I could spiel about my issues with Crusade, which I finally saw, but... I'm not in the mood to.

Last night, I checked out the "private detective" season of Archer.  I swear, every time I forget how funny the show is, and I wind up bent over laughing my butt off.  Having Patton Oswalt, JK Simmons and Keegan Michael Key as recurring characters was a great treat.

Right now, I'm watching the second season of Documentary Now!  All I need to say: Bill Hader as Spaulding Grey.  Dang.

Edit: Oh my god, there's an episode where they're The Talking Heads.  Amazing.  Here they are on Seth Meyers:

Edit again: OH MY GOD it gets BETTER!  Fred Armisen as David Byrne as TOM WAITS!

So, I have a pile of movies I SHOULD be watching but for the last few days it's been TV shows (since so many are dropping on Netflix at the same time) and the new MST3K.

I did manage to take a little break to try and watch "Dad's Army," which is surprisingly/unsurprisingly boring.  It's baed on an old famous British sitcom about the old farts left behind to keep Britain safe from Nazi invasion.  And actually, the real ones were pretty bad-@ss.  If England fell, they would have been the Maquis, the resistance, and they were ready.  But that never happened, so instead our memory of them is fuddy duddies pretending to be at war, which is what this movie feels like.  Which would be fine if it was funny, but... it's not.

It's got Bill Nighy and Toby Jones, which is the main reason I picked this up, but they feel wasted.  There just aren't enough jokes.

I don't know what I was expecting, but you know what I could have gone for?  An old fogey version of Stripes.  That would have been fun.  Then I remembered "oh yeah, just about everyone from Stripes is dead.  That's depressing."  But something like that, real screwball and slapstick, politically incorrect, ribald to a certain extent (one of them SHOULD be a dirty old man, hitting on the teenage girls working as medics and so on)... PERSONALITY, you know?  That's what's seriously lacking from this movie.

On top of that, Britain does WWII a lot.  A LOT.  And it gets exhausting.  But as the generation who fought fascism and created the welfare state die off, that stuff starts to be taken for granted.  So there's a real opportunity to explore that, how bad things were, how everyone fought to save the world, make it a better place and so on, and if we can laugh while we do it, that'd be great.

I'm about halfway done with it, I'm going to let it simmer in my mind and see if I can come up with some interesting ways to play with it, something to mash it up with... maybe it'll spark an idea.  You know I can't just let a bad movie be.

My backlog is starting to pile up as well. I may have to start dropping stuff that I watch live and just wait for the eventual DVDs to better manage this stuff. It gets complicated juggling Live TV and DVDs. Sigh.

You guys know that I try to hit up the local film festival every year... well, this year it's a no go.  And I was fine with it until I saw the list of movies (yeah, they're showing The Void.  How can I miss that?), it just made me wistful.

One big reason is that I'm working a lot (a lot) and I've got a proper holiday coming up, so I can't really justify taking a week off (or on-and-off) to live in the movie theater.  Plus, the schedule doesn't come out early enough for me to clear out single days for single programs.

But the other big reason is that they changed the venue.  For many years past, I could just drive five minutes out of my way and get there, no problem.  But because the theater is being renovated, they moved the festival 20-30 minutes away to a different theater with zero bars or restaurants around.  It's a terrible location, so here's hoping they move back next year.

While I'm sure that the big titles will get some kind of release, it's missing the short programmes that really bums me out.  They're always weird and different, and there's always a ton of crew and creatives there to talk to.

The War Doctor, Vol 3: Agents Of Chasr

Man, after this I only have one more series of War Doctor to go... though I don't think I'll crack into those episodes for another month or so.  After that, no more new John Hurt content.  Which obviously makes me sad, especially since his voice is just so pleasing to the ear (he also gets a classic "Doctor" retort, "I'm in charge." "Keep telling yourself that, in the meantime do as I say!").

I gotta give series three big props for bringing in the Sontarrans.  Not that I'm a massive fan of the Sontarrans, I'm just happy to have villains besides the Daleks in an episode.  I love the Daleks fine but EVERY episode?  I know it's the Time War, but still...

We also got to go to Earth for the first time in the series, which was cool.  Little things like that make this feel a bit more like classic Doctor Who, which I think is important.  The War Doctor is starting to become more like the true doctor, he doesn't retort "don't call me that!" every time, even the way he outsmarts the bad guys feels very proper Doctor compared to how I recall the first two series.

I'm hoping that the final series does something special... the kick of it is that since the War Doctor's story and the time war wrapped up in "The Day Of The Doctor" ... what can you do to give the audience a satisfying conclusion?

I'm still trying to carve out a good chunk of time so that I can finally sit down and watch the Doctor Who series.

You know, I found a bunch of reaction videos on Youtube recently of people starting the show for the first time, so you'e not alone.  It is striking though how women and men respond to different things.

The funniest of them though is this one girl, Bianca, she's like an exposed nerve or something, everything makes her cry like a  crazy person, it's kind of amazing.  "Blink" was particularly hilarious, just because all she said was 'b*tch," "Nooooo b*tch," "d@mn b*tch" ... it was like watching Jesse Pinkman was Doctor Who.
