I need to clarify.

I am not a fan of watching sports. I'd rather do sports.

There are exceptions. Especially as I get older, I can't play like I use to. So I'm relegated to watching if need be.

But for the life of me, watching certain sporting events are major snooze-fests

I liked parts of the Opening Ceremony. I don't think it's as awesome as most are making it out to be. The things that I did like specifically were the Smoke Stacks that rose from the ground, the forging of the Rings (Reeeeeeeeally cool), the small individual cauldrons that merged into one giant cauldron and the arrival of the Torch by way of speedboat. Paul McCartney was particularly good. The things I didn't like where the Mary Poppins, Kids jumping on the beds (Peter Pan) and the floats. I'd give it an overall 3 1/2 Stars out of 5.

Wheeee! Misty May and Kerri Walsh advance to the next round. But this too wasn't easy. They were tested in the second set and I though their streak was over. But they are professionals and showed the world why they are the best by pulling off a 6-1 run to close it out and move on. Awesome!! I couldn't find a video on YouTube of the match to post. My guess is that as soon as it's up, it gets pulled down. So, you will have to settle for the above image in its place. Well, my girls came roaring back to win the match which is all that matters. But I have a bone to pick with NBC. I wait all day for certain events, especially May/Walsh and what does NBC do? They only show the last of the first set, go to commercial break which is what 4 minutes top and go right into Set 3, skipping Set 2 all together. I hate this truncated  b u l l s h i t  mentality of whoever is running NBC.

Boxing Body Expel Referee from Olympic Games

Quote
LONDON (AP) - An Olympic boxing referee from Turkmenistan has been expelled from the London Games over his handling of a bout in which the result was overturned on appeal.

Boxing's governing body, known as AIBA, says referee Ishanguly Meretnyyazov "is on his way back home."

In a bantamweight fight on Wednesday, Satoshi Shimizu of Japan was declared the loser despite repeatedly knocking down Magomed Abdulhamidov of Azerbaijan.

AIBA upheld Japan's appeal and said the referee "should have counted at least three" knockdowns and stopped the contest.

AIBA also has suspended German referee Frank Scharmach for five days, and expelled technical official Aghajan Abiyev of Azerbaijan. The governing body says Abiyev was responsible for "a number of breaches" of its code of conduct.

Amazing day for Team USA today.

We have ourselves a All-American Final in Women's Beach Volleyball! Yay!!! Both matches were incredible....and scary! Too close for my comfort.

Aly Raisman rocked the house with her Floor Exercise to win Gold to go along with her Bronze that she won on a protest. She was amazing! More here...

Aly Raisman wins gold on floor routine (http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/olympics/aly-raisman-wins-gold-on-floor-routine-gabby-douglas-falters-on-balance-beam/2012/08/07/05bf85bc-e0ad-11e1-a421-8bf0f0e5aa11_story.html)

Not related to USA, but the biggest scare came when Matthias Steiner dropped 432 Pounds on his neck, pinning him to the floor. He could have easily snapped his neck. He is so lucky to walk away from it. Yikes. More here....

Weight of expectation too much for Steiner  (http://www.watoday.com.au/olympics/news-london-2012/weight-of-expectation-too-much-for-steiner-as-salimi-takes-gold-20120808-23t3d.html)

This is more geeky than anything, but since it's very prominent in the Olympics currently, thought I'd post...

What is with that weird tape Olympians are wearing?

(http://img2.wpdigital.net/rf/image_480x270/2010-2019/WashingtonPost/2012/08/07/Production/WashingtonPost/Images/2012-07-31T154701Z_01_OLYPSQ40_RTRIDSP_3_OLY-SCIENCE-TAPE-DAY4.jpg)

Quote
German beach volleyball player Katrin Holtwick might be more internationally famous for the aquamarine lines of tape trailing down her midriff than her serves and spikes. But the 28-year-old Olympian isn’t making a fashion statement; she’s using the tape to alleviate pain and perform better. In theory, anyway.

