Title: The Hold List
Post by: Chiprocks1 on August 24, 2012, 11:05:42 am
I am always maxed out with 25 Holds at the Library for DVD's I'm waiting for and usually I have plenty more that I want to check out. I usually write those that I can't Hold on paper. But like always, they get lost and I forget what title it was. So, this Thread is geared strictly to extending your Hold List, while also doing your part to save trees. If it weren't for the Library, half of what I have reviewed so far, I would have never gotten around to seeing. I spent way too much money on DVD's (Blind Buys) that just didn't pan out as keepers. The Mom and Pop Stores never carried the Big releases until like a year after the fact and Blockbuster was like paying for a new copy for Rentals on release day, so that was out. I just stopped buying all together and missed out on a ton of releases during a 5 year window. So, I'm slowly hitting those titles and keeping up with current releases as well.

I will be updating my Extended Hold List with new titles to keep them all in one place, instead of just posting new stuff.

Big update to my Extended List. I included movies I own on DVD in with the list as I want to work those in with the stuff that I've yet to see.

I always have 400+ DVDs on my Netflix queue... I'm such an addict, but it beats buying.  Lot of it is TV shows, since I don't get HBO it's the only way I can see Game of Thrones or BoardWalk Empire (just finished the first seasons of both and loved them... and I have such a crush on Kelly MacDonald).
Title: Re: The Hold List

I don't have HBO or Showtime so I have to avoid spoilers and wait for it on DVD. I actually prefer it this way. Shows like Thrones, Breaking Bad, Dexter play so much better when I can knock out 2-3 episodes a day. If I had to wait a week for one episode, I'd blow my brains out.
Title: Re: The Hold List
Post by: Neumatic on September 13, 2012, 08:39:12 pm
Exactly.  And HD over the air isn't as good as HD off a disc.

And now I have a rule:  I'll only watch ONE HBO season of one show at a time, otherwise it gets a little muddly in my mind.

I got rid of premium cable a long time ago and I haven't looked back since. It was Mac that got me into the idea of hitting my local library for all the free DVD "rentals". The amount of money I have saved can't even be calculated. Well, it can, but I don't have that much time to sit down and do math.

Maybe just maybe many of these will play on some shocktober channels? AMC, TNT, FX, god forbid SyFy
Title: Re: The Hold List
Post by: Chiprocks1 on September 27, 2012, 08:32:35 pm
I own a few of these on DVD already. The rest I will have to get from the Library. But my guess is that everyone has the same idea of knocking these out for Halloween and if there are only a couple of DVD per movie, it's gonna be a long wait.

I've seen everything that's in my Halloween List. I just want to do nothing but Scary movies for October in Marathon style. For the Main List I would say maybe 1/4 I haven't seen.

The Big Bang Theory (Season 4)
The Big Band Theory (Season 5)
Breaking Bad (Season 4)
Boardwalk Empire (Season 1)
Underworld: Awakening
Homeland (Season 1)
Drive
The Amazing Spider-Man
Snow White and the Huntsman
Surrogates
Man On A Ledge
Drillbit Taylor

Also....

For Your Eyes Only
The Spy Who Loved Me
Moonraker
Octop*ssy
A view To A Kill
The Living Daylights
Licence To Kill
The World Is Not Enough

My Hold List is maxed out. This is what is currently on the menu for me. I also wanted to do a James Bond marathon as well. I do own the Sean Connery and Roger Moore Set on VHS and a few of Pierce Brosnan on DVD. I couldn't add any of Daniel Craig's Bond onto my list because I maxed it out at 25. But the marathon will definitely roll right into his run as well. And if you're actually counting the above list. I have 5 books on hold as well you jackasses!

So Goldfinger is on the SyFy channel today. A marathon of 007 movies... odd really.

Anyway, within the first 20 minutes, I noticed sooooo many screw ups in the film. I mean to the point of I'm not sure I can watch this without rolling my eyes constantly.

I about laughed out loud at Bond's uh, pool clothes. Whoa.... Ga-ayyy. Seriously, that was a style for men at some point?

(http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Observer/Columnist/Columnists/2012/10/2/1349190954249/Goldfinger-008.jpg)

If you remember the beginning is Bond pissing off Goldfinger by screwing with him during his hobby of card play by the pool. He breaks into the girls hotel room who is watching with stationary binoculars. Well, the binoculars apparently are very powerful. Perfect view of Goldfingers hand. But did you notice when Bond talk to Goldfinger the view through the binocular is Goldfingers face? Impossible if the point of the binoculars is his hand.

