Attack the Block

Lots of hype surrounding this movie, and after watching it last night I can see why. While it does have elements of The Warriors and Escape From New York, Attack the Block is fresh and exciting pitting street kid thugs (and one woman) against an alien invasion of some very nasty, blacker than night, with glowing massive teeth that will rip you to shreds - Aliens. The acting by a bunch of new kid actors was very believable. The aliens are done very well and intertwined in a solid action movie.

On the flip side…

I read the other day, discussions are on the way of how to remake this in America. Yesterday my reaction was of 'huh?', today I understand. Despite the skill, the story and it is a phenomenal alien movie, it suffers horribly, not only from a heavy English accent, but conversations that mostly consist of slang, and English slang at that. I literally missed the first 10 minutes of dialog, because I could not understand anything they were saying.
I then turned on subtitles (groan). But at least I now could read what I was hearing. But even with that, so much of the dialog was very specific to the English slang, and I was guessing at best what they were meaning. This really counters the otherwise excellent picture.

I can totally see them doing it over for the American audience. I just hope they focus on the magic that made this film, with excellent characters, street kid scenario, and attention to detail with tension, photography and light.

I give this only 3 stars, but if the dialog wasn't such a hindrance, the rating would be much higher

Yea, let me know what you think of it.
Maybe check out the extra's. The making of the aliens is very interesting. I like how the development evolved.

Captain America: First Avenger

I think the 40’s are one of my favorite period of time to watch in film. What I’ve been taking away from Hollywood’s perspective is a great balance of beauty, hope, America, progress and conflict. With that, the sets and costumes of Captain America are pretty cool (reminded me a lot of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow). The sepia tone throughout is a nice divergence from the typical cold blue palette. Chris Evans and Tommy Lee Jones keep this story alive. Other than that, I know nothing of the comic and this movie did nothing for me to see more. The first hour of developing characters I enjoyed, but once Red Skull revealed himself, it just jumped the shark for me. I really don’t get into the ‘evil’ characterizations like that. A lot of the action scenes appeared very CGI and stand out (they should be transparent), much like I saw in Spiderman.

Don’t take my word for it. I’m an outsider looking in.

I will still check this one out once my Library get's a copy. Personally, I have never liked the Red Skull character both in comic book form or movie.

Trespass

Wwwwwwow this was a horrible movie. The first 10 minutes seemed OK, and then... wow, the acting, just wow. Nothing really new by Cage, but was not expecting it this bad. I still can't believe Nicole Kidman thought this was a good idea. And Liana Liberato who just came out of Trust... acted exactly the same. Bad.

The script and direction are what truly ruins this film. Just a stupid unbelievable mess. If it was up to me, I could have easily stopped it after 30 minutes. For some reason my wife gave it 90 minutes before saying we could shut it off. By that time, it was done. The ending just confirms the idiocy of the whole film.

Stay away at all costs. This is time you would never get back out of your life.

I just knew something was wrong when I never even heard of this film before last night. Now I know.

Look, I like Nic Cage. When he is on and has the right role and movie going for him, it can be a fun ride. But that can be pushing it a little bit too because it's most likely a high priced E Ticket thrill ride movie with no substance to it. Lets be honest here, he is the most overpaid, over-hyped actor in Hollywood the past 20 years. He has more bombs attached to his name than Hussein, Jong and Bin Laden combined. So, I expect every review for his movie that makes its way here to have no stars.

I think his last great movie for me was The Rock. But this isn't a "substance" movie and I'll be the first to say it.

Well then you need to watch this to see him go over the top... again.

Just be prepared for all the other sludge associated with this train wreck.

The Roomate

... for me was just a guilty pleasure. It’s just cheese with some beautiful women (Minka Kelley, Leighton Meester). It has little substance, little tension, but still mildly entertaining to watch. I’d never recommend this, but if you should run across it, it won’t hurt you or make you feel like you had time robbed from you. It is only PG-13, so hopefully give you some perspective on what will be presented.

a good thing... I picked up on a song I really come to like "We Are the People" by Empire of the Sun. It worked very well in the movie.

Minka Kelly is the ONLY reason why I'm even contemplating renting this.

Mars Needs Moms

I remember seeing the trailer and loving what I saw. Illustratively it looked phenomenal. The humor looked fun (in a kid kind of way) and I put a mental note to check it out.

Well, finally caught it over the last couple of nights (yea, sometimes I watch movies over a series of nights in pieces). The graphics were great, but immediately I noticed this movie was created for the large screen. There is soooo much detail, it really gets lost when reduced to a standard size screen. The storyline was kept simple, with interesting characters punching up the story. But unfortunately one of core pieces destroying this film is the resurgent puppet, soul-less, creepy eyed characters and in this case, the humans look downright ugly. The characterization they attach to the boy is not engaging whatsoever. He seems lifeless in many respects. It’s really hard to capture a human in animation. It wasn’t horrible, it wasn’t good either.

Ugh... mortifying

Some times it's the only way to get through a movie that just isn't living up to the hype. I watch like this more than I'd like to.

So do I. I prefer to seriously watch all the way through, but sometimes it's not in the cards.

The Pit and Pendulum

A 1961 Hammer horror movie with our hometown boy Vincent Price. I remember all these movies when I was a kid. I think mostly from the atmospheric castles and costumes that were used so effectively. And in this case the iconic pendulum about to take its next victim.

Watching it again last night was one of those times where memories are best left alone. It’s like the old Frankenstein, Mummy, Werewolf movies. You remember them as cool, but come back and watch them now and they are not nearly as cool as you thought. That’s how The Pit and The Pendulum comes across. Overly dramatic, slow and zero tension. If you've never seen a Hammer film, this is fairly representative. Dripping in color and atmosphere.

I have not taken it to the next level looking through the movies for the same sets and costumes. That's what Hammer did to save money. Shot several movies at once, with very small budgets.

The Change-Up

I knew this was a hard R while sitting down. I also heard it wasn't very good. Well, thankfully I really enjoyed the movie last night. There are bust out loud moments and some moments of... Really? The first 3 minutes set the tone of the rest of the crudeness in the comedy. Ryan Reynolds always makes me laugh. There is just something about his face, eyes and timing that crack me up.

Thankfully this wasn't a thin veiled comedy but added the subtext of what would happen if you really did get a stab at your buddy's life. Grass is not always greener.

Leslie Mann is icing on the cake for adding comedy. Her delivery matches the boys. And Olivia Wilde... well just wow.

I highly recommend this. It is very R with lots of F bombs.
