I will be reviewing Season 1 as if I have never seen an episode, even though this will probably be my 5th or 6th time with this season. I can never get enough of Lost.

I can easily say that the Pilot for Lost is the single greatest opening to any series that's come before or will ever come after. There isn't a better opening salvo in which the main characters as well as the secondary characters are presented in a perfect way....or so we thought. What makes this episode so kick ass is that we are left to take each character at face value in how they are presented to us while on the Island. But then this isn't a typical show. What would become the hallmark of the series were the flashbacks and they were perfectly executed here to tell us what each character is really like, after we have more or less already made up our minds about them.

This was best exemplified with Kate, who we see as the all-American-Girl that we are suppose to root for, only to get a very eye opening flashback that tells us otherwise with her being in cuffs and in the company of the Plane's Air Marshall. Also, we are introduced to a couple of "what the  f u c k " moments that tell us this isn't just any Island. With the Smoke Monster (which hasn't revealed itself physically...yet) and the Polar Bear, we are off and running with Lost.

Tabula Rasa is a fantastic episode that carry's over from the Pilot episode. In this one as the Air Marshall lay dying, we get to see what his past is, or more specifically what his connection is to Kate as we see a little bit more about her through flashbacks and how she was on the run and he was the one pursuing her. This is Lost after all, so we aren't going to get a lot of information about her right out of the gate, but they give us just enough to literally hook us into wanting to tune in to see more of the puzzle. I'm glad they did it this way because it gave the viewer time to try and rationalize whatever she did and who she was compared to who she is on the Island.

One interesting thing is that Jack is sitting on the beach with Kate and she wanted to tell him what she did, but he literally told her that everyone on the plane "died 3 days ago". Now, did the writers really know all along that they were dead when they started writing this or was that just a major coincidence that fit in what what became of the series? Who knows.........Oh wait, I'm suppose to be reviewing this like I've never seen Lost or any of the episodes. So, diregard what I just wrote. Another great episode that finally clues us into more of who and what John Locke is all about. Up till now he has been more of a 'secondary' character who has befriend Walter and found his dog. But with the flashbacks we see that he isn't what we have come to expect given the fact that the biggest reveal is that the wheelchair on the beach belongs to him. Yup, prior to crashing on the Island he had been confined to the chair for 4 years. The writing is brilliant thus far as I mention earlier. They give us enough to alter our perception of the character, but hold back enough to want to know more and in John's case we are left asking.....how did he first end up in the chair and second, how the hell is it that he can suddenly walk?

Awesome episode.

This one has Jack chasing his own White Rabbit, which is a metaphor for his father. We learn a little be more about Jack through flashbacks and how he was on the outs with his father, but still had the duty to go and find him and bring him back home to his mom. It would be something else though as his rescue mission suddenly turns into transporting his body back for a funeral when the plane crashes on the Island. For those few that have never seen an episode of Lost, the man that keeps popping up in the trees and ocean is Jack's father.

Also, we get the "live together or die alone" speech here as Jack, after having comes to terms with his and his father's situation decides to take on the responsiblity of being the Tribe leader and sets about organizing everyone to contribute and live as a unit rather than 'every man for himself'.  Just an all around fantastic episode. Watching Lost again reminds me how much I love this series.

With a title like that, it's obvious that the episode will focus primarily on Jin and Sun and how they met and what secret that Sun holds. It's a doozy for sure because the biggest reveal thus far is that she can speak English and was intent on leaving Jin at the airport. Had she only just done that she wouldn't be on the Island. I thought they way they slowly give us pieces of their relationship to suddenly having her ask Michael for help, to explain the meaning behind the watch was perfect.

As for the camp now divided with half moving to the caves and half choosing to remain on the beach so as not to miss a passing plane or boat, I'm pretty sure that I would have stayed on the beach. Just build a shelter just off the beach and having a rotating 2 man team to do look-out watch and have another 2 man team go and fetch water. That's what I would do.

This episode shines a light on Charlie, Drive Shaft and how he became addicted to drugs. This is also the episode that sees Jack trapped in a cave-in as well as the mysterious person to knock Sayid on the head as he was about to triangulate the source of the distress signal. Although this was a good episode, it felt a little underwhelming compared to all the episodes thus far. Maybe the lack of John Locke had something to do with it. I dunno.

