Breaking Up Is Hard To Do

This was a riveting episode from start to finish. I am very well aware that Family Jewels is 95% staged and scripted from everyone involved. Having watched pretty much the entire run of the series, I have been able to distinguish what is staged and what is real within the show. That brings me to this episode: Breaking Up Is Hard To Do. We all know the history of Gene and his live in girlfriend Shannon of 27 years, the mother of his 2 kids and all the stuff she has to deal with regarding his infidelity.

This episode finally addresses her problem with him and his cheating ways and forces him to go to a shrink and start working on himself and his relationship with Shannon. As I said before, I can pick out what is staged and what is real. Or so I thought. Shannon's emotional break down is definitely real and it's all captured on camera. But there are a couple of instances that scream Red Flags with the legitimacy of what is going on. Case in point, Gene is asked by his therapist that he should invite Shannon to his next session so that they can begin to work on their problems as a couple. Fast forward to Gene at home asking Shannon to join him at his next session.

Fast forward to Gene's next session with Shannon sitting by his side. Here's the problem: Gene and the Therapist are wearing the exact same clothes as before, with sunglasses in his breast pocket. Hmmm.....Still not convinced? Another instance is when Gene comes home to find that Shannon has finally moved out of the house and he goes into their bedroom looking for her. The camera is positioned in such a way so that Gene initially walks pass the bed with the letter on the edge...stops....does a slooooooow turn and then picks up the note and discovers it to be her goodbye letter. This screams staged in that he is hitting his "mark".

So, if this is in fact staged I will endorse Shannon Tweed to get an Emmy nomination this year as she pulls out all the stops. But I do think her end of it is legit. Real or fake, this is still a fun show to watch.

KISS Your Family Goodbye

Watching this episode and more specifically, watching Nick, you get the sense that he really is having a hard time with his parents splitting up. There are a couple of times that you can see that he is trying so hard to keep it together because he is definitely on the verge of crying whenever he brings up the topic of his Mom, which made this a bit harder to watch than the last episode. So, with his reaction to what is going on, I will say for this particular incident, it's definitely real. This is good, addictive TV at its finest.

Staged or not, this is pretty damn entertaining and addictive. But I will say this, they editors of the show make it appear that Shannon left Gene, stayed with her sister Tracy, and then goes back to Gene to reunite. And then after that, Shannon and Gene are back in the Therapist office willing to work on the things that need to be worked on to go forward. The problem is, they are using the same footage from the previous time the two of them were in the office. You know, the one where she gets fed up with his ways and walks out of the meeting and then him all together. So yeah, the bulk of it is scripted IMO.

Anyway, somewhere during the middle of Episode 1 I got to thinking how they would end the show and it's a no brainer if you ask me. What's the one thing that everyone thinks Gene would never do? Yep. Get married. Mark my words, that's how they will end the series with Gene and Shannon finally tying the knot.

Blood Is Thicker Than Hummus

That was about the coolest episode of the series ever, which takes place entirely in Israel as Gene, Shannon and Nick head back to his hometown for the first time in 51 years when he left as a kid to go to America. Having read KISS and Make-Up (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/books/kiss-and-make-up-gene-simmons/), I had a pretty good understanding of how he felt about his hometown and what it was like growing up and also about how he didn't really know his Father and the resentment he had for him for feeling abandoned.

So, this episode opened up a floodgate of feelings that Gene had repressed for years and when he finally came face to face with the knowledge that he had a Half-Brother and 3 Half-Sisters and countless nieces and nephews, it hit him hard. I've never seen Gene weep like that....ever. It was surreal. Seeing him visit his Father's Grave site was absolutely heartbreaking. This episode didn't feel like a typical episode, but more like an hour long documentary with countless photos from his days as a child back home. This was 100% real. What a fantastic episode.

