Post by: Mac on July 13, 2012, 03:27:20 pm
I thought we had a thread on movie art? Anyway, a few art pieces have drifted across my desk of late. Just very cool stuff...

The very eye catching and retro one sheet...

Artwork for Marvel’s AVENGERS ASSEMBLED Blu-ray Set Revealed; Great Individual Covers for Each Film by Matthew Ferguson

Quote
Last month, Marvel announced that they’ll be releasing a 10-disc, six-movie Blu-ray collector’s set called Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One – Avengers Assembled.  The ginormous set will include all of Marvel’s films up through The Avengers, as well as loads of special features.  Now Marvel has released some truly gorgeous box art for the set, as Matthew Ferguson has cooked up some fantastic sleeves to go with each corresponding movie.  The sleeves will house each individual movie, while the actual box for the whole set looks like it’ll be in the shape of a briefcase.

Paranorman One Sheet

Quote

A series of five new one-sheets has come our way for the upcoming animated kid-friendly horror comedy Paranorman that are really cool in a vintage kind of way. And guess what? There's not a floating head to be seen anywhere! Rejoice!

ParaNorman is directed by Sam Fell (The Tale of Despereaux, Flushed Away) and Chris Butler (Coraline, The Corpse Bride) from Butler's original screenplay.

I found this very interesting

The Movie Poster Brake Down (http://www.rsvlts.com/2012/08/06/the-movie-poster-brake-down/)

French film distributor Christophe Courtois is no stranger to movie posters. Having dealt with thousands of movies in his day, Courtois noticed a growing trend in the world of movie posters. Each cliche poster has its own genre of film associated with the style of poster. Or so we think. His blog was written in french.

The Cold Shoulder

The Cold Shoulder poster features the mysterious lead with a chip on (you guessed it) their shoulder. The long trenchcoat is also a trending feature of these, dark and ominous characters.

The Explosion

Action. Bullets. Fire. EXPLOSIONS. Bruce Willis: 3. Jason Stathom, 3. Nic Cage: 5. I smell a villian for “The Expendables 3: Someone Stole the Declaration of Indepenance”.

The Lady Turnback

They are powerful, smart and strong women. They don’t need a man to tell them squat, because they’re independent and could solve any problem. Even when they’re busy saving the world, they still have time to look back at you, flex their glutes and say “I am not a piece of meat. This is a respectable pose.”

The Quirky Public Bench

Corky and lovable, but has a problem. No worries, whatever it may be, I’m sure it will all work out in the end, but until it does lets just sit on this bench and think about the world for a while.

The Text Message

A fairly new method of sending a message about a movie via text on said movie star’s face. Matt Damon’s face appears 3 times on this board. I guess he has a very writable face, must’ve been a great canvas for the nights he’d pass out drunk during his Harvard days.

The Tom Cruise Profile

Hollywood loves the side of his Tom’s face. Rumor has it every mirror in Tom’s house has two ajacent mirrors angled at 45 degrees so he can catch a glimpse of his profile at all times. That could quite possibly be true.

The Blindfold

See no evil. We get it. The movie is trying to say there’s a mystery or secret here and gosh darn it someones going to figure it out.

The Sunglasses Reflection

Something about sunglasses that just make everyone seem a little cooler. Well maybe except of #1 and 3. What better way to get a 360 degree visual than to get a full frontal of the movies star and the point of view from their very own eyes? 100% of people wearing glasses in these posters are the protagonist or antagonist and portrayed to the the coolest bro in the movie.

The Eye See You

Nothing more visual than an all seeing eyeball. Especially when there’s an image or graphic that should otherwise not be associated with an eye on, in or around it. Since the eye is one, if not the most sensitive part of your body, nothing turns a head for better or worse than a giant eyeball associated with a foreign object. Not a shocker than most of these flicks are Horror, thriller or suspenseful.

The Back to Back

The two protagonists, usually who have contrasting personalities, back to back in true odd couple fashion. Shows the symbiotic connection between two opposing forces.  Usually a romady, dramady, or comedic-fartady.

The 5 Hole

No mystery here. Guys like a nice pair of legs that go on for days and where better than to smack the title of a movie than between them. Thank you Hollywood

Very cool post. When I use to do commission work designing stuff for other people, I had a ton of references and what you posted is what I have in my folders, labeled accordingly. It's hard to break the cycle when people pay you decent money because they say they want something that "looks like________".

Add Some Wow to Your Walls

I like some of these...

Quote
If you’re the kinda guy who can recite classic movie lines like, “Leave the gun; take the cannoli” on command in between handfuls of popcorn, you may want a pop culture print, painting, or sculpture in your home theater with a little personality, right?

