Title: Gridiron Gang (2006)

Gridiron Gang

Gridiron Gang can best be described as a mash up of Boyz N The Hood and The Longest Yard. I'm a sucker for these types of True Stories involving a bunch of misfits, coming together and working as a team and succeeding in the end. If you watch this film you will see that it follows the formula usually associated with sports films. All the beats are there and you can count them off one by one. The filmmakers behind Gridiron Gang had their hearts in the right place when putting this together, but at times it veers into cliche-land. Also, some of the scenes are just a little too preachy for my taste. I know it's about inspiring people to rise up, push forward and never quit. There are a few scenes that are also too close to that of an After School Special which kind of brings it down a notch. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson did a good job for sure and he has charisma to carry a movie that may not being perfect, which this is not.

It's a good movie, but it could have been a lot better if they had cut down on some of the "motivational" sermons. This is definitely a Rent and you will enjoy the movie for sure. Had they cut some of the scenes out of the final cut of the movie that I mentioned before, this would easily be a 5 Star movie. Stick around through the end credits to see the real Coach and the players the film is based on. Very fascinating to see.
