Google Glass
« on: June 12, 2014, 05:25:21 am »
So, I was thinking of what way I could go when it came to recording myself doing art and tutorials in Photoshop. They have programs that actually record your desktop as you work, but I've never really liked those because it's only recording half of what you are doing and excluding the live action stuff. Even though I've known about Google Glass, it just popped into my head that THAT could be the way to do it. Well, you can cross that off the list as well. Even though I've known about the tech since it came out, I had never gone any further than people talking about it. It wasn't until just now that I decided to see how much they cost. $1,500 on Amazon! WTF!!! What's the lowest price you think Google Glass would ever sell at Brand New one day?

I'm not clear on what you're saying here.

Wouldn't a Go Pro attached to your head, work about the same?

As in all technology, the price will eventually come down. It will be that magic moment when the price matches your need.

I'm not clear on what you're saying here.

Programs like Camtasia record live video of your Desktop. Just think along the lines of the standard Print Screen option you have on your keyboard. When you hit the PrtScn button, it snaps an image of your Desktop. With Camtasia, it's the same thing, but instead of one image, it's all video.

I actually was considering going with the GoPro option prior to looking into Google Glass. The one drawback I found with GoPro is that even though it's small, it's still bulky for what I want to do. Also, mounting it on a helmet or whatever makes me think that there is going to be way more camera movement (shaky cam for you folks out there that love that sh*t). With Google Glass, it's going to record where my eyes are fixated on. If GoPro is mounted on my head or on shoulders, the angle is going to be a bit off and the shake is going to be more pronounced.

Camtasia... I'm familiar with that. I get it now. duh.

Yea, the shaky cam would be a real distraction, no matter GoPro or Google Glass.

Really? OHMYGAWD, are you that stupid. I'm really trying to understand the anger. Do they live under a rock. How can they be in the crowd of wanting the latest tech and not understand the principle and process of upgrades?

First I'm laughing... seriously... your anger just makes me laugh. Then I cry, because I'm associated (human species) with dumbass's. Then I laugh again.

Google's 2GB RAM upgrade for new Glass explorers angers early adopters

Quote
Google will soon ship an upgraded version of Google Glass with 2GB of RAM, angering early members of its Glass Explorer Program stuck with the older model.

Google Glass currently comes with 1GB of RAM, but to improve performance Google will begin shipping a new version with 2GB of RAM, it said in a post to Google Plus.

The announcement angered some existing Glass owners. Some demanded a free upgrade to the 2GB version in comments on the posting. Others said they would be willing to pay a small fee for an upgrade, while one acknowledged that if further hardware updates were planned, it wouldn’t make sense for Google to upgrade all users each time. “Getting a final consumer version would be swell though,” he added.

Google does not plan to upgrade existing users’ devices, it said.

“Throughout our open beta program, you can expect to see us make changes here and there. We won’t be swapping devices, but you’ll continue to see improvements with our software updates,” a Google representative said in a comment on the posting.

The company does replace broken or defective Google Glass devices, however, prompting Google Plus user Jake Weisz to identify a loophole in the no-upgrades policy. “If defective Glass units get free upgrades to 2GB, you will see a lot of ‘defective’ models this month,” he wrote.

In May, Google broadened its Explorer Program, making Glass available in the U.S. to anyone over 18 years old for US$1,500. Before that, users who wanted to buy Glass required an invitation from Google. On Monday it extended the offer to U.K. residents over 18, who can purchase Glass for £1,000 (roughly US$1,700).

Google is upgrading the Glass software as well as the hardware. It is adding an easier way to frame shots for photos, with the addition of L-shaped corners bracketing the image in the viewfinder screen, and adding two new Google Now cards, one to remind users where they parked their car and another to let them know when packages are arriving.

The company also announced 12 new Glassware apps from partners, including Shazam, a music recognition app that can be triggered with the words “OK Glass, recognize this song,” and 94Fifty Basketball, a training aid that works with a sensor-equipped basketball to offer feedback after each shot.

Google’s announcements arrived just before the start of its annual I/O developers conference in San Francisco, which kicks off Wednesday. The company will lead sessions on how to build new types of software for Glass during the conference.

Google is also expected to unveil a small TV set-top box resembling the Apple TV and Amazon’s Fire TV at the event, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. Citing two people who have seen the device, the newspaper said the device will not be sold under the Google brand but will be powered by the Android TV software that Google developed to play games, movies and other content on TVs. Users will be able to control the box with their Android phones and tablets and maybe with other devices, the report said.

This folks comments sums it pretty well

Heh. Hee hee. BWAH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! There are still children out there who think they are ENTITLED to get upgrades because they were dim enough to be early adopters? I don't drive around a Model T, by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm also not stupid enough to pay someone else to be a beta tester. Sorry, losers, but expecting a free upgrade when you're an early adopter is as pathetic as expecting Coca-cola to pay you money because you bought a shirt that is just an advertisement for their product.

Anyone who rushes out and buys the first version of anything, and then complains about being antiquated when the next gen comes out is an idiot.

