I finally got around to watching The Fighter which is a movie I've wanted to see for 2 years now and my god, did this movie ever deliver on its promise. It's scary how deep Christian Bale disappears into characters, but what he did here was....EPIC. He is so f u c k i n g good here as Dick "Dicky" Eklund, who is the older brother of Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg), who is no slouch in this role either. The movie may be framed around the world of Boxing, but it's more about toxic relationships and how they can keep in a cycle that you just can't break free from, keeping you from fulfilling your own destiny.
It's just a shame that Micky's toxic relationship is his own family, more specifically his own mother who turns a blinds eye to Dicky's crack addiction, but purposely keeps Micky under her thumb to keep him tied down to her and what she wants. It's only when the "movie" about Dicky's life airs on TV that a dose of reality is shoved down everyone's throats. He was so delusional about the movie that he didn't even know they were doing a documentary on his crack addiction.
I won't say anything more so as not to spoil if for those that have yet to see this. But I will say that the ending, was f u c k i n g exhilarating!! I could feel the blood pumping, the heart beating fast and holding my breath. It delivered for me in a lot of ways. I highly recommend The Fighter without question. If you want to see an Acting Tour-De-Force, this is the one to get. The film was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director for David O. Russell and it won for Best Supporting Actor (Bale) and Best Supporting Actress (Melissa Leo). I think Amy Adams could have easily won for Best Supporting Actress as well. Yup, she was nominated too, going up against Leo. How many movies can you say that about? Not many.
If that's not incentive to check out this out, the soundtrack and music score is AWESOME! It's so f u c k i n g good that I'm heading down to my Record Store down the street to see if they have a copy. Must. Get. It!! And if they have the movie there as well I will pick this up too. Later tonight I will probably watch the original fight on YouTube. Epic!!