What better conversation starter or way to warm up a cinema space than with an original masterpiece from David O’Keefe Studios (davidokeefe.com).

The passionate pop culture artist—who has a solo gallery in Sarasota, Florida, but is based out of Tampa—nails it with his caricatures of everyone from his laugh-out-loud Animal House tribute, Knowledge Is Good, to his sepia-toned, spot-on, gun-toting Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry, which by the way, is one of O’Keefe’s favorites and on the gallery’s most requested list. “Caddyshack is another staple for us,” he adds.

Quote
O’Keefe is the first to admit that his masterpieces are geared toward men—guys who have man caves or media rooms and want something special for that space. Not surprisingly, there are some core favorites among the movie, sports, and music icons that O’Keefe illustrates. Seinfeld is a huge favorite for TV fans. Sports nuts are eating up the Tim Tebow stuff.

The statement piece for movie aficionados is the original Godfather painting—La Famiglia—which took a full year to complete—outfitted in a custom frame complete with the signature horse head, healthy representation of cherubs with tommy guns, and the church where the baptism took place. In all its dark majesty, it carries an $80,000 price tag (we hear it’s negotiable). But don’t worry; there are plenty of points of entry for those without deep pockets. A small original paper piece goes for as little as $40.

Quote
Interestingly, O’Keefe creates his art—and is so adeptly able to capture the likeness and personas of his pop culture icons—with a technique that has served him well. “I don’t like to work from photos; I like to work from video.” For the Godfather piece, he says, he watched the movie over and over and over to capture the distinctive personalities.

While the Coppola movie is one of the best ever, grants O’Keefe, he was able to name his favorite film without hesitation. “Oh, Goodfellas,” he laughs. “It’s the best comedy ever written.” We’ll be buying that print as soon as it’s ready!

Back To The Camera Posters Are The Trend For 2013

Quote
It would seem that movie-goers don’t want our stars looking us in the eye anymore. We just want it quick, dirty, and, most importantly, from behind.

Earlier today we saw the release of the first poster for the upcoming M. Night Shyamalan-directed sci-fi thriller After Earth, but if you’ve been paying attention to the film world over the last few months you probably realized that the design is very similar to some other recently released posters for 2013 blockbusters. In fact, it almost seems that every movie that is set to debut next year is getting a different version of the same poster.

Don’t believe me? Well, let’s do some quick mental time travel all the way to late September when the folks over at Dreamworks Animation released this poster for The Croods:

Quote

About a month later Marvel Studios unveiled this piece for Iron Man 3:

Quote
Then earlier this month we got the first one-sheet for Paramount Picture’s Star Trek Into Darkness:

Quote
That was followed just four days later by Universal Pictures’ Oblivion:

Quote
And then another four days passed and Warner Bros. Jack The Giant Slayer came out with this:

Quote
Just to cement the point, here’s the poster for Columbia Pictures’ After Earth:

Quote
For those keeping score, that’s six practically identical 2013 movie posters from six different studios that were all released within four months of each other (and four came from December alone). Obviously I’m not naďve enough to think that this is a brand new thing. Not only have movie studios reduced the number of poster templates in general down to about 10, they’ve even been doing the behind-the-back look for a while now – and it was popularized by this pair of pieces from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight:

Quote
Though it’s been happening for years now and the diminishing amount of creativity in Hollywood has been long apparent, it is now becoming a legitimate problem. It’s one thing for studios to release stupid, generic designs a couple times over the course of a year, but when they’re all released at the exact same time there is a danger of homogenization. Serious film fans may not have the problem, but is a casual movie-goer going to look at the posters for Oblivion and After Earth and know the difference? Absolutely not. They’re going to be processed mentally as the exact same thing, and how does that help either film?

What’s funny about the whole situation is that it will end up being the studios that are hurt by flooding the market with material like this. If everything looks the same people will have to decide whether they want to spend money on the same thing twice. And that’s going to hurt at the box office.

Repetitive designs like these come from excessive market research and testing, so it’s very likely that people do actually respond to the “hero’s back to the camera” poster, but marketing folks have to start pumping the brakes. Otherwise they may as well just go with pure grey backgrounds with movie titles on them.

Those Retropolis posters feel sort of perfect for those old flicks, it has that grandeur and deco style we expect that wasn't actually THERE the first time, if that makes sense.  They feel like the idealized versions of our memories instead of the genuine article, which is great, since we build things up in our minds like that.  They're all very cool, I would love some of those on my wall (I'm digging the Gigantor poster, even though I'm not a big T-28 fan).

