Title: Best Fast Food Burger Joints
Post by: Chiprocks1 on October 17, 2012, 05:43:42 pm
Okay, today was (still is) extremely hot. So hot that turning on the oven to cook up fries with my home cooked hamburger is out of the question. So, I went down to Jack In The Box to get me some fries to go with my Monster burger. Yum. With that, I thought of a new thread, the very one you are reading right now.

So, What's The Best Best Fast Food Burger Joint Ever? Each has it's pros and cons and some just suck no matter what. I can't vote for White Castle as it doesn't exist here and I have no idea what it's like, even though they sell frozen White Castle at VONS. Fatburger I had once and long time ago and remember nothing. Hard Rock Cafe I remember liking, but it was grossly overpriced and that too was years ago. For me the best Hamburger I've ever had at a restaurant per the price paid (under 5 bucks with unlimited refills and a HUGE salad) goes to Carrow's. This was in Vegas and a one time thing about 15 years ago. Never been to another Carrow's since then.

But I'm going to limit my choices to the others in the list. In-N-Out for me has the best Hamburgers and Milk Shakes, but the fries are meh. Jack In The Box has the best french fries and I love the Sourdough Jack, still to this day. Although their absolute BEST hamburger they ever had was the Bacon Cheese Burger with Black Seed Buns from the late 70's/early 80's. Why they decided to mess with the recipe and change it I'll never know. For it's still the biggest f*ck up they ever did. When it came time to go to JIB as a kid, THIS was the same thing I'd get every time and ranks up there with the Greatest ever for me.

Wendy's, I haven't eaten there a whole lot. Last time was maybe 15 years ago and it wasn't all that. Burger King, they give the best bang for your buck. Taste good and it's reasonably priced. Mickey Dee's, I use to eat there all the time as a kid with my Grandparents. Brings back fond memories, even if their menu now sucks. Haven't eaten there in years.

So, I would say that Quality + Value = In-N-Out

FYI, I don't eat out a whole lot. I'm putting this thread and list together over many many years of eating at different restaurants.

Oh jeez, we have White Castles everywhere. Some think its the best. I will admit they are best for the late night drunk runs. None better. I really don't like them just to eat. They have a very distinctive taste and more so... Smell.

I'm not a big hamburger fan. I do hate those cookie cutter, pre-made burgers. That's just low. Our Steak N Shake are nice thin burgers with a crispy edge, which is rather tasty, but I really don't dream about getting burgers

White Castle started in Jersey right? And since I've never seen one on the West Coast, I still take it that it's a East Coast Chain. I've never really be compelled to get the frozen ones. I can't imagine them even coming close to tasting the same from a legit outlet.

The die Hards would probably disagree. Get it any way they can. I've heard stories of people who moved away and will take frozen just to get their fix. Fresh made is good. I wouldn't know about frozen. Heard if you heat it right, it comes close.

Well then, since I don't see myself heading to the East Coast anytime soon, I guess I will try out the frozen White Castle. On the box, I remember it looking tiny.

That's what she said.

Seriously, the frozen package makes it look like finger foods.

I can't believe Five Guys isn't even on the ballot  It's pretty much the only "fast food" place I eat at anymore.  And really, they're the only fries I can think of that you can pop in the fridge, reheat later, and still have them taste good.

Added to the Poll. Now you have no excuse not to vote. And do the same over here (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/food-wine/best-pizza-joints/msg13179/#msg13179) as well. We actually have a Five Guys here. Until you brought it up, I had no idea that it was even a nationwide chain. I was certain it was some local 'Mom and Pop' store since I have never seen or heard of any commercials for it.

It started off as one.  It's kind of amazing that they don't need advertising, people just know it (thought that picture of Obama and/or Biden at one during the election probably helped a bit).  Although isn't In-N-Out local?
Title: Re: Best Fast Food Burger Joints

I don't know how (or if at all) this factors into your considerations, but I had a surprisingly lousy (and cold) Five Guys dinner yesterday, but since I ordered for two I got the large fries so there were more than enough to save and reheat... and you put 'em in an oven and reheat they taste great.  How many other places on the list is that even an option?
Title: Re: Best Fast Food Burger Joints

I've yet to even try eating at Five Guys Pizza/Hambuger joint.
Title: Re: Best Fast Food Burger Joints
Post by: Mac on July 11, 2013, 10:11:16 am
I find Five Guys remarkably underwhelming. Hey, it's a chain with bags and boxes of potatoes in the dining area.

Went there once, that was enough.

I just find chain burger joints, just what they are. Not much to see here.

