The Innkeepers

I can't really rate it because I was very tired the evening I turned it on. But sitting there for 1/2 hour and absolutely nothing happening, just bored me and test my patience. Some say it's patience you need to get goodness from this. But sorry, I don't have that kind of patience and can't see this worth sitting through.

I'd say skip.

Hard Rain

A 1998 film, but I like enough to watch on occasion. Caught it again last night. It's get several good cameo's. It's a different kind of heist. In the middle of an steady hard rain, where the dam is overflowing and flooding the town. This movie is 99% wet. I honestly would love to know how they did all the scenes which are flood. The characters are fun and Morgan Freeman as the bad guy is lots of fun. Betty White is a hoot, Ed Asner, Dennis Quaid, and the beautiful Minnie Driver.  For some good mindless action, check out Hard Rain

Another Earth

Another movie I did not give my full attention too. I mean we watched a half hour of it and again very little happening except news snippets of another earth coming into orbit of Earth. There was maybe 25 words spoken in that half hour from the characters. The camera work see-ucked, with the some shaky cam and plain uninteresting scenes. Gawd, sometimes I hate art films. I don't think this was a Sci-Fi flick, but more of a what-if flick. Nonetheless, I do have little patience to sit through these slow ass films. Dazzle me folks.

Bending All The Rules

Yikes, hit the jackpot with crapola movies this weekend. Honestly I saw this sitting on the shelf in the library with Bradley Cooper's mug and thought my wife might like this. This was horrible. This looked and felt like a students work. The camera work was of soap opera quality and the story was just mind numbingly stupid. This took approx 15 minutes to determine fail. Since I got it for my wife I had to wait for her to call it quits. I would have done it after 5 minutes.

Underworld: Awakening

I want to like the Underworld movies. The first one was good, the second just seemed more of the same. This 4th one, to me, was no longer Underworld, but a Resident Evil wannabe. With today's technology, you would think they would have mastered the Lycan look. No matter what, they stand out as half assed CGI. And when they use real effects, they look even more robotic.

All I could focus on was the awesome rubber outfit Kate Beckinsale displays.

Underworld: Awakening

This 4th one, to me, was no longer Underworld...

This is the 4th one? Where have I been? In my defense, I lost interest in the series after the 2nd one so I never cared to follow any news after the fact pertaining to the series.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale

Rare Exports garnered some murmuring and buzz when it originally came out of nowhere. And by nowhere, I mean Finland. Finland is not exactly known for their films. What are they known for… Vodka? Anyway, I honestly forgot about this thinking my library would never get this. Wrongo smegma breath. Suddenly it appeared before my eyes.

The trailer looked cool, so I was, er, cautiously excited. I mean, I thought the same thing about Trollhunter… which yes, was unique, but turned out boring.

Rare Exports is a beautifully shot flick. One of the sharpest I’ve seen on a regular DVD. The direction and editing was superb. The characters were unique and interesting, in particular the kid and one of the mysterious characters (I can’t talk about or it gives away a spoiler).

Rare Exports is a bizarre, yet wildly fresh and refreshing storytelling/perspective of Santa. Yes THAT Santa Claus and his Elves. From the beginning I was sucked into this mystery that was unfolding about a fairy tale character we’ve all grown up with. 95% of the movie is in Finnish with sudden bursts of clear as a bell English discussion.

For some reason I had the idea this was a horror movie. It’s not. It’s more of a fairy tale coming to a dark reality.

But…

… Unfortunately the last 20 minutes suddenly takes a turn and pegs out the ol crap-o-meter. Characters suddenly figure everything out, act on it in very quick fashion and then the last 3 minutes justify the title of the film. Not that I was wondering, but they put a nice little bow on it despite it having nothing to do with the previous 1-1/2 hours.

Not a big loss. I enjoyed most of it and recommend it for something different.

Chronicle

The trailer for Chronicle is a well crafted and instantly raises some interest in the film. It helps that the idea behind the film is refreshing as well. It’s the simple idea of what-if… teenage boys suddenly acquired super-hero powers? What would they do? Good things? Bad things? Go way beyond their mean and do some over the top stuff? Keep it a secret? All these things are explored. The added interest here is one of the kids, Dane DeHaan as Andrew, lives in a very nasty home situation and is abused. So we know mentally he is unstable. He is also very annoying, as is the other lead Alex Russell at Matt. Michael Jordan as Steve seems to be the only normal kid here.

But… we do see some hefty transformation of character as the story unfolds.

Some of the scenes reminded me of my dreams about flying. Some of the scenes were just cartoonish. They did rather eye popping special effects in many shots, but had a hard time maintaining that and some scenes are obvious cranes and wires.

Anyway, this film could have got maybe 4 stars, but I gave it 2 for found footage… Arghhhhh – enough already. I cannot tell you how my face fell as the opening scene sets up the whole ‘I’m going to film everything” scenario.

There are two major cons for Chronicle... I detest shaky cam. I’ve thought about it more. Maybe, just maybe I could handle the shaky cam if they weren’t so deliberate on amateur holding the camera. They can’t focus on the subject in the lens, they wander for no reason. They zoom in and out for no reason. None of this is natural. Our eyes and mind don’t do any of this. They keep a balance. So now directors are using the tool (camera lens) to put you in the moment. Well the moment is way too long and distracts away from the intent of the film.

Secondly, I detest the idea of someone filming everything including watching someone needing help, or dying or getting their own ass kicked. This counters the balance of giving the believability of being there/found footage perspective.

I'd say rent. Rottentomatoes has a generally good overall rating. So don't let my bias against Shaky cam skew this too much.  ;)
