I think I've spoken about this film before, but I rewatched it last night and I'm surprised that it actually stuck with me.

Room In Rome

I was always in love with the lighting and cinematography of this flick, it looks ridiculously beautiful... real life chiaroscuro, I don't know how they managed to pull it off, and of course I'm enchanted by Elena Anaya in the flick (she was Dr Poison in the Wonder Woman movie).  Partly by her adorable accent but also just because of the sheer force of personality she exudes in every moment of the flick.

It's hard to summarize the plot of the film without it sounding like a prono (two women return to a European hotel late at night, fall in love, there's a lot of sex, they're **** throughout almost the entire thing, and they use Google Earth a lot more than you'd expect), but don't let that throw you.  I mean, it may make you want to see the movie more, but it's not that kind of movie.  I think they may have gone above and beyond in every other category because of that premise, but the results... dang.  The skin practically glows (this is the counterpoint to "potato skin," something I deride a lot of flicks like Sucker Punch for having), you can see the slightest changes in light... there's a lot of darkness but it doesn't feel like anything's being hidden, you're not seeing a big wall of black anywhere.

Now, I saw this on Netflix and apparently the disc is really hard to get now, so I don't know if you'll be able to swing it.  But if this sounds interesting, see it, and it's one of those movies I recommend seeing in HD because of the cinematography and colour space that it utilizes.

Scorched

This is a flick from 2003 that I've had on DVD since... well, 2003.  The premise involves three bank employees (Woody Harrelson, Alicia Silverstone, and a third guy who's not a name actor) who each recognize a different weakness in their bank's security and decide to exploit it, and wind up robbing the bank on the same weekend.  That SOUNDS like that... Patrick Dempsy movie, I think it was... but it's not.  They're all completely unaware of each other.

The movie is... it's not good and it's not bad, per se, there's nothing that really stands out, and maybe it's a sense of familiarity that allows me to watch it.  And a sense of nostalgia.  It's definitely of an era, in terms of both the glut of indie movies of the time (which could also just GET known actors) AND the subject matter in particular.  This scene is about the most early aughts thing I can imagine:

It's a trope that's so unrealistic and probably a bit of wish fulfillment, but I feel like I missed out on never having the cute tomboy housemate who's in love with me but I'm too dumb to realize it.  I had to make a supercut of Rachael Leigh Cook in this movie, I was always crushing on her character (to steal a line from Frasier, "she's ounces of fun").  It also struck me watching this that I cannot get a bead on her voice AT ALL, I've always wanted to base a character on her but I can't figure out a way to do it.  It's like doing an impression, if there's nothing to build off of or explore, you can't do it.  I have that issue with her.

John Cleese is also in this movie doing a classic over the top villain.  That infomercial bit I posted above has always been one I liked, but I had totally forgotten about the girl scout cookies.

I love psychotic John Cleese... it's so strange that he and RLC's character don't have a dialogue scene together, that would have been great.

I literally watched it again last night when I got home from work just because I wanted something on in the background, which I think is why I keep it around.  I like a good background movie.
