The Car-less Lifestyle
« on: October 24, 2016, 05:07:33 pm »
And so it begins. Today is Day 1 of my Car-less existence. It's something I have been contemplating to do for the past 6 years. I finally retired my car today and it feels great. A huge massive boulder has been lifted off of my shoulders. The stress disappeared immediately. No more car insurance. No more price-gouging Gas prices. No more repair cost. No more worrying about whether today is the day it fizzles out in traffic. So, for the foreseeable future, it's Walking, Buses and my new Bike (I'll post a pic of that over in the Bicycle thread). I've read quite a few blog post over the years, weighing the pros and cons and those that are actually living their own Car-less Lifestyle and it has always appealed to me. So, how long will this last for me? Honestly, I don't know. I'm in no rush to get another car anytime soon. Now, if there was a steal of a deal and it was a car that I really wanted, I may look at it. But for now, I'm willing to try this new venture and see how it plays out for me.

One week later and I don't miss my car one bit. Just sayin'.

Exactly one year ago today I retired my car and got rid of a sh*tload of headaches that came with owning a car. It's crazy to think that it has been a whole year. It doesn't feel like it at all. I remember that day in such great detail, as of it happened yesterday. So, do I miss having a car? Absolutely not. The idea of of every owning another car really hasn't even entered my mind. Insurance and gas prices here is way out of line with the rest of America. It seems that we are punished financially for whatever reason. With that said, I may be inclined to look into getting a Electric/Golf Cart that seems to be all the rage here with people using them to zip around town real quick. But if I never got one of those, I'm okay with that too. Not a priority for me.

I just realized the other day that my Car-less anniversary was coming up. What I didn't realized was that it was today. Talk about perfect timing right? So, how are things in my world without a Car. 2 years removed and honestly, I don't miss it at all. I haven't even been tempted to look for a car at all. I'm so far removed from relying on a Car that I actually thought it had been 4-5 years without one. With that said, I do think moving forward I may actually actively start looking for some sort of Golf Cart/Electric Car kind of transportation. Something small and portable and doesn't take up hardly any room in a Garage. I mentioned that last time I posted in this thread, but other than maybe 1-2 days of just getting a feel for what one would cost, I never went further than that. This time, I may look a bit deeper.....but still don't have an overwhelming urge to actually own one at the moment. We shall see.

It's October 24....that can mean only one thing. 3 Year Anniversary without a car. Don't miss it one bit. With Uber and Lyft out there, really could care less about ever owning a car again. As for a Golf Cart...well, I'm still looking for one that will fit my needs to just get around town quickly.

I came by this thread on Oct 23, 2020. Was intending to come back on the Anniversary day of Oct. 24 and totally forgot. Well, better late than never right? Anyway, still no car and not looking to get one anytime soon. I'm completely comfortable without one.

It just dawned on me today that I was coming up on my 5 year anniversary (actually it was yesterday for the 5 year Anni.) with no car. And yeah, I think it finally has hit me that I need to get a car again. I haven't missed it like I thought I would. But there are just things that I'm finally seeing that I can't do without completely...like a Car. So, for the first time since retiring my car and trying this car-less lifestyle, I will actually keep an eye out for something that catches my eye. What that is...no f*cking idea.
