World War Z (2013)
« on: December 19, 2013, 08:51:46 pm »

Waited a loooooooooong time for my copy of World War Z to arrive. I was finally able to pick it up at the Library as it arrived today. Even though the reviews have been mixed about this one, I was still going into this expecting at minimum, 4 Stars out of 5 with the potential to be even better. Unfortunately, I think most people have gotten the review right this time around. World War Z is not a bad movie by any stretch, it just don't really take the genre anywhere new or at least give us something to really sink our teeth into (pun intended). I really don't have a problem with the first half of the movie. It is non-stop, wall to wall Zombies that are faster than Usain Bolt. It gives you something to look at, but it's all flash. There is no substance to what is happening. Too much of an 'Action' flick which isn't necessarily what I want in a Zombie movie.

It's not until the Plane full of Zombies and then later in the 3rd Act when Brad Pitt arrives at the W.H.O. does it really get good for me. Sure, you can argue that it's a bit too reminiscent of Resident Evil being trapped in a lab with Zombies. But this is where it's at its best when invoking mood or serious dread of being isolated with a room full of Zombies. I did like how he was able to become "invisible" and take that leap of faith that his idea of camouflage would work. So, World War Z is a case of two very different movies in one. Very uneven. Worth a Rent, but nothing more. I think another thing that hurt the movies "realism" is the fact that it's Rated PG-13. Who would have ever thought that a TV Series like The Walking Dead would show more gore than a Big Budget Hollywood flick? Not I.

Pretty much agree with your review.

Reading stories about the development of the sequel. I believe they have a director.