If you're an early adaptor, you already look like a dork.  With this announcement, you get to feel like one too.... :-)

Kind of ties into my reluctance to jump in and get me a Surface Pro 3 so soon after launching. There is always the inevitable factory refresh that works out the kinks and adds more power. Having done a little bit more research into Glass when I originally started this thread, I'm glad I never got into it as anyone that wears them looks like a complete douche. Even if I was alone in the house with them on, I'd feel like one.

Two Years Later, Consumers Don't Actually Want Google Glass

Quote
It was supposed to usher in the sci-fi future of wearables, but that was, well, so 2012. Now a number of Google Glass developers report that they've ceased working on apps for the futuristic face computer -- there's just not enough consumer interest in a blatant display of technology.

The $1,500 headset presents the wearer with a small computer display to the upper-right of his or her field of vision, making  the wearers especially conspicuous in the process. "Wearing a piece of technology on your face was an obstacle," Adriana Vecchioli, who created the Find.It app for Glass, told the Wall Street Journal. Future versions of Glass will need to "be more discreet," she said.

A random sampling of 16 Glass developers by Reuters found that nine of them had ceased working on apps for the device. "If there was 200 million Google Glasses sold, it would be a different perspective. There’s no market at this point," Tom Frencel, CEO of Little Guy Games, said. Frencel's company stopped developing a game for Glass this year to investigate creating for other platforms, like the Oculus Rift virtual-reality headset.

Perhaps most troubling is the recently Glass-less face of Google co-founder Sergey Brin. He has made it a point to show up at star-studded events while wearing his company's headset for the past two years but showed up without them at one such event on Sunday. Brin maintains Google has hardly given up on the product, he just happened to leave his in the car after wearing them everywhere for the past two years.

The sticker price doesn't help, but I think the real reason why there are so few adopters is that it's extremely invasive of other people's space and privacy, which of course has led to assault's when they refused to remove their glasses when they are in a place that they are not wanted. Even if they tell people they are not recording, it's still invasive. No one is gonna trust some stranger to not record.

The thing is: there's no point to the Google Glass.  Barely anyone needs a HUD, do you?  If you needed one for military or surgical purposes, you'd need something more specialized than the general purpose glasses.  There's not a big enough market for it.  Technology needs to fill a need, and if it doesn't... we forget about it.

Newly released emails show Apple knew Google Glass was going to flop

Quote
“It’s been a couple of years since Google first started showing off Google Glass to the world, and in that time we have never heard any rumor that Apple was working on a device to compete with the digital headset,” Brad Reed reports for BGR. “And now a new report from Business Insider may explain why: One of Apple’s most important executives seemingly thought it would be a bomb from the start.”

“Business Insider has obtained some emails that were sent by Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller to tech blogger Abdel Ibrahim of The Tech Block after reading one of his posts making fun of Google Glass,” Reed reports. “‘I can’t believe they think anyone (normal) will ever wear these things,’ Schiller wrote. ‘It reminds me of the push to market video goggles a few years back.'”

So, did anyone here actually buy a pair? Did anyone actually even try one on at an Apple Store? Okay, let's ask another question: Does anyone here even know of someone else that has a pair? I don't. That there should tell you how bad the product is with the general population. I would have thought I would have ran into a stranger on the street by now that had one. Nope.

Great points in this revelation...

Google: Here's what we did wrong with Google Glass

Quote
AUSTIN, Texas — As everybody knows, Google made some mistakes with Google Glass. Now the man who led the project has come out and said exactly where he believes the company went wrong.

"We made one really great decision, and one not so great," explained Astro Teller, the head of Google X division where Glass was conceived and managed, to a packed ballroom at SXSW Interactive. "The great decision was to do the Explorer program.

"The thing that we did not do well is that we allowed, and sometimes even encouraged, too much attention to the program."

Teller is referring to early Glass stunts such as partnering with Diane von Furstenberg to have runway models wear the connected headset during New York fashion week and encouraging all kinds of influencers to become "ambassadors" as Google Glass Explorers.

One thing Teller doesn't regret in the slightest is the public nature of the Google Glass Explorers program.

One thing Teller doesn't regret in the slightest is the public nature of the Google Glass Explorers program. His keynote at SXSW was all about the value of failure — especially public failure — as it gives data and answers to key questions that you simply can't get in any other way.

"[Glass] was one of those things that we had to get out into the world as soon as possible," he said. "We learned a lot of things about the tech, like the battery. It was also valuable for social testing, and I'm really grateful for all of the fearless pioneers who went on that adventure with us."

The thrust of Teller's keynote was that the secret to building the ambitious projects at Google X — which include self-driving cars, Project Loon's Internet balloons and connected contact lenses — is not to craft them in a secret lab somewhere, but to take them out into the world and watch them either succeed or fail.

"Google X has been good at going out into the world with its projects as early as it can," he said. "if you want to make a ton of progress, you have to make a ton of mistakes."

Teller described some of the failures and successes that various Google X projects have had by taking them out in the the real world, including how a self-driving car was able to react to an unpredictable situation — a woman shooing a duck out of the street — and how the balloons of Project Loon, which continually sprouted leaks in early stages of the program

"If you're not failing at least some of the time, you could be learning faster," Teller said. "It's not about going out and not having these bumps and scrapes, it's about getting full value from them."