The family sticks around for a few more days in Israel to site see and Gene gives Shannon and Nick the guided tour. Compared to the last episode, this is a bit more lighter in tone with the exception of when they visit the Holocaust Museum, where Gene sees for the first time the official statement of his Mother being a former occupant of the labor camp. Pretty deep stuff.

This episode is basically a "Thank You" to the Military as Gene and Shannon head to Fort Hood to entertain and talk with the troops and see them deployed as they head off to Iraq to serve their tours. I like episodes like this and Family Jewels has done a few like these before.

Oh Gene, when the hell are you ever going to grow up and learn? So, Gene and Shannon head up to Canada to visit with Shannon's Mother and Sisters and she him around town where she lived, grew up, went to school, etc...In the process Shannon was getting the heroes welcome back home. She was clearly the star and this didn't sit well with Gene. At every turn he always tried to make it about himself. And the tipping point was at the Hockey game where Shannon got to drop the puck before the game and along the way, when she left her seat, a couple of groupies made a beeline for Gene for a photo op, which he gladly hammed up and did his "Gene thing". The kicker is that he did this in front of Shannon's Mother and Sisters who were also attending the game. Not cool.

Also noticeable was that whenever Shannon would talk....or try to talk, Gene's facial expression spoke volumes. He couldn't have been more disinterested in what she had to say. Tsk tsk. Your skating on thin ice boy-o.

The Kids Are Not Alright

This episode was heavy. Up till now, the kids have been pretty much relegated to the background as Gene and Shannon try to work on their relationship. At the urging of Gene, he ask his therapist to talk to the kids so they can voice their opinions on the situation at hand. Nick was the first to open up and get a lot off his chest. And what he had to say was pretty profound and shed a light on the turmoil that he is struggling with. Sophie on the other hand was more guarded and really didn't feel like opening up to a complete stranger. She, along with the rest of the family, had voiced that doing so on camera wasn't right. "It's a family thing that should be dealt with in private and not in front of TV camera's for the sake of entertaining people."

I don't know if Gene is ever going to "get it". He continually does and says things that are contradictory to what it is he is trying to achieve. At one point, he invites his therapist to watch the show (KISS Concert). I found this extremely inappropriate in blurring the lines of professionalism and entertainment. She knew this was wrong and immediately called him out on it. In the end, she agreed to watch "some of it". I think she did this just to placate him and move on.

But the coup de grāce of the episode was when Sophie, in group therapy FINALLY opens up and reads Gene the Riot Act. She has come a long ways and it was exhilerating to see how much she has grown. She tore into him and he had nowhere to go. He had to sit there, listen and take it all in. When this was going down, Shannon had a "holy f*ck" look on here face, which is exactly the same look on my face when watching it. Gene...classic Deer-In-Headlights reaction to what he had to hear from Sophie.

I think the debate of whether this "story arc" is fake or not has to come to an end now. It's real in my book.

HA. I KNEW IT!!!! Going all the way back to Episode 1, I had my suspicions, which I allude to in the spoiler below in Episode 3.

Spoiler (hover to show)

This was a great episode, even though most of it did seem staged, at least the ending seemed genuine. That's the good news. The bad news is I get the feeling that Hulu will not be hosting any future episodes, leaving me totally in the dark. This is a cliffhanger I don't want left hanging. Bah!!!!

The second half of Season 6 returns tonight. We were left with the biggest cliffhanger of Gene's life as he finally pops the question and asked Shannon to marry him. Not sure if Hulu will even host the episodes at all, let alone a week later. They didn't put the first half of Season 6 on Hulu until a good month and a half after the mid-season finale.

Her answer of course was yes. Now, the rest of the season will probably center around the whole wedding plans and all that stuff that comes with it. I'm sure most of the drama will stem from Gene wavering and looking for a way out of the engagement and they will probably have a huge fight or something just before they are scheduled to get hitched and then at the 11th hour everything will be fixed and they walk down the aisle. Should be a fun 2nd half of the season.