This is a great episode that finally gives us the flashback scenes involving Sawyer and what his dealio is. Up till now he has been painted as the Island villain, but with the flashbacks we see that there is more than meets the eye and his story is pretty fascinating. The letter that he has been reading to himself since crashing on the Island had me guessing at what it could be about. So when Kate read it, we are led to believe that HE conned a family which led to a disastrous ending and that the kid was coming after him. It's only later that the true nature of the letter is revealed and that the kid in question is Sawyer himself.

I thought they did a good job with Shannon's asthma problem by giving Sun something constructive to do that was more than just standing around and taking verbal abuse from Jin. Now she is empowered and carving out an identity for herself....away from Jin. As for Sayid, he's got a lot to think about after torturing Sawyer. Lets see what he finds out in the jungle now that he has left the beach to map out the Island.

With Sayid off searching for whatever on the Island, we come to our first object that doesn't belong because thus far it's only been the Survivors and the jungle. So when Sayid finds the big fat cable on the beach that is coming out of the ocean and leading into the Jungle, we begin to see that the Island isn't what it originally appeared to be. We are introduced to a new character Danielle Rousseau, who has been on the Island for the last 16 years and is the voice heard on the transmission. The bulk of this episode is about Sayid in both present day and in flashbacks as we finally get more information not only about him but also the lady in the picture he is always looking at: Nadia.  We also first learn about Alex, Danielle's Daughter, who will factor into the mythology of Lost later in the series.Very good episode. All in all a very good episode.

Here it is. This is the one where Lost introduces someone that clearly has an hidden agenda and isn't what they claim to be. When they introduce Ethan Rom into the camp, it's so obvious that he is the one that attacked Claire in the middle of the night. It's kinda hard not to be able to look past the fact that he was never seen an any of the previous episodes and then all of the sudden he is just.....there. Also, this is the Claire flashback episode which traces her getting pregnant and then dealing with the psychic who is trying to convince her not to give up the baby. I do think it was very interesting that the only way he could make this happen was to foresee the plan crash and to make sure she was on it....thus ensuring she would have to keep the baby.

Ethan is one scary and intimidating-looking dude and someone I wouldn't want to run into in the middle of the jungle.

There is a lot of running around on the Island as the search party looks for Claire, Charlie and Ethan. Nothing much happens in this department till the very end when Jack and Kate find Charlie, hanging from a Tree and revive him. Most of this episode is really about Jack and his relationship to his father as we get a lot of flashbacks to flesh his story out more. Still a great episode in spite of the lack of forward movement with the story on the Island. Charlie does reveal that there are others and Locke and Boone discover what will eventually be the Hatch in the ground.

This one is all about Kate. Kinda. The flashbacks center on her. But it's more about the mystery of what is inside the case that she and Sawyer find in the lagoon near the waterfall. And even after all the dancing around and the contents of the case are revealed, we still are left to wonder what the significance of the Toy Plane is. Also, Sayid seeks the help of Shannon to help him translate the french codes on the map he took from Danielle. This was the start of a veeeeeeeeery short relationship between the two. I won't say anymore until a certain episode is played out.

This episode seemed to have everyone involved in their own little story to tell, even though this one is focused primarily on Shannon and Boone in flashback as well as on the Island. We learn that Shannon and Boone are not blood relatives but half-sister and half brother and the make-out scene was quite disturbing. Bleh.

The rest of the episode dealt with Hurley hunting for food, stepping on a sea urchin and being taken care of my Jin. Also, Kate discovers that Sun can speak English and Locke is one crazy dude after he drugs Boone to teach him a "lesson" that involves the Smoke Monster killing Shannon. A lot was going on and yet the episode seemed really short. Bah!

Special is all about Walter and Michael both on the Island and in flashbacks. We see that the two were separated for much of Walter's life as in was in Australia, living with his mom and adoptive father. It was only when she passed away did Michael enter into his life and the request of the adoptive father who didn't want the responsibility of raising him. The most interesting thing about the flashbacks is that they hint at the fact that there is something different...almost sinister about Walter. That he is bad luck as bad things....happen.

