So, with this sixteen thousand year long election cycle finally wrapping up, and with the general unfavourability of both candidates, MotherBoard ponders an issue that I'd been pondering in some of my sci-fi work:
Society is too complicated to have a PresidentI've often wondered how, in the information age and given how interconnected everything is, butterfly effect in real time, we're supposed to think or lead ourselves. Would we be comfortable letting a machine figure this stuff out? Would that still be democracy? Would we still have freedom? We could vote on the important values and goals we have, let the computer figure out the most ideal courses of actions, and vote for that. Or we could have like a controller-in-chief, who interfaces with the machine on behalf of the country. How much would we automate? How little? How could we avoid becoming that planet from the episode of Star Trek that just had wars going on for thousands of years in the computers, but requiring real casualties?