So it this a Burger joint first or a Pizza joint? Whenever I walk by, I usually smell Pizza cooking the majority of the time.
Title: Re: Best Fast Food Burger Joints

Pizza?

Didn't even notice.

I'd say burger because of said bags of potatoes they 'decorate' with.  :-\

Yeah, they have the same "set dressing" here as well, which I always thought was a bit odd, kinda like they were too lazy to finish storing their food in the back after deliveries.

Five Guys, to me, is a step above Wendy's or McDonalds (which I have once a year, maybe, when an emergency arises and I need something could pass as food).  Five Guys is JUST burgers and dogs and fries, it's very no frills (I mean, why would you decorate a bag that's just gonna be thrown out) and they give you a BUTTLOAD of fries.  Like, they fill a drinky cup with fries, then empty another scoopy shovel of fries in on top.

You have to at least try that, man, I've heard that it rivals In-N-Out although I haven't tried that before (and I'm also a fan of plain burgers, I don't like stuff on my food).
Title: Re: Best Fast Food Burger Joints
Post by: Chiprocks1 on July 14, 2013, 05:37:13 am
Well, since you said it rivals In-N-Out, which is what I consider to be the best of the Burger Joints, I may just try and get down to Five Guys sometime this week to make that comparison myself.

This could definitely go in the 'What the F*ck Thread'. Seriously......$250?

Did you ever try 5 Guys?

Anyway, one the Talk guys on the Dave Glover show I listened to, went on about His recent California visit. In particular. He and callers talked about In and Out... Great praise for it. Apparently it just as far east as Arizona.

Ugh
Title: Re: Best Fast Food Burger Joints

Haven't tried 5 Guys yet. I take it that you've never hit In-N-Out Burger? Not in your neighborhood? I thought for sure it was a Nationwide Chain, given how popular and awesome it is.
Title: Re: Best Fast Food Burger Joints

I'm gonna be shallow here. Seeing the name In And Out, first glance, sounds like 60's greasy spoon.

I know, I know... I'm bad.

I don't think we have 'em.
Title: Re: Best Fast Food Burger Joints
Post by: Neumatic on March 28, 2014, 01:25:14 am
Or it could be a reference to how quick the food goes through you.

I'm sure I'll try In-And-Out if I'm ever there, but seeing as I don't like a lot of embellishment on my burgers, I can't imagine I'll get the full experience everyone keeps talking about.  I don't like the spread, sue me!

Speaking of burgers, saw, I believe, a Sunday Morning segment on this niche burger joint in downtown New York. They don’t have condiments and in fact frown on discussion about that kind of thing. Their perspective is the meat brings the noise and altering it with mustard, relish or anything else is sacrilegious. I get it actually. That’s how I feel about my steaks (filet). On the rare occasion, I’ve gone the other direction and ordered filets with cheese topping or an indescribable sauce.

But don't you have Steak Sauce when you eat a hearty steak, etc...? I can't do without it. Same goes for condiments on Hamburgers.

That's the point... You really haven't tasted good meat. In the foodies circle, steak sauce, catsup, condiments in general change the whole taste.

And I'm part of that group that over time have discovered good meat. I was raised in a household where we got steak once in awhile (always meat at every dinner), but it was cheap steak. Actually not very tasty and yes, the thinking was put bar-b-Q sauce or steak sauce to 'enhance' the flavor.

Believe me, when you are served good meat, prepared properly, you will know it. Adding steak sauce you'll realize puts it back to not much more than eating cardboard.

Well that's just stupidity. It's way more than that. I wouldn't want to talk to, let alone associate with someone who admitted to eating a $250 steak. Something is wrong with you. Stupid, retarded, power, egotistical, look at me... something.

Good for you if you can afford it. I don't care. The only thing I care about is to know their are idiots who can and will throw away their money.

This happens in all forms of business. Wine prices, Art, Media (speakers and audio equipment), just to name a few. There comes a point, where you just cannot tell the difference, but money is spent on 'image'.

Phuck that!!!!

Tried 5 Guys once... nothing special. Don't get me wrong. I find burgers low on my priority to 'be special'. I just eat 'em to fill up.

There is only one place (local) that actually stand out. It's called O'Connells (http://www.yelp.com/biz/o-connells-pub-saint-louis-2).

We continually have many places that open up that are supposed to be the next thing. Crystals comes to mind. Lots of buzz and praise. I tried it. I was greatly disappointed. Didn't see any of that (taste, atmosphere, uniqueness).

My focus is more on Pizza... Still looking for the holy grail of good great pizza

Eh, they keep raising the rent around here, it really sucks b/c there's a lot of home-grown businesses and restaurants in my neighbourhood that are just going to be unfairly priced out of the competition so more higher-end chain sh*t can take their place.

