivative or redundant, not "the Wicked version of The Snow Queen."  That's really tricky to do.  AND it was aware of fairy tale tropes and played with them, but without being self-aware like Tangled was (incidentally, you can spot Rapunzel in the coronation scene, I was so happy with myself spotting that without knowing about it ahead of time).

By the way, there's no Making Of on the Blu-Ray.  It SAYS there is, but it's actually a song and dance number with (some) of the cast (including Kristen Bell, to sweeten the deal for Chip) that I'm assuming was done by Kenny Ortega (it feels like him), and there's a thing showing the artwork for the Snow Queen ride and adaptation from way back in the day, but there's no feature showing all the voices (meaning if you watch it with anyone else, they'll keep asking "who is that?" "I don't know!") or how they did the effects (the snow and ice are amazing).

This is on my Hold List, but I doubt that I'm gonna be seeing any time soon. Wait list is damn long and we don't have a ton of Copies floating around to cover all branches in a timely fashion. Sigh.

Yeah, and people will be hanging on to their copies for a while.  Believe me.  It's one of those "oh, have so-and-so come over, they need to see this."  People will be holding onto it until a family get-together so they have something to do and not talk to each other.  But knowing how good the movie is and that Disney DVDs don't drop in price, I plucked down the dough and just bought the thing.

Having found a video of the cast recording their voices, now I have the urge to draw the actors as their characters (particularly K-Bell).

Thor: The Dark World

I’ve said it before, I’ve never been too hip to the super hero movies. While I read some comics as a kid, I just never really got into it. But… with the deluge of these Super Heroes in movies, I’ve found a couple that stand out and entertain me, including the first Thor movie.

Unfortunately, the sequel Thor: The Dark World, did zero for me. I honestly don’t know what it is. They seem to be a lot alike, but that’s not what I’m groaning about. For one, I just didn’t care. It all seemed to be bark with no bite. Yes, the world was going to end… blah, blah, blah. Admittedly I did get confused and not understand a lot what was going on. With the 9 realms and people instantly transporting to a different place. It just became a loud, confusing spectacle. Yes, the eye candy was excellent and the scope immense, but bottom line was the story and that just makes Thor a throwaway film for me.

Frozen

Simply, I didn't think Frozen was all that. I get why it was and why it did so well, but Frozen just mildly entertained me. It was cute, personally I give it less of ratings because of the singing. I am just not into movies that break out into song on occasion. I thought the story was actually edgy, especially for a child. There's death and psycho's. Not that is new to Disney films. In fact all the classics had those elements in the story.

My take away, Frozen is like the modern day Wizard of Oz.

I'm not going to Poo-poo it. It just wasn't as great as I thought it might be.

American Hustle

This is going to fly in the face of critics and general popularity of the film. I didn't hate this film, but I sure didn't like it either. By the 2nd act, I checked out. I just didn't care. I watched the whole thing, but nothing, even the 3rd act hooked me in.

For me it was a combination of things. Based on events in the late 60's in a major city, the film captures that time period flawlessly. Problem is, I'm not enamored with that period of time. Actually I dislike it. That is one thing that nostalgia does for me. The fashion, the look, the feel. I thought the dialog was incredibly boring. The characters, well, let's just say, I saw Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Bradley Cooper acting. Meaning, I didn't get absorbed into the character. I saw those stars spitting out lines.

Muscle Shoals

I've known about Muscle Shoals ever since I've started to 'listen' to music. Typically is was from linear notes, or included in a story about an artists. I just was not sure what Muscle Shoals was. This documentary is meant to capture and present that. Unfortunately the presentation is slow, methodical, yet boring. Lot's of voice over work with the script and it just doesn't spark.

I really wanted to like this documentary, but it just didn't cut it for me. There are far better related documentaries that bring the noise and make it interesting. 20 Feet from Stardom, Sound City, to name a couple.
