I've been sitting on so many DVD's at home that I haven't watched in a long ass time. So, it's been cool to bust them out and mix them in with some of the newer titles I get from the Library.

Real Steel

When I saw the trailer for this, I think we were being misled of what this movie was like. And thankfully I was wrong. The trailer led me to believe this was some kind of Rockem Sockem Transformer action movie. Well, it has elements of that in it, but a majority and core of the movie is delinquent dad getting back with the son he never knew. It's the relationship that builds between the two over boxing robots. All very well shot and a story while balancing on sugary sweet, adds metal to keep this from making 12 year old boys leave the room. The story is not new, just putting a different spin on it.

It's a good family pick I think even a mom could stand. I'm sure many of young boy went into the theaters expecting Transformers. I wonder what they think of it.

I recommend a rent at the very least. It was fun.

The Legend Is Born: Ip Man

Totaling loving the original Ip Man and liking Ip Man 2 just slightly less, I was excited to see a third was coming. I knew Donnie Yen had no intentions of continuing Ip Man and pretty much shut that door, so the studio's decided to make a prequel of sorts. The early years of Ip Man with a strikingly younger looking Donnie To.

Disappoint comes to mind. This is no where near the caliber of the original two. In fact, the acting is pretty damn bad in places. The story has been done a million times before in the martial arts movies. Some bad guy of the village gives trouble to the school. There are other minor stories going on, but none get that interesting.

The fights are pretty good. Wire work is limited and that's good. Can't stand that stuff. The video is clear, despite the director of photography changing perspective throughout. It starts off in filters of brown, then turns normal color and then some scenes of intense color. A little weird.

I can only slightly recommend this if your a fan of the Ip Man franchise. If your not, you still might like the basic story.

The Legend Is Born: Ip Man

I've been meaning to check out the Ip Man series. Just need to set aside some time to knock these out.

The Thing

Well I thought I posted about The Thing when I saw it in theaters. Guess I did that somewhere else. Picked up the movie on DVD and watched it again. Same reaction. I was hoping like hell, this would be added candy to the already amazing Carpenter version. Sadly the directors homage pretty much repeated Carpenters vision. Same scenario’s but with way less tension. When I saw it in theaters, I thought they overused CGI. Come to find out in the extra’s how much CGI was used. Not as much as I thought. They just got very good with practical’s. It’s not a bad movie, but I don’t see a reason for making it.

The extra’s do explain the why and how. They backwards engineered from the clues Carpenter presented in his movie and thus made this theory of what happened. All the influences work, but I was surprised to see them leave out a couple of key moments that helped delineate this version. They are in the ‘deleted scenes.

Recommend a rent at the very least. If you’re a fan of Carpenters Thing, you may get disappointed.
