Hooking Up Xbox, DVD Player, Receiver To TV
« on: November 03, 2011, 06:14:28 pm »
Ok, I just got finished moving into a new place and now I'm trying to remember how to hook up my TV and Receiver and all that. But I am completely lost and can't remember the set up that worked for me prior to moving.

Here's what I'm working with:

Sony TV
DVD/VCR Combo Player
Xbox 360
A/V Receiver

What I need my set up to do is run everything into my Receiver (so that I can also use the Headphones late at night) to listen to everything (DVD/VCR, TV and Xbox)

I have few RCA Cables to use. I just don't know where what goes. Any help greatly appreciated. I definitely need a detailed. step by step guide to get this working for me. Dumb it down as much as possible for my benefit.

Thanks in advanced.

Well I guess the first question I would ask is what kind and how many inputs does the tv and reciever have? I have only 3 components, my tivo, 360 and PS3 (for blu ray only), and they all run hdmi into my reciever. The tivo goes hdmi into the AVR for when I want to watch tv stuff in 5.1 other wise I have it running component straight into the back of the tv.

Again it all depends on the hardware you have.

Sony TV (It's about 5-6 years old so it doesn't have a lot of the bells and whistles associated with newer models)

Specs:

Video In
Ch. 1
S-Video
RCA (Yellow, Red, White)

Ch. 2
RCA (Yellow, Red, White)

Ch. 4
Green, Blue, Red, White

Ch. 5
Green, Blue, Red, White

*I have no idea why there is no Ch. 3 on the back of TV*

Out
Audio Red, White

Also on back of TV is:

Aux
To Converter
VHF/UHF

Toshiba DVD/VCR Combo

Specs:

DVD Output

Component
Green, Blue, Red

Digital Audio (Coaxial)
Orange, White, Red

DVD/VCR

Out
Yellow, Red, White

In
Yellow, Red, White

Also, there are two jacks similar to that of Aux, Converter and VHF/UHF, but they are not labeled at all.

Sherwood Receiver

Phone
Left/Right (White, Red)

CD
Left/Right (White, Red)

Tape
In - Left/Right (White, Red)
Out - Left/Right (White, Red)

Aux
In - Left/Right (White, Red)
Out - Left/Right (White, Red)

Speakers
Right A & B
Left A & B

I'm not working with S-Video since my pick-me-up DVD/VCR Player doesn't have that option. So I am currently working with a few RCA Cables

Xbox 360

Cable Specs:

Yellow, Red, White - Green, Blue, Red (This is a split Cable, as anyone that has an Xbox already knows)

I also have access to an RF Modulator from a while back that I used on an even older TV which runs RCA Cables if this can work here. Not concerned with maxing out video and audio quality right now.

RF Modulator

Specs:

Ant IN

To TV

Audio IN

Video IN (1K - 75 OHMS)

Does the reciver have digital in and out capabilities? The little squarish looking port?

What cables do you have for the 360?

What cables do you have for the dvd player?

Is there a speaker selection button on the front of the receiver?

It doesn't have that capability. My last receiver was also a Sony and had all the bells and whistles. But it crapped out and I needed a new receiver in a pinch and went with a "bare bones" set up till I had time to review other top shelf receivers. So, no squarish ports.

Toshiba DVD/VCR player

Sherwood A/V Receiver

Xbox Component HD/RCA Cable

Xbox HDMI Audio Cable and HDMI AV Cable

Sorry for the blurry pics.

I'm also working with a bunch of other cables.

RCA (Yellow, Red, White)
Audio (Red, White)
Yellow, Blue, Red <-----Not sure what this one is. Is the Blue the new "White"?
Yellow and White <-----Not sure what this one is either. All I know is the Yellow is for Video and the White is for Audio. No idea why there isn't a red attached.

Ummm I have to be honest here, with the cables you have and the lack of inputs on that reciever, I wouldn't even begin to guess how you had anything hooked up. Unless your tv has alot of inputs and a couple outputs I wouldn't have a clue on where to start.

I'm usually the one that does there stuff. LOL

Seriously with no video ins and outs on that receiver I wouldn't know what to do either unless you had some sort of a/v switch box.

Video In and Out in a receiver?

I'm just scratching my head how I got it to work before. I wish I had taken a picture of the entire hookup before taking it apart for the move.

:::sigh:::

Well on the red/white/yellow cords the yellow is usually designated as video. Sorry I just took a look at my hook up with the magic of flash, I only need to have the camera pointed in the general direction of what I want to shoot, photography and I do have a up convert dvd player hooked up too. I only forgot about it because it hasn't been turned on in over a year and a half. Its a mess of wiring is what it is.

Yes video in and out on a receiver. Mine has a digital audio  The 3 HDMI ins are my 360, PS3, and Tivo. The reciever of course decodes the audio and send the video on through to the tv. Now on some older receivers, newer than yours, there was Svideo and component outs for similar set ups like my hdmi wiring. I ran out of HDMI ports on my reviver so I went hdmi from the UC dvd player into the tv and have a digital coax going back to the receiver. Its pretty horrible.  But I digress.

Taking another look at your receiver its stereo only so video ins and outs never happened. That would lead me to believe you had the 360 and dvd player going straight into the back of the tv and then used the 1 audio OUT on the tv to the back of the receiver.

So its would, if I'm right go like this. I am assuming you don't use the vcr part of the dvd/vhs combo machine -

dvd player -  go from the dvd/vhs OUT port to the back of the tv (channel 2) with the red/white/yellow cords. Now you'r going to run a red and white cord from the audio OUT on the tv to the receiver so you can have sound, again unless you want sount though your tv.

dvd player option 2 - Run b/r/g AND a red/white to the back of the tv and then a different r/w out to the receiver.

360 - Run the R/G/B wire to 4 or 5 that'll take care of the video. However you are going to run the red/white wires that split off from the 360 cord and go straight into your receiver, unless you want sound through your tv.

Glad I took those pictures and typed that other stuff out, it got my brain in gear.

Well, the video shows up on the TV, but there is no sound for either the DVD/VCR or Xbox coming out of the receiver. As far as the Xbox cable, it doesn't have the Red, White only connections. The other half of the Yellow, Red, White is the Green, Blue, Red connectors.

Make sure you check that your speaker hook up on the back, both the left and right are either both on a or b just to make it easier. Then make sure the speaker select button on the front is pushed in for the A if they are both on A or B. Make sure that thats the only speaker select button is pushed in.

Okay. Will need to re-hook again. Also, I just noticed that the front of my DVD player comes with Video Audio In ports. But I never used the front for connections before.

I tired it the original way and tripled checked the A & B Speakers. No dice. So, in a shot in the dark gamble, I decided to just run the XBox RCA Cables into the front ports of the DVD player. That worked as far as sending video to the TV. Only problem is that I have to switch the channel on the DVD player to Line 2 for Xbox to show up on screen and then back to Line 1 for DVD player to show up. That's not a problem because I'll never have use for both at the same time.

As for audio. I've always ran into into the Aux ports on the back of the Receiver, but here it wasn't working at all. So another shot in the dark was running it into the Phono ports, which works for me. So, this will do for the time being till I can upgrade my system again to higher quality components.

One question though, is there any way to lower the volume of the TV basically down to 0, while not affecting the volume of the receiver? On my older TV (prior to going with current Sony) I was able to do just that. But on the Sony, it's not independent of one another. I turn down TV, so goes the receiver. This isn't a deal breaker for me since I have everything else working now. Just curious if there is a way to revisit this particular set up from before.

NOTE TO SELF: Take picture of current cable hook ups so as not have to deal with this again.
