Mom and Dad

I had no idea this was out already, I heard people going nuts about it , and of course the big draw is Nic Cage going nuts for 90 minutes... which isn't true.  He loses it halfway through the movie, which is fine (a whole movie would have been overkill), but it feels like he's not even in it that much until that second half.

The premise of the movie, if you didn't see the trailer, is that humans start savaging and killing their children.  Just their children, the other ones they don't care about.  Which is one of those premises that's so brilliantly simple it makes you wonder how no one did it before.

I liked it.  And I had no idea that Brian Taylor from Crank directed it.  You can definitely feel it.

The issues I thought I would have with the movie weren't there, which is good... but I still had some issues with it.  The main thing is that the daughter is the main character, and if you don't like her (or have a REASON to like her), you're kinda bored.  She was okay, not great, but I didn't really appreciate coming in that she was going to be the one I'd have to care about the most.

I can't really go into more issues without getting into spoilers, so I'll avoid them... but for the few issues I did have, I also enjoyed the ever-loving S#!T out of this movie.  Definitely worth a rent at least.

A couple things recently, but here are two wildly different ones.

Vanya On 42nd Street

I added this flick to my queue ages ago, so while I kind of knew what it was about, it was quite different than what I expected but also very enjoyable.  I feel like, had I known it was also a "My Dinner With Andre" reunion, I would have remembered that.  And I suppose it's technically a sequel as well, since they're playing themselves again.

The film... I don't even know how narrative it is, is the actors coming together to rehearse Uncle Vanya and hoping to gain some insight from it and from themselves.  I can't really say too much about it, but it's one of those movies I can see playing in the background over and over...

Two little bullet points about the film:

One, Wally Shawn gets angry in a scene, meaning he's more like the Wally we know in Princess Bride and Clueless and all that, but he screams "you ruined my life!" and since then, in my mind I've been hearing him do lines from "What About Bob?"  But I haven't recorded my impression of that yet.

Two, way back when I got this, I was ordering a block of movies and I think I mish-mashed a couple premises together, and after this movie I started writing down what I thought it was going to be, and it ballooned from there.

Game Over, Man!

When I write a movie, I'm obsessed with the idea of "get to," every scene should have a get to, "this is the scene where we get to do this," etc.  Game Over Man, while not a fantastic movie, is a great example of this.  I think just about every scene had something fun for the actors to do or for the audience to see, all the characters... even the minor ones... had some business that they could brag about,  "I'm the guy in the movie who does X.," I'm big on that.

And while the premise is clearly Die Hard, they also are very aware of it so there are a ton of twists and turns... possibly too many?  You're never left waiting for a scene to finish, which is something that drives me crazy in movies.

The movie is also full of character actors I like, which is always a bonus, and oh man, the hotel manager... he caught my eye and I couldn't stop watching him, he seemed really familiar and I couldn't place my finger on it until halfway through: it's Daniel Stern.  Epic.

Better Call Saul, Season Three

Oh, Jimmy...

I can see why the writers were having trouble that season, there's just... tragic stuff going on here, the stuff between Jimmy and Chuck, what Jimmy does to get those old ladies to stop hating on that one of them, Nacho and his dad... you kinda don't want it to happen, but you know it has to.

You know what the tragic thing is?  Jimmy is a good lawyer, he's got a view of it that no one else does and it actually is helping reform him.  He's not particularly noble or anything, but I definitely agree that the legal profession needs Jimmy McGill.

And that Blockbuster bit made me so insanely nostalgic... though I was checking those cases to see if they had the holes for the yellow locks.