Kinesiology tape, or kinesio tape for short, is a flexible, cloth tape, which athletic trainers apply on achy muscles to relieve pain or to encourage muscles to work more efficiently. People specifically trained to apply the tape place it over the muscles in precise ways; the tape exerts force on the muscles so they are more synchronized.

“It’s cotton tape that has some sort of adhesive that mimics the elasticity of the skin,” says Dr. Aaron Mares, an assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at UPMC Sports Medicine and associate team physician for the University of Pittsburgh football team.

Other notable Olympics tape sightings: Beach volleyball star Kerri Walsh Jennings has taped up her right shoulder, the Chinese synchronized diving pair striped their lower backs with the stuff and every other commercial break there seems to be an ad for the brand of tape called SpiderTech. But aficionados of kinesio tape aren't all elite, Olympic-level athletes -- amateur runners and cyclists, for example, use the stuff, too.

Fans of kinesio tape say it reduces pain by increasing blood flow and encouraging lymphatic drainage. It's also intended to help the muscle work correctly after an injury. Say a beach volleyball player has a sore muscle in her shoulder. She might serve a bit differently because she’s using her other muscles to overcompensate for the tender one. The kinesio tape -- again, in theory -- should reduce the inflammation that causes pain and encourage her muscles to move properly.

“If there is a structural damage like a torn ACL or meniscus, it’s not going to be effective; after all, it’s tape,” explains Dr. David Geier, an orthopaedic surgeon at the Medical University of South Carolina and director of its sports medicine program.

Currently, there is not a lot of research indicating that kinesio tape actually works -- but if athletes believe it helps, that in itself might be enough. It could be an example of the placebo effect, the phenomenon when people feel better after taking a pill, even though it might be inactive. Traditional taping -- such as what’s used for a sprained ankle -- and kinesio tape helps people with proprioception, a person’s perception of where a body part exists in relation to their body. Even just that simple act of re-familiarization with the athlete's own body may help give them the feeling that their body is aligned and whole -- and ready to compete.

“[Kinesio tape] is not something that harms the patients. If athletes feel this may help benefit them from a performance standpoint, I have no problems with them trying it,” says Mares.

But kinesio tape alone probably won't make injuries go away, Grier adds. He recommends tending to sports injuries with remedies including physical therapy, icing and taking over-the-counter pain relievers, like aspirin or ibuprofen.

What a great match for the Bronze Medal in Women's Beach Volleyball. Team Brazil Vs. Team China. It looked like Team China was on a major swing of momentum after destroying Team Brazil in the first Set. And they didn't look all that impressive in the second Set as they were coming apart at the seems. But they dug deep and rallied to take the second set and eventually the Match in the third Set.

I love BMX, but I think Skateboarding should have been an official Olympic sport way before BMX. If the IOC wants to elevate their exposure to a younger crowd, they need to make it official for the next Summer Olympics (Rio de Janeiro). You have to have Shaun White still in his "prime" so that he can compete. He would bring in more viewers for sure.

Overall, the London Summer Olympics were awesome. Not because we dominated in the Medal category, but that there were some amazing performances by a lot of different athletes from all over the world. Some new stars were born (Team USA Women's Gymnastics, Missy Franklin) and some legends calling it a career (Michael Phelps, Misty May and Kerri Walsh). Just a very enjoyable 2 weeks for me, in spite of NBC dropping the ball in a lot of instances.

As for the Closing Ceremonies, it was pretty good. Not great. I never expect it to be great because in most cases, the one throwing the party usually throws everything in, including the kitchen sink. I will say that for me the highlite of the night was clearly Queen (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/music/queen-discography/msg4789/#msg4789), more specifically, Freddie Mercury. I knew, as long as a year ago, that they would work in Freddie's 'sing-along' bit into the program and it was awesome as always. I give.....

Aw crap, did this happen?

Surprised viewers also took the network to task for editing out parts of the ceremony, including performances by Muse and Ray Davies of the Kinks.

Some Olympics fans found yet another reason to be unhappy with NBC on Sunday night.

