Car Rage
« on: January 06, 2012, 08:35:11 am »
How do you handle when someone goes into a rage in their car? I’m trying to figure out the best way to respond to such actions.

On rare, random occasions, I have suddenly found someone in another car completely losing it, going into their self-enclosed rage, apparently screaming, throwing their hands, fingers and screwed up faces. In the case this morning, it was clearly directed at me.

As I was coming off the interstate onto a major cross street, I stayed in my lane. I did not have to merge. It was dedicated fourth lane. Suddenly, this gentlemen coming from across the bridge merges behind me, already flying into a satanic rage. I for the life of me could not figure out what this dude’s issue was. As he continued to merge one more lane, he pulled up next to me with his continued head exploding and arms waving like an Italian telling a story.

I thought it was rather humorous and proceeded to express my thoughts with the ol jack off hand gesture… while grinning. He continued to merge off into a side street.

The reason for this post, is there something better to do with these folks? I can tell when I need to ignore and keep looking forward and act like nothing happened. That can actually kick it up a notch.

I can respond with the universal finger. That’s old

I can respond with the jac-off gesture. That’s getting old.

I’ve tried pointing at my crotch. I don’t think a lot of folks get that one.

I’ve thought about pointing my hand directly at their face like a gun w/ gun sight with a wry grin.

Anything you folks have done that might be fun to do?

I very rarely give into reciprocating rage with yelling anymore because that's exactly what the other driver wants from you. If you don't have issues with escalating the situation higher because you are one upping them and not giving them 'rage', you can do one of two things that ALWAYS infuriates them even more.

1) Laughing, which you have already stated.

2) Yawning. Look at them, let out a big Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn and use your hand to "cover your mouth" to emphasis that what they are doing is boring the hell out of you. I can't tell how this really gets their veins in their neck popping