When Oddjob sneaks up, yea right, sneaks up on James Bond, in a quiet hotel room, one karate chop to Bond's neck, where Bond, doesn't immediately go unconscious, but slowly goes unconscious.

The girl is painted in gold... killing her by suffocating her? Yea, no. Humans don't breath through their skin

Seriously, I know the love for Connery as Bond, but some of these old films are silly at times.

Not unlike films today.  ;D

Everything you just said about Bond is spot-on. These are the same things I noticed as a kid watching them for the first time. I actually started with Roger Moore. He was the Bond that was in full effect at the time they were hitting the theaters. Connery was before my time but I have come to appreciate what he brought to the role and do like a few of his Bond films even if Roger Moore THE Bond in my eyes.
Title: Re: The Hold List
Post by: Mac on November 23, 2012, 10:43:24 am
I hear more discussions about this. People hold Connery close to their heart and memories, but dayum watching them today, it gets kind of cringe worthy.

I really like the Daniel Craig interpretation. Pierce Brosnan was better but there are some moments of WTF.
Title: Re: The Hold List
Post by: Chiprocks1 on November 23, 2012, 11:18:22 am
I have no problems with Craig or Brosnon. I actually like their roles as Bond a lot. But for me, I got into Bond when it was Moore and that is why he is the true Bond.
Title: Re: The Hold List
Post by: Neumatic on November 26, 2012, 11:52:21 pm
I know when I open up "Carte Blanche" I should be picturing a young James Bond with black hair and a big scar, but when I see the name, I see Daniel Craig... probably because I never really dug Bond until he came along.

BTW, considering Netflix's hold list maxes at 500 (and it's not enough for me), I can't IMAGINE managing only 25.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

I own the first one on DVD, but believe it or not, I never bothered to see the other films that followed. Gonna try and knock these out.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Star Trek: Generations
Star Trek: First Contact
Star Trek: Insurrection
Star Trek: Nemesis
Star Trek
Star Trek into Darkness (Adding this, even though it won't be on DVD for a long time)

Even though I said elsewhere that I'm more of a Star Wars fan and didn't really care for the Star Trek Universe (until the Reboot came out), I'm gonna try and watch all the Star Trek films back to back as I have never done that nor have I ever bother with the second generation cast films.

I just want to see if I am missing something here. I've never understood the die-hard reaction toward the series. But then again, people can say the same thing about Star Wars as well. I dunno. Will see how far I can take the marathon.

You can skip the NextGen movies after First Contact.  And really, that's the only NextGen flick worth watching (the reboot was in no small part due to those last flicks)-- there's some Nexus stuff I actually like (Picard vs Soran's whole attitude towards time and life), but really, you can jump from 6 to 8 no problem.  I don't even own the other flicks but those.  Just remember the movies, particularly the first one, are products of their time.

A couple years ago I watched the original series when it came out on Blu-Ray and I decided I would watch it in the mindset of someone who'd never seen the show, and that this show isn't connected to the movie or NextGenverse (cause really, it isn't).  And I enjoyed it on a whole other level, and the whole wild west aspect of it came out much more strongly, as well as the whole feeling of them being this one little ship at the edge of known space venturing out and encountering weird sh*t.

Remember, the die hard love for Trek came from all the series (well, not Enterprise... or really, Voyager either), not the movies.  And if you don't dig regular Trek, you might like Deep Space Nine, it's like the Fight Club of the Trek-verse, darker subject matter, big war arcs, religious issues in the forefront...

I did like in the first episode how they realized that the other addresses worked but needed to be adjusted to account for drifting.  And I also dig how different universes have different gate styles.

Sad to say, but I've only seen parts of the original and none of the remake. I may or may not have seen most of the original when I was in elementary school. I can't remember anything of the movie. But as soon as I play it I will know one way or another.

The Hold List on Penny Can is just so that I will have things lined up and remember to hit the Library as soon as the DVD drops so that I can get in line earlier. I hate coming in late and end up at the ass end of the line, usually around 120th, give or take a 1,000. Ack!!

I am still... STILL... waiting for The Elephant Man.  That's my big wait one, alongside "Little Nemo" (yeah, I'm sure I'm never going to get to see that one.  Somehow I feel like it being on the list is like some sort of cosmic joke in my direction).

As for my "saved" (as in "who knows when these will pop up?") queue I already have the first season of Family Tree on there, along with the Kids In The Hall reunion specials and James Franco's Saturday Night, which I saw when it was in the festival circuit but I'd like to see it again, if only to see John Malkovich sobbing hysterically while singing the Empire Carpet Commercial jingle.  AGAIN!  AGAIN!  It REALLY gets me that no one else I know who sees that commercial knows about that because it makes me laugh like crazy every time.

