Transfer VHS Tapes To Your Computer

I'm definitely going to look into this product. I have a ton of stuff that I'd like to archive before total VHS annihilation sets in.

Cool. I have several I really need to capture.

Now to get the VHS player and that other hardware and software.

Where do I find a player?

eBay. Or you could always get a new VCR/DVD player combo for your spare room or something. They are around 50 bucks which isn't too bad.

Elgato Video Capture Device. This device goes for around 75 bucks, on sale. I'm going to check and see if its cheaper elsewhere as well as what other competing brands are out there that do the same thing. So far, this is the only one I have been able to find.

I also need to find a 8mm Video Camera as I have stacks of those that need to be saved to Hard Drive. They don't make 8mm anymore, for obvious reasons. My Camera stopped working like 20 years ago. I'm kind of leery about buying an 8mm from eBay since they have a history of falling apart and since they are obsolete, people have been jacking the prices up way to high to make a serious offer for one.

*Sigh*

I have an EyeTV but the quality has never really won me over.  I prefer to copy over the VHS to DVD and then, if need be, use Handbrake to rip the video to the computer.  The quality is far better (and more controllable) than EyeTV.  You still have to deal with the wait time (it's 1:1 after all, recording while playing).

EyeTV is made by ElGato, I have two versions and they're okay... certainly easy enough, plug in here, plug in there... the picture just always felt soft to me, maybe because it was  displayed in a small window on a sharp laptop screen instead of filling a CRT).

So, last night someone put up an Canon 8mm Video Camera for 20 bucks with !4 for shipping. Given how long I have been looking for one that actually works, this is damn cheap. Most go for around 60 bucks or more plus shipping. So, if the statement "it plays and records great with all the accessories in working condition" holds up, this could definitely prove to be a great deal. I really hope it's all that and more. Can't wait to start transferring my tapes to PC. I want to see what's on those tapes. But before putting in those valuable tapes, I will of course test the camera with a dummy tape first to make sure the tape doesn't get chewed up.

So, my 8mm Video camera arrived a couple of days ago. Spent all last night trying to get it to work yesterday. No , power, no nothing. Battery couldn't hold a charge and plugging the charger into Camera didn't work. Figured I just got duped by a seller on eBay. Rather than losing my cool, I just kept messing around this morning with different cables (mine, not his), trying different Batteries (mine, not his) and finally get the camera up and running. Since I don't have a specific cable that's needed to transfer to my Computer, I decided that I might as well transfer the first tape to VHS just in case the camera craps out. So, I just got finished with the first tape and it was surreal. It was from 1998. Cross country road trip that took me to Denver and back, stopping along the way at Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Carlsbad Caverns, Las Vegas and a handful of other spots along the way. But the crown jewel for me was at the beginning and end of the tape showing my Grandpa and Grandma. I got choked up. The scene at the end was totally surprising because I didn't remember it at all and it was video of me and my Grandma carving out a pumpkin together for Halloween. The cost of the camera and the roadblock of getting it to work was worth the price just to see that.

Gonna take a break for a bit before busting out the next 8mm tape to transfer. Sitting through an entire tape is exhausting because there is a lot of shaky cam footage that was making me dizzy. Can't wait to see what's in store next on tape #2.
