I still need to grab the first one from the Library. It's actually on my Hold List. Better late than never.

Into the Storm

I wanted to like this, even for its cheesy obvious rip-off of Twister and other disaster movies. This movie, forgive the pun, sucked. Wow, we are talking MST3K material here. The acting was rather funny in a sad way. The script was just ludicrous as hell and we have my favorite genre of hand held camera’s, which alone… that sucks, but the ever ridiculously stupid justification of video tapping everything. I really lost it when two kids are trapped under rubble and the family finds them, to have the brother do what? Help rescue… uh, no, video the event. WTF!!!

The special effects were half ass. Many a time, this was SyFy quality material. In other words, laughable.

I recommend not wasting any time with this unless drunk, stoned or housebound by a blizzard.

Journey to the West (Netflix)

Depending on your point of view, Journey to the West is the best or worst movie you've ever seen. From the director who brought us Kung Fu Hustle, which I love, come Journey to the West. It is jaw dropping in just about every scene. How does one come up with this stuff. The CGI is amazing. The visuals... amazing. The Story... I have no clue... just go with it. If you like the bizarre, you might want to check this one out.

Multiplicity (Netflix)

We watched the 1996 movie Multiplicity recently because it was nasty outside and my wife had not seen it. I still can’t figure out her humor. I thought this would be right up her ally on cute, slightly stupid humor. It did not. She found it OK, but lost some interest about half way through. She was not watching the subtle nuances of such a story of cloning. Michael Keaton was the perfect candidate for this movie. I loved all his iterations of clones. They dabbled with some of the complexities of duplicate humans, but for the most part glossed over seriousness of it. I’m glad I got to see it again after all these years. It was fun to watch.

Blue Ruin (Netflix)

Surfing through the ‘recommendations’ on Netflix, I ran across this 4 star movie called Blue Ruin. I’ve discovered just about anything on Netflix with a 4 or 5 star is what it is… good. There are exceptions. The counter works two. I will no longer waste time watching anything with 2 stars or less.

Knowing nothing going in can be interesting. This little indie did test my patience. I don’t think there was any talking the first half hour. We just watch Dwight (Macon Blair) go through some pacing, slowly growing in tension a plan of killing someone. The movie downshifts and we are slowly revealed what’s going on with Dwight. Another slow burn with tension until the last minutes. I’m glad I stuck with it, but it was a little too slow in pacing. There is a lot of surprises and it get unexpectedly bloody at times. Definitely gringe worthy. I would recommend it. If you like thrillers, which make you think, you just might like Blue Ruin

I'm watching Multiplicity now, and man, it's like they didn't even clean the film before scanning, there's lack pops all over the place.

The other thing that really annoyed me was the sound mixing, I missed os much of the dialogue because it was soft or understated.. I had to switch the subtitles on, but I only did that about 3/4 of the way through the flick.

Yep again.

I turned the soundbar up. There was only a couple of scenes that blew us against the wall.  :-\

Happy Christmas (Netflix)

Definitely an indie film that looks, sounds and feels like an indie film. Happy Christmas is small snapshot of time between in-laws around the holidays and it is about as boring as watching grass grow. Somehow labeled as a comedy, which there is none, this is just watching ordinary people go through ordinary motions. It was like watching a home movie. It was shot horribly and from what I can tell, it was semi-improvised. None of this warranted hooking me into devoting time to see what happens. I cannot recommend this anyone, unless you go for these slightly left of center melodrama’s.

Not Safe For Work (Netflix)

… was our follow up to happy Christmas, to see what might have some entertainment value. It worked. This is a nicely understated thriller about an individual who accidentally witness’s a crime in the building and from there it’s a cat and mouse game with wits. It wasn’t over the top action, or spy like skills. It was pretty much earth bound in reality. It was tense with a slow reveal. Time went very quickly. I would easily recommend this little thriller nugget.

So I'm watching a buttload of Stargate and we just had baby Grace Park in an episode, and the NEXT episode is the first appearance of David Hewlett's character.  He's played as a one-off *sshole character, so it's still pretty amazing that he wound up being a cast member on the spin-off.  We've also had John DeLancie as a guest villian in quite a few episodes, so that's cool.  Love that dude.
