Best Pizza Joints
« on: October 17, 2012, 06:02:57 pm »
So, What's The Best Pizza Joint ever for you? I have fond memories of certain Pizza places, some relating to actual quality of the food and other's more for ambiance. Some just SUCK no matter what. I'm talking about you Domino's!!!!

Pizza Hut was okay back in the last 70's, but I never really went there much. There were better places, much closer to home.

Organ Power Pizza was more of an Event and not so much about food quality. I remember liking it, but I remember the the little pathway for kids to crawl in to get into the Arcade and the Organ itself.

Mr' G's had awesome pizza and I spent a good portion of my childhood down there playing Donkey Kong and when my Baseball team won the whole league, that's where we celebrated at. It was actually during first year Pony League.

Papa John's sucks. Value wise it's a joke. You get nothing and you pay twice as much. Plus, their ingredients make me want to hurl. I have the same opinion for Little Caesars Pizza as well. It's not as bad, but still....

Chicago Brother's at one time was the IT place to be. The line around the building was a f*cking joke. Took too long to get inside and get take out. It was good, but to this day, I still don't know why that place was like Studio 54, with the crowd that gathered everyday there.

Filippi's Pizza Grotto was good back in the 80's and sadly, it was the last time I actually ate there. I haven't been there since then. I checked Yelp for local reviews and it's now one of the worst reviewed Pizza joints on San Diego. Bummer.

So, it comes down to a match up between Square Pan Pizza Vs. Mr. G's. I really love Mr. G's, but I gotta go with Square Pan Pizza as being the all time best for me. The crust. Cheese and Pepperoni never failed to deliver for me and along with Mr. G's, I miss having it around.

I only remember the back room at Mr G's...I really don't remember the pizza taste at all....did some pizza partys after baseball etc as a kid....but it doesn't really stand out in terms of the food for me.

Chicago Brothers I worked there for 3 years...they had damn good pizza....when Dominoes first came to San Diego I did like their pie...I was a kid...but I do think it was better back then.

I still love Filippis and it's still there....so it's cool because you can reminisce and actually go back in time (today) and basically walk into that same restaurant you knew and liked as a kid.

Swenson's I did love....but that's a whole other thread

:)

Explain to me what Chicago Brother's always had a line running outside and around the building. I remember the Pizza being awesome, but I still can't wrap my head around it drawing the crowds it had. As for Filippi's, any truth to all the bad reviews on Yelp. Some say it's burnt, some say it's under-cooked, some say they don't add any spices, some say that the sauce is horrible now and other's say that the turn around time averages 30 minutes for a Pizza. I do want to go back and check it out again, so I will let you tell me what to get that doesn't suck.

Good pizza is like holy grail for me. I've found only a couple of excellent pizzas.

Long ago there was a Nobel Romans that I could eat just about every day. Their ingredients were the perfect combination of tasty and spicy.

The 2nd pizza joint was Planet Hollywoods fresh tomato pizza. It was simple, light and so tasty. Completely different than the typical pizza. So that was vacation and I got to experience that only twice. I've been searching ever since for either kind.

I take it that Nobel Romans is a Mom and Pop Joint then? I've never heard of it. Definitely not a nationwide chain.

I think they were closed between 3 and 5 PM...so maybe you saw the dinner crowd lining up?

that would be my guess.

Deep Dish pizza isn't for everyone and a lot of it sucks...so when I tell people I worked at a Deep Dish pizza place I always feel like I need to say...they actually had very good pizza.

plus they had Ribs and really good Lasagna and Sandwiches....also a few really good salads.

man there salads were the best/ (the ranch dressing we made from scratch was so **** good

How often did you go to Organ Power Pizza as a kid?

hey at least it's still in a bowling alley!!

I'd take that to go back to a few of the places I'd been as a kid.

Chip I only went to Organ Power pizza maybe 2 times....I went for a birthday party or two.

once my parents split up....my dad was really out of it...and we didn't do anything...well he did...he got drunk constantly and left me alone, or he'd drag me to the bar and throw me in the back pool room for about 5 hours......but I was basically at home by myself, or over at my grandparents.

there was a Mexican restaurant he'd take us to on Garnet that was REALLY good though Pancho Villas.  It was right where that Japanese Restaurant is...by the poster shop (across the street from where the Warehouse was...can't think of the Japanese place that's there now...)

but that was good Mexican food.

Anyone ever been to Five Guys Pizza? Not sure if this is a National Chain or if it's just a local joint, but I walked by the place tonight and the pizza aroma was amazing. You could smell it a block away. What made it awesome is that it was vintage Mr. G's. When Pizza is done right, it smells like THAT and very few places have been able to get that aroma. It gave me goosebumps. I'm gonna have to try it out the next time I go down there.