I just put Movie 43 on my list.

From what I've been reading, this is clearly the worst movie ever made.

I have to see it.

I forgot about Movie 43... though I was a bit disappointed to see the trailer and realized it was basically going to feel like Scary Movie.

Following the lead of Mac, I decided to go ahead and place a hold on I Know Who Killed Me. When I was putting together my Lindsay Lohan marathon, I flirted with adding this, in spite of the harsh reviews. I didn't. But now I have. Stay tuned....

No spoilers till I get it in my hand. Thanks.

There's a good takedown of it early on in the "How Did This Get Made" series.  Just FYI.

Poltergeist 1-3
Frality

I'm hoping for the best on the cable channels. I think Showtime has some stuff planned. AMC typically does.

Okay, I resorted my Netflix instant queue and got a whole slew of horror movies... dunno if I'll get around to them all, but

* House On Haunted Hill
* The Hole
* The Frighteners
* Andromeda Strain (probably not)
* Red State
* Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark
* Let The Right One In
* The Last Circus (F'ed up movie, dudes, dunno if it's "horror" but it's creepy as anything)
* Paranorman
* Burke & Hare
* Cabin In The Woods (I saw it not too long ago, but I'll watch it again)
* Mimic (which I've never seen)

Been wanting to check out Circus
Red State is not per se a horror film in the traditional sense
Andromeda Strain just appears to be so slow by today's standards.
House on Haunted Hill (1999) I really like until the 3rd act.
Really enjoy Mimic, a del Toro film

Got a good line up there.

Just a little suggestion, put in your request for the other Seasons now, because once you start, you will be plowing through these very fast and it's best to have them ready to go instead of finishing a season and then having to wait weeks and in my case....months for the next one.

On occasion there is a song that just grabs me. I found a site that actually tracks them (http://breakingbad.wikia.com/wiki/Music)... because the Soundtracks are not doing it
Now I need to research and find those songs

PSS: I'm not going to even list my queue for Netflix. It's embarrassing.

I noticed a bunch of shows that I have on DVD that I haven't watched forever, they're all incomplete so I would have to rent or buy this missing seasons (it would probably be REAL cheap to fill all those holes).  I put the list in that portfolio scrap notebook!  That needs a name...

Anyway, on top of all those shows I'm due to revisit (Stargate Atlantis), I somehow got the hair brained idea that I should try and watch Andromeda again (one of those shows I could never get on DVD because it was so freakin' expensive).  So I'll be waiting forever for that first disc to become available.

My library is getting The Interview and so far requests have been very weak. A 100 reserves? That's extremely mild compared to a top requested movie.

I haven't reserved it mainly because it looks mediocre at best. I may pick it up off the shelf one day.

Update on my hold list. Lots new orders came in after Jan 1st...

Get On Up
Lucy
The Devil’s Hand

I'm not sure what's going on with the Library system. Currently I have only 6 things on hold. Normally it's maxed out at 50. They haven't had anything new for weeks. I see a number of things to be released on DVD soon, but nothing in our system.  >:(

I did notice one little trend and saw the library was ordering several DVD's that were coming on Netflix at the same time. Mind you, these are not great movies. But if the system is starting to recognize overlap and odd requests, maybe, just maybe they are reviewing their purchases?

Ya know my situation regarding new releases at my Library Branch. I'm always 2-3 months behind you guys in getting sh*t delivered to me because the hold list is insanely long. I'm usually anywhere from 50th to 150th on any given title and THAT sucks! Well, I logged in today to check any new releases that may or may not have come out (there is never a set day or time to check. They come in when they come in). Some how I managed to get pretty close to the top of the wait list on a couple of big titles. I'm in the top 10 for 3 DVD titles, one of them being Batman V Superman. A title like that and I'm usually at the back of the line.....even for one that is universally panned by fans and critics. I'm also in the top 20 for a book I had to make a request for them to order. All in all, a good day for holds. ;D
Title: Re: The Hold List

So much for getting in on the action before everyone else. Where I managed to get in the top 10 with a few titles 2 weeks, I'm sitting at around 280 in the queue for Zootopia. WTF!

I put my name on the Hold List for The Arrival and I'm #407. WHAT THE F*CK! Seriously, I've never been that far down a wait list for anything at my Library. We don't even have that many people here for those kinds of numbers! Ack!
Title: Re: The Hold List

The ideal time to put a movie on the list, it would seem, is when the movie is announced.

I've tried that. The Library won't put anything up for Hold until the DVD is officially announced with a release date and unless I'm aware of said announcement, I usually end up at the back of the line. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back.