The biggest thing that happens in this episode, besides Walter being attacked by a polar bear was the reemergence of Claire who shows up out of the jungle, unkempt, battered and....Lost. Also, this is the first time I've ever noticed that 3 of the episodes open with a closeup of an eye: This episode, the previous episode and of course the Pilot episode that opened with a closeuo of Jack's eye. I know the series ends on a closeup of Jack's eye as well.

This has never been a favorite episode of mine and it's all because of the flashback story involving Charlie. It's boring and I didn't care that he was trying to make a better person out of himself by first conning a chick, getting a job working for her father and then selling copiers. The only thing going for this episode was the capture and execution of Ethan. Had the entire episode been just about this, it would easily get a perfect rating. Unfortunately any tension that presents itself with this part of the story-line gets derailed by the flashbacks. I get why they had to do the flashbacks because in the end it's about Charlie protecting Claire, even if that means pulling the trigger to do so. It's just ruins an otherwise good episode and arc.

A very eye-opening episode that looks deeper into the past of Sawyer as we see him first as a child having to go through the ordeal of what happened to his parents and then later killing the real "Sawyer" only to realize that he was setup by someone else, thus killing an innocent man. This also marked the first time that characters that we know from the Island had their paths crossing each other back in Australia. In this case it was Sawyer drinking shots with Jack's father, who tells him about his son. The 'crossing paths'  idea was first hinted at in a previous episode while Boone was giving his statement to the police when Sawyer was brought into the station by the police. But this was the first time actual connection to other characters were played out. Very solid and entertaining episode.

In Translation could also be called 'Daddy Issues' because that's basically what this one is all about. Jin is ashamed of his own fathers lot in life and chooses to tell Sun and everyone else that he has passed on. Jin is also trying to shield the truth from Sun with regards to her own father and what a bad man he is. Also, Walter is having daddy issues himself, so much so that he rather burn down the boat he is working on instead of just talking to him about his problem of "moving" off the Island. This is a pivotal episode because Sun finally has to confess that she can speak English to save her husband from a beating by everyone else who assume he is the one that torched the boat. Another great episode.

Also wanted to point out that this is another episode that opens up with a Close Up of an eye which further drives home the fact that the writers from the get go knew what story they were telling at how it would all end. Think about it...each character on the Island is telling their story as if their lives are flashing before their eyes.

Finally we get around to Hurley's back story and what a story it is. It's a monumental one at that because it's basically ground zero for the series' mythology and the numbers. THE numbers. We learn that Hurley played 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42 in a lottery and won, thus becoming a millionaire. But it came at a price as it unleashed a Pandora's box of bad luck. Everyone that has come in contract with the numbers has suffered their share of bad luck one way or another. The numbers are pretty revealing in themselves as we find out that Sayid had possession of them, notes that he had taken from Danielle, which sets Hurley out on a quest to find and question her about the numbers.

Later it's revealed that she herself was brought to the Island based on a transmission of the same numbers and confirmed for Hurley they are in fact bad luck. Such a great episode that really opened up what the Island would eventually become.

Big episode for a couple of reasons. Flashback for John Locke reveals his parents are  f u c k e d  up. His birth mother was in mental hospital and his birth father cons John out of his kidney and then bails on him. What's worst is that he put his mother up to it to get the long con started. Ouch. I'd go ballistic and do some serious damage for sure. Also, John convinces Boone to climp to the Beechcraft that's stuck in the trees only to have it tip over and crash down below. We all know how this ends.

John Locke is bad news for sure. Stay away.

What a sad episode. Think about it. Boone puts his trust in someone (John Locke) and pays for it with his life. On top of that, he is more or less 'alone' on an Island and he is even deprived of being able to say goodbye to Shannon. Even though this episode was about Jack and his wedding flashback, it was really about one life ending and another beginning with Claire giving birth. A very intense episode all around.