Gene passes out, hits face on the concrete floor, rips open his eyebrow and then becomes obsess with dying. So, the entire episode was about this obsession and making arrangements for the future to protect his family financially with a will and all sorts of paperwork. Shannon does her best to make Gene eat healthy by going organic. Doesn't help.

Wedding Boot Camp

Wow. That was riveting viewing. I'm not an expert on Marriage counciling and my only experience with it has been on a show here and and a show there. And usually those show were never in depth at all. They would just gloss over it and make it out to jokey, or a "fun" couple of exercises that never showed any consequences between the couple. But Wedding Boot Camp definitely was eye opening. Not just for me as a viewer, but for Gene and Shannon and every other couple in attendance. Imagine being put in a room with complete strangers and being told every sh*tty thing about your past and thrown right back in your face and all you can do is accept it and acknowledge that the things you did in the past were wrong and harmful. That's some sobering sh*t that will snap you back into reality.

Shannon said it best, "Gene his entire life has dealt only with 'Yes Men" and now he has to stand in the middle of a room full of people that hate him and call him out on his sh*t". I can respect anyone that can own up to their sh*t and get through an exercise like that. That takes some serious courage right there. Another exercise that was particularly brutal was the "I would never be your spouse because....." and the one dude (not Gene) stepped up to Shannon and finished that statement with, ".....because your a doormat". Ouch.

The Demon Says I Do?

I'm usually ambliviant about Wedding themed shows. They bore me to tears and I never get anything remotely entertaining out of them. But for this one, I guess I have more of a connection given the fact that I'm a huge KISS fan and have more or less followed the exploits of Gene for years. Hearing him talk negatively about marriage for so long, I just had to see if he would actually go throught with it. I knew he would, but I figured there would be that little moment of doubt that would give him pause.

To my amazement, he never wavered and was actually looking forward to it. I enjoyed the entire episode with everyone involved. Even the ceremony itself was pretty cool. As for the guest list, I was curious to see who would be in attendance. I expected Hugh Hefner to be there. He was. Duh. I knew Paul Stanley would be there. Groomsman. Duh. Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer also showed. But I was really curious if any past members of KISS were going to show up. While scanning the crowd for Peter Criss and Ace Frehley, who I knew would never be invited and would not be there in person, I found Bruce Kulick in a couple of shots. Cool they haven't completely forgotten about him. All in all a great episode for sure.

This is not about the show, but it is about Gene Simmons

Gene Simmons slams Madonna over Super Bowl halftime show

Quote
Just two days after it was confirmed that Madonna will take the center stage in the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show, reality star and fellow performer Gene Simmons has slammed the pop star's participation.

"I love all karaoke singers," a sarcastic Simmons said when a TMZ cameraman brought up the subject of the Super Bowl performance. "I like all the girl singers who get up and sing with tapes. Shame on you."

The KISS frontman then launched into a full rant against any artist who isn't the "real" deal.

"You've got to have some integrity," he said. "I don't care what your music is. Have some integrity -- be real or full disclosure before the fact. Hold up a sign saying, 'Seventy percent of what you hear is fake. It's a tape. I'm a karaoke singer.' Say it!'

After offering some half-hearted praise for the pop icon ("By the way, Madonna's terrific"), Simmons continued his rant, adding that she wasn't "appropriate" for the halftime show.

I completely agree with Mr. Simmons take on this. I have never thought lip syncing a live concert presentation as respectable. I had arguments at the other forum about this. If I'm paying good money to see you perform, don't give me some fake lip syncing.

Madonna is good performer. Let's hear your real voice. If you can't dance and sing at the same time, get off the stage.

Helloooooooo... P!nk... g'head... tell those losers how it's done.

I'm against paying to see an artist lip syncing, regardless of who they are. But this is the first that I'm hearing about Madonna being one of them that sings to tape. Granted I've never seen her perform live, but I always thought she was the real deal.
