Mad Men (Season 6)

Trailer

The Sixth Season of Mad Men had a lot to live up to, especially with the cliffhanger to close out Season 5 in Peggy leaving not just the Ad Agency, but in essence, leaving Don. My biggest concern going into this season would be whether or not we would see a noticeably smaller role for Elisabeth Moss who plays Peggy. Although there is a slight dip in her appearances overall, it's not any kind of deal breaker. The story that is being told in Season 5 pretty much affected a lot of other roles to a greater extent. January Jones, Christina Hendricks, John Slattery, Rich Sommer, Kiernan Shipka and Robert Morse all saw a huge drop in their story lines. At times they almost seemed like guest appearances.

Getting back to the Don and Peggy dynamic that has made what the series thrives off of. I should have seen it coming a mile away that they would end up merging Don's agency with Peggy's agency, thus bringing us back to square one. She may still have her job title of Copy Writer, but with her basically under the same roof with Don, it's like she never got her promotion. Not only that, this is kind of like watching Season 1 again, but she is more or less being treated the same way as she is having to prove herself all over again. Overall a solid season, but there were a couple of odd episodes namely the 'drug' episode where everyone is high and the Pete Campbell / Mother story arc was kind of out of left field. Still enjoyable. With Don now "fired" for the time being, I can't wait to see the final season which starts this April. Season 6 is definitely worth a Rent.

I can't decide if I want to start watching this. Still not hooking me. It might be my little quirk of that particular era not doing anything for me (See American Hustle)

Mac, it's definitely worth checking out. I was exactly on the same fence as you regarding the era it takes place. But once the series gets rolling, it's all about the characters that you don't really even pay attention to when and where the setting takes place. I love the series and I'm glad that I took a chance on it. You won't be disappointed. I have never seen American Hustle (yet), but that takes place in the 70's right? Mad Men takes place in the late 50's, early 60's when the series starts. The trailers and promo spots for Mad Men are notorious for not showing much of anything and is a bit misleading.

Totally dug the new season, zipped through it faster than I expected.  That Aunt Ida... that scared me.  That actually disturbed me a little.  I felt very uneasy.  Dang.  Unsettling.

But after finishing the show, I started telling my mom about it to see if she could fill in a few gaps for me (they mysterious car), and found out that SHE was working at GM AT THAT TIME.  She was THERE.  Mind blown.

Anyway, that led to a whole conversation and we wound up starting the series.  She'd never seen it before, didn't know anything about it, and I'd been wanting to see her reaction to it for years.

I was NOT disappointed.  Right at the start of the first episode when Don talks to the waiter about Lucky Strikes vs Old Gold, mom just started talking "oh, your grandfather used to smoke Old Golds, he got them when he was in the service" etc.   Then later on, Joan shows Peggy the "modern technology" typewriter and mom was transfixed: "I had that EXACT typewriter.  That was mine."  That might have been my favourite moment watching the show UNTIL the third episode, where she almost fell out of her chair laughing when BettY Draper makes those celery-and-spread party treats.  Like she heard a joke she hadn't heard since she was a kid, that was just delightful, I'm so glad I could give her that little moment there.

She dug the show (we're going to try to watch some more), she just loved all the little details, "I remember that, I remember those... YEP, I had one of those" throughout the whole thing.  It felt so right to her, a blast from the past, I liked that, not just having a reason to revisit the show (I've only ever seen every episode once), but to see how she reacts to it.  It was fun.

It was also REALLY strange for me jumping back in time, to see what the show used to look like with those stuffier old offices and more conservative fashions... and I totally forgot how funny the show was in the first season.

Of course, she expects very bad things for Betty Draper.  The whole thing about Don's identity they just dropped the first hint, so I don't think she caught on to it.

Very cool. I like that you got to share this with your Mom. My Mom is also a big fan of Mad Men as well. Aunt Ida is awesome.  ;D