Good episode that focuses on Sayid...past and present. In the flashbacks he is trying to uncover the location of C4 by betraying a friend who is a suspected Terrorist. He only agrees to help the CIA because they will give him the whereabouts of Nadia, his long lost love. In present day, Sayid interrogates Locke about the Beechcraft, which he gives up freely, but continues to lie about the Hatch. This was right around the time I started to hate the character of John Locke when Lost first aired. He was fascinating to watch yes, but I hated his lying, sneaky ways about him.

Great episode for a couple of reasons. First off, we finally get to see the origin of Kate's Toy Plane and why it means so much to her. But not everything about her past is revealed or why she is on the run from Johnny Law...yet. Also, this episode prepares the viewer for the impending launch of the boat as someone tries to poison Michael. Was it Kate so that she could get access to the boat? Was it Sawyer getting back at Michael for being kicked off the boat? I'm not gonna tell ya. You'll just have to watch the episode yourself to find out.

The Season Finale to the epic first season comes to a close with a lot of  s h i t  going down. Michael, Jin, Sawyer and Walter set sail for the open seas hoping to be rescued. Jack, Locke, Hurley and Kate watch "Arntz" get blown up while retrieving dynamite. Sayid and Charlie are chasing down Danielle who has kidnapped Claire's baby, Aaron. So much stuff....so little time. Every time I watch this episode, it never fails to deliver an exciting 2 hours. We finally get to "see" more of the Smoke Monster as well and Locke's infatuation with it.

Also, everyone here gets a flashback sequence of their own, culminating with ground zero, showing everyone boarding the plane that would change their "lives" forever. Really cool to see again and again.

The Season Finale also started a trend of leaving the viewers with frustrating Cliffhangers and it all starts here....at the end that is. First we get a corker when the boat that the gang is on is attacked by unknown "pirates" that kidnap Walter and then leave them for the boat to explode. That was the good. The bad is that Jack and Locke are able to finally get the Hatch open to reveal a ladder that just keeps going down and down and down.....

Still, it did a great job of entertaining me and everyone else. It worked because we all came back for more in Season 2.

If you have never seen Lost, you absolutely owe it to yourself to Buy Season 1 on DVD. It's worth every penny. Forget all the naysayers that rant about how the series loses itself in future seasons. I'm talking about Season 1 and it's a whopper that changed the face of television. This is how you do episodic series and it doesn't get any better than this. Definite Buy.

Lost

My wife wanted to know what we could binge watch. We’ve tried Dexter, Orange is the New Black, Game of Thrones and Mad Men… with little success. Meaning, not really grabbing us. I’ve been suggesting Lost for quite some time, but my wife, like a lot of folks, just don’t want to give older shows a chance. Why? Dunno.

So she gave in this weekend, and wouldn’t you know, she’s hooked. Of course, the first episode will catch anybody’s attention.

I watched Lost when it originally aired and loved it. But I am in the same group of people that crapped on later seasons. I gave season 2 a chance, but quit about 2/3 into it and have not seen the rest. We shall see if things go better this time around.

So I remember some of the first season and those ‘surprises’ have lost a lot of its sheen. But I’m also remembering, Lost is a lot of hand held shaky cam. That is rubbing  me the wrong way. I’m hoping like hell that doesn’t continue through all 6 seasons.

I do notice something good by the binge watching vs. the old standard of 1 hour a week schedule. I love the instant access to the following episodes… especially the linear shows such as Lost. I truly love the commercial free viewings.

We’ll have to see if Lost can keep me through all 6 seasons, 121 episodes. That’s a lot of freakin time… and it’s summer. Told my wife, it’s pretty hard to sit down inside while it’s so nice outside.

I'm in the minority of absolutely loving the entire run of Lost. Sure, it's not perfect, but each season offers a lot of fantastic moments. Wait till you get.....

Sh*t, gotta keep it to myself and not spoil it. Looking forward to hearing how you and your wife progress with the series.

With that said, how can you not like Dexter or Game of Thrones? What the f*ck!

I think I would like Game of Thrones. My wife not so much. But like I said, it's summer and I find it so difficult to sit down to watch much TV when it's daylight and nice out. Lost is going to be a challenge.

Winter... No problem. I might be able take Thones back up this fall.

Dexter, I get why it was good. It's just didn't quite hook me.

Mad Men... I don't understand. The production values are outstanding. But as far as story goes, none of that interested me in the least.