London 2012: NBC Criticized for Failing to Broadcast Events Live, Opting for Primetime Tape Delay

•London Olympics 2012
The network edited out parts of the closing ceremony, including performances by Muse's Matt Bellamy, Ray Davies of the Kinks and a second song by George Michael, and then at 11 p.m. abruptly cut away to show a preview of the new comedy Animal Practice.

Before the commercial break, announcer Bob Costas told viewers: "That concludes the closing ceremony. We'll be back to wrap things up after this."

After the break, he then revealed that the remainder of the closing ceremony -- which the network billed as a "closing party" -- would actually air an hour later, following a sneak preview of Animal Practice and local news.

"We'll be back from Olympic Stadium in about an hour for the London closing party, featuring The Who," he said.

"Stay tuned now for a full episode of Animal Practice, a new NBC comedy, presented commercial free."

The move surprised and frustrated some viewers, including Glee star Kevin McHale, who tweeted: "DEAR NBC. Interrupting the Olympic closing ceremony for an hr to air a show about a fictional animal dr. before it ends is a disgrace. Shame on you."

And the Robot Chicken account noted, "Doing a Twitter search for 'Animal Practice' right now is like tapping a keg of pure hate."

While some people on Twitter praised the show, many others weren't happy about NBC's scheduling decision.
Tweeted Ski Vegas, "#NBCFail #AnimalPractice is now the most hated show in America before the first episode. Amazing."

Added another named Lawrence Escamilla: "I may not be a The Who fan, but cutting them off to show terrible Animal Practice is just another thing to add to the #NBCfail list."
NBC has been criticized throughout the Games for its decision to show the events on tape delay, sparking the creation of the Twitter hashtag #NBCFail.

The Animal Practice preview also came about an hour after DirecTV went dark in Los Angeles for a half-hour during the closing ceremony, meaning some subscribers missed several of the show's performances.

And NBC wonders why they are failing as a Network. It's no wonder they are dead last in everything they do. Sure, they will get a huge bump in the ratings for the last 2 weeks, but in the end, they  f u c k  the viewers over yet again. I was really surprised in how it ended last night. Why premiere a show that late? Most people are in bed sleeping. So how does this help a new show? All it's going to do is infuriate people that want a legit wrap up of the Olympics. My guess is now people will boycott not just this show, but most new shows airing on NBC.

First thing I thought of is this were true, some top exec had a pet project of making this Animal Hospital happen, no matter at what costs. All the flunkies underneath fearing for their lives to say anything sensible to this guy.

Better pull their heads out of said asses.

This is exactly the kind of thinking that brought the Big 3 in the automotive arena down. We know what the customer wants. We’ll dictate it to them.

That was a colossal dumb freakin decision.

I've always been somewhat of a rebel at any job I've had over the years and I've never had a problem calling out my Bosses and Supervisors on dumbs ideas they've had or wanted to implement into the job, even if would make me the odd man out in the end. Didn't care. So, if I were employed at NBC during this years Olympics and knew first hand what 'Top Exec' was going to do with regards to the Closing Ceremonies, I absolutely would have gone straight to the top....to the 'Big Cheese', whoever the  f u c k  that may be and I would have gladly voiced my concerns and laid out what the fallout would be. If I got fired, so be it. At least I wouldn't be some knucklehead with no balls.

I've learned over the years to never just go straight to your Supervisor (the one that's just a step above your pay grade) to get anything done. First off, they never follow through because most fear for their own place in the company and second, if they do actually relay the information, they usually take the credit for the idea.

'Meet the Superhumans': Paralympians burst onto world stage

Quote
LONDON -- A battlefield explosion sends troops flying, a speeding car flips over on a highway, a "Murderball" player is knocked right out of his wheelchair, all set to a fierce Public Enemy soundtrack.

"Forget everything you thought you knew about strength. Forget everything you thought you knew about humans. It's time to do battle. Meet the Superhumans."

That’s how British TV viewers are being introduced to this year’s Paralympic athletes by Channel 4, which is broadcasting the London 2012 Games. Its campaign is giving Superbowl ads a run for their money, going viral with more than 500,000 views on YouTube alone.
