I haven't finished it yet, but I'm currently watching "The Brass Teapot" and liking it way more than I thought I would.  It's a dark comedy about a poor couple (Michael Angarano in one of his most likable roles and the always interesting Juno Temple) who find a magic teapot that dispenses cash whenever they feel pain.  As you can imagine, it gets dark pretty quickly.  What's great is that it does feel like a Twilight Zone story extended into an indie film, with some surprise actors I won't spoil for you.

And also, this happens.

Machete Maiden’s Unleashed

Honestly, the title caught me. As it should. That’s what exploitation movies do. They catch you with the title and that reels you into watch the feature.

Machete Maiden’s Unleased is a documentary specifically on the exploitation movies of the Philippines. Most of these films had Women or Cage in the title (grin). I’ve known about these films ever since they came out in the 70’s, but I never paid much attention. I watched the kung fu and black exploitation movies like a mofo, but the Philippine flicks passed under my radar.

I really enjoyed this documentary. Tongue firmly in cheek with the people, directors and actors (Roger Corman, Joe Dante, Pam Grier, jack Hill, on and on), telling stories of what it was like back then developing and making these films. No blushing, just unashamed truthfulness about the business.

The Big Bird Cage
For just being what it is and good at it.

Well, after watching Machete Maiden’s Unleased, there is a bunch of this Caged Women exploitation movies available on Netflix. So I sat myself down to check them out. I was not surprised with anything. It was exactly as I expected. If you don’t know what exploitation is, then The Big Bird Cage would be a good primer. It’s all there. Cheap production, bad scripts, bad acting, lots of T & A. Pure Heaven. Ok, maybe it’s not great, but it’s good bad material. Pam Grier got her start in these flicks. Pretty bad acting, but then again, it wasn’t the acting that catapults her to stardom. There’s plenty of other characters to move the absurd plot along, and that just makes the movie that more enjoyable.  I would think watching these types of movies at the driven-in would have been the coolest way to watch them. But that ship has long sailed.

Note Sid Haig in here as the star and playboy type character. He's taken a diametrically opposite direction since then in his career.

The Big Doll House
Again, stars for what it is. Goofy exploitation.

Yet another Women in Prison/Cages flick. Not nearly as entertaining as The Big Bird Cage. I think it’s due to being less crass and over the top story. This leans more towards a normal film with mostly normal folks and it’s just not as fun. It’s still exploitation and sits nicely with the rest. More of the same cast of actors. Just different place, time and story. Plenty of T & A again to keep the eyes glued to the screen.  ;D

You know, ages ago I thought I should write a "women in prison" flick, sort of a modern day take-off of those old flicks, but I could never really get it "right," you know?  I couldn't figure out how to make it more than trash.  And now that we've got "Orange Is The New Black," which totally transformed and legitimized the idea of women in prison, anything I do would seem redundant.

Wolf Of Wallstreet

At 3 hours of movie time, this pushed my patience. Wolf of Wallstreet is not a bad film by any means, but I didn't think it was all that. This is hyper kinetic movie that just doesn't let up in excess. I got it the first hour. Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio) and his band of merry men pushed everything to the limit through excess and greed. The 2nd hour did the same... as did the 3rd. And everybody knows what's going to happen at the end.

I still don't get Jonah Hill's popularity. While he put way more of a character into Wallstreet than say Moneyball, that isn't saying much. The first second I saw him, I had to ask, what's up with his teeth. Just odd.

And while there is a ton of characters including 2 different wives, they all blend into 2nd fiddle and background compared to Di Caprio's outrageous character.

I really did like how this started out. I did, but then it continually repeats the same things over and over. If they could have cut out so much of the repetitive scenes, this could have been awesome.

At just an OK film, the 3 hours will definitely put me off to ever watching it again.

I've been waiting for this... I expected it to come in the mail yesterday and it didn't!  I'm still eager to see it, but since I'm racing the clock to finish all of "The Dead Zone," I guess it's nice that I don't have that distraction.

I'm annoyed to find out that "The Dead Zone" didn't have a proper finale, because they did the ending of the movie in an alternate reality episode (a very good episode), and I think all the other big movie moments were covered as well (the breaking ice, the killer cop who lived with his mama, etc).  Obviously not done as well as the movie, and Anthony Michael Hall is no Christopher Walken, but it's a nice time killer (and hey, there was an episode with Ally Sheedy, and they held a party-- where else?-- in their old school library).

Deathwatch

It took me almost 2/3 of the way through last nights movie for me to remember I have seen it before. I just didn’t remember anything about it. Nothing. It didn’t get much better watching it the 2nd time. It takes place in 1 day in 1 place. 1917 and a British Unit take over a German bunker and trenches. It a fairly complex trench system adding to the ‘adventure’. It is a very wet film where it rains constantly. Thus there’s mud everywhere. So not much color to this film. Mostly in brown’s and grey’s.

It’s a slow reveal that there is an evil unseen presence. One by one the men start killing each other due to a variety of reasons.

The production is very good. One of my problems was with the Scottish accents. Missed some of the dialog.

All said and done, I was frustrated with the movie. I won’t give away the ending, because quite frankly, I’m not sure what happened. It’s a tad like a Twilight Zone story in its core story. I just didn’t get it.

Hell Baby

I had seen Hell Baby trailer (Red Band) sometime ago and just laughed at the Catholic Priests characters played by Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon. Some of the other scenes made me grin too.

Unfortunately, much of the ‘good’ humor is within the trailer. Hell Baby teeters on some good comedy and a lot of bad. It’s not consistent. Some scenes go on forever. I had I hopes, strictly on the trailer, but all in all, Hell Baby is extremely silly. It is rated R with plenty of language, blood and gore and nudity.

This will probably offend many a Catholic. But hey, if they can't take a joke, f uck 'em.

I’ll recommend Hell Baby… with caution. It’s not all that. It’s not a waste. You’ll laugh, but sit through a lot of bad humor in between.

I know you said it's rated R with plenty of language, blood and gore and nudity, is this an intentional comedy? A parody?
