Christmas 2015
« on: December 08, 2015, 03:11:15 pm »
Bah-humbug

Try to do something nice, then it turns into a pain in the ass.

My wife said, since we were gone over Thanksgiving and back home just 2-1/2 weeks before Christmas, forget the decorations.... Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

So last night, while she was on a late night job assignment, I hung two Christmas decorations on our single tree out front. Awwwwww... So sweet.

But Noôooooooooooooo. She is out there tonight, in the dark and wants to hang ALL the usual decorations.

Phuck!!!!

Seriously, what the hell happened. It's dark. It's cold and I'm tired.

Dammit woman!

I'm still dragging my feet on presents, I wanna get this done as soon as possible so I can hunker down and enjoy X-mas.  But I have no idea what to get anyone.  My mom told me recently I always think of good presents, and I have no idea how, I always feel like I'm settling because I keep wracking my brain, stretching it as far as I can in order to think of something.

For this year, I'm determined not to get my sister anything hedgehog-gy.  She has too much of that stuff as it is and when Daisy dies (we had a little scare recently), she'll just have an apartment full of reminders.  No sir, not gonna let that happen.

The big thing that strikes me every year is what few shops I go to, I never make the effort to go do a distant mall or something, a big trek to get gifts that I couldn't find anywhere else.  I wouldn't even know where to look.  But I keep thinking "how can I expect to find something special on a place we all go to all the time?"  I still subscribe to that childish expectation that Christmas should be unique form the rest of the year, the gifts you give and get on Christmas can only come from that little narrow band of time, like it's a special little pocket universe we all fall into every year, a better one, where the normal rules don't apply and decency, kindness and going above and beyond in the name of love and friendship are the norm.

Sounds like your over-thinking it. Keep it simple.

Just think back to what those folks may have expressed their interest in. Maybe a tangent idea will materialize.

Well, our Christmas just took another big hit, grandma died.  90 years old.  Really hung in there.  Mom didn't even get to see her before she passed, but she and Em are going up to be with the family.  Zero conversation about the fact that *I* had to stay behind and hedgie-sit.  Drafted into the one-man sh1t-scooping brigade.

But this totally destroys Em's plans to go see dad and that side of the family, she was looking forward to it (and she would have had a great time), but she's also done zero shopping, so it looks like there's a chance we might not be doing Christmas at all this year.  Which is a real 11th hour turn of events.

Our family on my mom's side is weird, they're big but they're not close.  Mom left home at thirteen, if you can believe it, and the age difference between her and her siblings was pronounced enough that they never really got on.  So she's going through some weird stuff emotionally that's going to be tricky to navigate.  And Em, she's all gung ho about having a big family and being close to everyone, so... it'll be interesting to see what happens with her.