Horror Icons come alive in fan art

Quote
It's always refreshing to see new artistic impressions of our favorite horror all-stars. Here's a crazy collection from Hellraiser, Friday the 13th, Edward Scissorhands and others, dressed up in wild cartoon-style colors.

DeviantArt wizard thurZ (http://thurz.deviantart.com/) was inspired by the dark pomp and personality of Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Pinhead, Chucky, Edward and Leatherface in depicting their vibrant toon selves. The Brazilian artist gave each eye-popping portrait a serious treatment with a distinct tone and color palette taken from the famous fright films they were hatched from.

Put down the hatchet and enjoy!

Brad Bird Reveals Unreleased Hand-Painted Poster For The Incredibles

Quote
In addition to being a fun, thrilling superhero-led adventure, Pixar's The Incredibles is a beautifully crafted film. Without disguising the fact that its a CGI animated movie, the artwork in the film harkens back to the early days of comics during the pulp era, featuring strong-jawed heroes and beautiful, leggy dames. Just in terms of aesthetics matching themes it's one of the studio's greatest works, and just from a creativity point it's a spectacle, from the design of Syndrome's island lair to the shape and construction featured in the city during the battle against the robot in the third act. And now a lost poster has been unveiled that matches the film's artistry.

Brad Bird, who directed the Oscar winning film back in 2004, took to his Twitter account this afternoon and unveiled a beautiful piece of advertising artwork that was never released. The design was hand-painted by legendary poster artist Robert McGinnis, whose work - Bird points out - you would probably recognize from titles like Breakfast at Tiffany's and various entries in the James Bond franchise. Check it out below and join me in wondering why the hell it was never released before now.

I could put this under the Pacific Rim thread (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/movies/pacific-rim/msg15556/#msg15556), but as it says, this is just concept art and may never reflect what comes to the movie itself

Quote
Concept art can sometimes be a mixed bag. In many cases - particularly when it comes to big sci-fi or action adventures - the pieces can be totally mindblowing and cool, but it can sometimes turn to disappointment when the final cut of the film bares very little resemblance to that what was initially promised through illustrations. Only time will tell if that will be the case Guillermo del Toro and the upcoming Pacific Rim, but for now what we have are some pretty damn cool paintings.

In their latest issue, Total Film has unveiled two never-before-seen pieces of concept art for the giant monsters vs. giant robots blockbuster, and have been kind enough to release both of them online. The works were made by Doug Williams and seem to show two very different scenes from the film. The first is set in some kind of winter environment and is meant to really show the scale of the giant mech suits called Jaegers. Notice how the machine seems to be so far in the distance and yet still towers above absolutely everything?

Quote
The next image is something a bit more obscure and probably isn't recognizable to anyone other than those who are actually working on the film. The magazine, however, says that it's a "freaky Skull Temple that’s fused with its derelict urban surroundings." Hard to say if that's the official line from the studio, but let's just run with it...

You know what's funny, when I first got into Photoshop and I was creating my own Posters from stuff that I had written, I instinctively used a lot of these styles. They get embedded into your psyche over the years and it's hard to break free from them because it's all we see. I really can't see anything beyond these most cliched styles. Some work, some don't and some should never be used.

Chuck TV Promo Poster (Comic Con 2009)

One of my favorite Posters. I just don't have a f*cking clue who did this and I can't find anything online regarding information to put my mind at ease. Ugh!

2014 is coming to a close, which means there are only a few more days left in the 35th anniversary of Ridley Scott‘s Alien. We recently pronounced the sci-fi masterpiece the director’s best film and there weren’t many arguments about that. Not only did the film create a star and a franchise, it set the standard for what sci-fi horror could be. The film’s designs and environments set a standard for what fans could expect from other films. Visually, Alien is just about as iconic as a movie can be.

Visuals are where the Poster Posse lives. The online poster collective has been making posters for all kinds of releases over the past year or so. To wrap up 2014, they’ve made at set of 35th anniversary Alien posters. Check out a few of our favorites below.

Honest Movie Posters

Quote
It seems like everyone has something to gripe about with this year's nominations for the 87th Academy Awards (except for maybe the nominees themselves), and we even looked at some of the most egregious snubs along with the pleasing surprises from this year's field of honorees. But rather than gripe about the nominations, The Shiznit (via The Playlist) took aim at most of the big players this awards season and gave them honest movie posters. American Sniper, Selma, The Theory of Everything, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Foxcatcher and more all get skewered. Love or hate the movies, these are clever.