I implore you to give Dexter another chance when it's winter. You are depriving yourself of one of the greatest Seasons of any show for any series ever. Speaking of Season 5 that is. And no, you can't jump to Season 4. You have to earn it for the payoff to register. Okay, back to Lost....keep us up to date on how you both are progressing through it.

Currently we are at episode 8.... 4 first night... 4 the next. Not sure I can keep that pace up. The shows are only 42-45 minutes long though.

I believe season one had 25 episodes. Why that strikes me as massive is a sad testament to what we expect today with less than a handful or two of episodes in a season.

Did any of the stars of the show go on to do other good stuff. I don't recall seeing any of them anywhere.

Then again, there's a huge swatch of TV I don't give light of day, let alone news about.

I was just thinking about this the other day in regard to The Shield (which I'm currently watching) and it struck me how shows now are just not willing to invest that kind of money any more. I can accept fewer episode for shows now if it means the quality is much better. I rather have that instead of 22 episodes of mediocre content. Even 24, a show that basically needs 24 episodes to tell its story is now reduced to just 12 episodes. It remains to be seen how this season pans out.

The one that has had the biggest success is definitely Michael Emerson in Person of Interest. He is f*cking awesome in the series. Daniel Dae Kim has had a nice run on Hawaii Five-O, which has seen a few guest stars with recurring roles on it such as Jorge Garcia (Hurley), and Terry O'Quinn (John Locke). But Emerson is definitely on the upswing of former cast-mates of Lost. Ken Leung (Miles) has appeared on Person of Interest a couple of times and Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet) did her best to save Revolution.

That's good to hear.  Those folks did some fine acting.

What about Matthew Fox (Jack), Evangeline Lilly (Kate) and Josh Holloway (Sawyer). They all had dominating roles. They didn't just fade away did they?

On the flip side, don't have these huge gaps of time. SAST (short attention span theater). I've heard 6, 12, 18 months of gaps. WTF

Last I heard, Fox got kicked off and arrested for being drunk and unruly on a Plane of all things. Lilly is in The Hobbit and Holloway had a new series on CBS called Intelligence. I saw the first episode, but I didn't think it was strong enough for me to invest in case they cancelled it. CBS has burned me a lot lately. Not going to take the chance. Sure enough, they did cancel the show.

I AM NOT enjoying the extreme shaky cam. WTF... I so forgot about that. Maybe I blocked that out of my mind.

But guess what, I get to watch that for 2 hours a night now.  >:(

Dammit, did they continue that style through all the seasons?

I guess Gene Simmons was right. Marriage sucks.  ;D j/k.

The shaky cam issue was never a problem for me and I hardly noticed it at all. The style remains the same throughout I guess. But since it's something that didn't affect me nor was it noticeable, I can't say for sure. Maybe they dialed it down somewhat are the series progresses? Here's a tip to combat shaky cam though. If you close one eye, tilt your head and stand on one foot, it levels everything out and appears to be stationary. Try it.

Speaking of leveling out... I saw some recent footage of Star Trek series, where the action has the people shaking because of torpedo hits or whatever. Then the camera shakes too to drive home the point.

But the footage is of just the cast doing the shaking.... It's kinda humorous.

something like this...

My wife is slowly figuring out what everybody else figured out when Lost first ran.

They throw a lot of strange stuff out, maybe readdressing it later, maybe not.

Every episode she's asking 'I'm trying to figure out blah, blah, blah'.

This only reminds me of the frustration I had the first time around. You kind of enjoy it, but then it tests my patience.

I found the sudden relationship between Sayid and Shannon odd. It's just starting, but forget where it goes.

Also, I don't get why no one is going to see the French woman, let alone, not even talk about her.

Finally, does Jin know English or not? In one scene we see Jin watching an argument from others about him and all he hears is jibberish. Yet in other scenes Harley and Michael are talking to him and he seems to understand.

No, it's still going. Just less intense each night (4 episodes a night).

We are in the middle of season 2.

I think I quit sometime around these middle episodes. I have in my head, that I watched 1-1/2 seasons. Some things I distinctly remember. Other things seem completely new.