Do you want hepatitis A with that burger?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3tVu2yYhq4

I don't even think we have a Red Robin around here. As a matter of fact, never even heard of the place until a few weeks ago when I caught one of their 'Birthday' Commercials.

UPDATE:

I Googled to see if we do have one locally. We do. Only one is in La Jolla. Also checked to see when they were established. How the f*ck does a chain exist for 45 years and I'm just NOW hearing about them? What the f*ck!

45 years? Seriously. I think around here, maybe 20 years I've know about them.

Hate them actually... because they are 'family' style... meaning kids running around, parties, ballons.. and that BS that doesn't have anything to do with good food.

I've eaten there twice in my lifetime. 2 times 2 many.

Then what is it that people flock to McDonald’s?
Cheap? Fast? Convenient? Kid friendly?

If the taste is just OK, why would McDonald's be the go to place.

I only go if absolutely necessary. That's doesn't happen very often.

I'm sure the fact that McDonalds is EVERYWHERE is a huge reason for it.  A massive install base, cheap food, kids' playground., now you got the awful coffee.  I think it's more like an anti-restaurant, you go there when you don't really want to eat but have to eat something, or if you don't have time to eat anything else, or just want to eat without thinking about it.  They're also in a lot of airports as well, I've eaten that rather than airline food (though there are some good burger places in some restaurants... there was a GREAT little homemade place in the Bob Hope Airport).  It's safe, familiar, ubiquitous, and it's the first thing you think of when you think fast food hamburger.  They've got the mental market cornered.

I'm willing to bet that the higher up that chart goes, the more localized the restaurants are.

To drive home the point that Neumatic was making, at the San Diego Naval Hospital, they have a McDonald's on site which is moronic. Let's take people to the hospital so that they can get better and once you check out, feel free to go down and woof it up, clog your arteries and hope to see you back next month for your bypass. But having said that, I'd stay out there visiting my Grandpa for long stretches and have nothing to eat, leaving me with two choice, them or Subway and I'd always go with Mickey Dee's because as bad as they are, Subway is even worse.

Okay, here's something that's bugged me forever... I don't know about you guys, but i don't like junk on my burgers, and every now and then my order will get screwed up and I'll get everything on top.  I've always heard "why don't you just scrape it off?" and to me, that's ALWAYS annoyed me.

It always felt condescending in a way, everyone has to know it's a pointless fix because you can still taste that sh*t soaked into the bun.  I f*ckin' had a restaurant do that to me, I could still SEE the mustard in the bun.  What the h*ll, man?  if that was an acceptable solution, I would have done that myself!  Would you think I wouldn't be able to tell?

When you're a kid it's one thing cause your parents don't want to deal with your sh*t, just eat up and shut up, but as an adult?  Guess what?  I want what I F*CKING PAID FOR!  When I say "plain" three times, you know what I expect?  Plain!

I went to J Alexander's for Easter, not a lot of people there, and this is a nice, proper restaurant... and they totally puled the scraped mustard thing on me.  It was driving me nuts, this taste I couldn't put my finger on was on a small swatch of my bread and meat but it was almost like a ghost so I couldn't complain.  I don't want to say it ruined my meal, and I understand it was a one second lapse, but still...

“I got to throw out a pitch at Dodger Stadium for 50,000 people, because it was McDonald’s night,” he says. “I got to be the first, outside of the Disney characters, to perform at Disneyland, because it was McDonald’s Night at Disneyland. I’ve been on airplanes, blimps, helicopters. I’ve got to ride horses with people like Richard Chamberlain.”

Holy cow, getting off work early enough to do some shopping, I came across a burger place I'd never heard of called "Cook Out."  It's apparently a chain, and this particular store had only been open 24 days when I came across it.  I was hungry so I figured "I'll give it a shot."

Dudes.  Wow.  Oh man, this tasted SO good.  Reminds me of a mix between the burgers my family makes on the grill and a Five Guys burger, and the fries are thick and hot... perfect.  And the turnaround was really fast, only two minutes or so.  Almost McDonalds' speed but much higher quality.

I still haven't found the time to give Five Guys Restaurant a try. It has been opened here for like 10-15 years I think.

It's still good.  I was actually thinking of getting Five Guys, but the weather was crummy and since I was going to swing by to see my sister (and Pip), I decided I wasn't going to go all the way out there.  Cook Out just happened to be on my route from work to the comic book shop (and what luck, the Spider-Gwen TPB I had been waiting for had come out YESTERDAY).
