Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time
Back In Black
at #26

Back In Black. What an amazing achievement by AC/DC to not only follow up the greatest Bon Scott era album in the form of Highway To Hell, but to throw down the gauntlet and exceed it and let everyone know that they were back and stronger than ever with new singer Brian Johnson. This is easily the best album with Brian and they have been trying to top it ever since, which is just impossible. Rolling Stone Magazine has this at #26. Sorry, but once again, they failed in their ranking. This is clearly Top 10 material IMO. With 49 Million units sold, this sits at #2 for most albums sold, right behind Michael Jackson's Thriller album. Back In Black is the highest selling album by any band and the highest selling hard rock album of all time.

This album is more or a less an unofficial Greatest Hits set with so many great tracks from Hells Bells to Shoot To Thrill to Let Me Put My Love Into You to Back In Black to You Shook Me All Night Long to Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution. There isn't one wasted second here. This is AC/DC lasting legacy and a fitting tribute to the late, great Bon Scott. Once again, Producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange works his magic and creates another masterpiece. There is a reason why I consider him to be one of the greatest producer of all time. He is right up there with George Martin IMO.

The first time I heard this album when it came out I was just absolutely floored by how f*cking good it was with a replacement singer. Honestly, I didn't think the album would be much at all. How do you follow up the best Bon Scott album with an unknown singer? The odds were stacked against them. But wow, they blew the doors down and are still thriving to this day.

Fave Songs: All of 'em. But MVP goes to....You Shook Me All Night Long

Album cover ftw!! Before there was Spinal Tap and Metallica, there was this....the original all black cover.  The band chose to go with all black as a sign of mourning for Bon. I will replace the back cover with the original vinyl version once I can find it online somewhere. (UPDATE: Look above)

For Those About to Rock. Oh f*ck me. Many AC/DC fans will go to the end of the earth saying this is the definitive AC/DC album and I really wouldn't even try to argue with that assessment at all because it's that damn good. You really can't lose with either Back In Black or For Those About to Rock. On the other end of the spectrum you will have fans saying it sucks. Whatever. Rolling Stone Magazine is a weird publication if you ask me. For their review, they said that this album is the best one ever for the band, yet it doesn't even rank in their Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time list. Go figure. Personally I would put FTATR in the Top 25. Once again Production falls into the mighty hands and ears of Robert John "Mutt" Lange. I highly recommend this album for anyone looking to get into the band. This was the only AC/DC album to go #1, until Black Ice came out in 2008.

The album opens up with one of the greatest openers ever with the title track in the form of For Those About to Rock (We Salute You) . I say that a lot, but this ranks right up there as one of the all time best. It's got cannons damn it!!!  Other great songs that need to be savored are Put The Finger On You, Get It Up, Breaking The Rules and Night Of The Long Knives.

Fave Songs: All of 'em. Co-MVP goes to....For Those About to Rock (We Salute You) and Night Of The Long Knives

Album cover is ok. I love the idea of the cannon, but I hate the rust color.

AC/DC (Flick Of The Switch) 1983
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_03halfstar.gif)

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/ACDC%20600x600/1983FlickOfTheSwitch-1.jpg) (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/ACDC%20600x600/1983FlickOfTheSwitchBack-1.jpg)

Flick Of The Switch would be the last album to feature long time Drummer Phil Rudd, who was fired midway through the recording of the album due to a falling out between him and Malcolm Young. It would be a long time before he would find his way back into the band, returning in 1994. Taking over on Drums would be Simon Wright.

This album for whatever reason is considered to be the ugly step child of the AC/DC catalog with fans. Yes, it failed miserably when it came to sales. But how can anyone expect them to equal that of what they did with the last 3 albums. What AC/DC did is nothing short of a miracle. They created 3 successive masterpieces in a row. Any band would be lucky to just get 1. So, with their track record, expectations were at an all time high to keep the streak going. They didn't. I don't have a problem with FOTS like a lot of people do. I guess the one knock against FOTS would be that there was no true, definitive anthem to be found on the album.

Fave Songs: Rising Power, Flick Of The Switch, Guns For Hire, Deep In The Hole and Bedlam In Belgium

Album cover gets the prize for being the most literal interpretation of an album's title. AC/DC. A switch. Angus' flicking it.

AC/DC (Fly On The Wall) 1985
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_04star.gif)

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/ACDC%20600x600/1985FlyOnTheWall-1-1.jpg) (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/ACDC%20600x600/1985FlyOnTheWallBack-1-1.jpg)

VHS Long-form Video Cover

Fly On The Wall did what Flick Of The Switch couldn't. It produced a handful of anthems that I still enjoy playing on a regular basis. This isn't a perfect record by any stretch, but it is definitely a good album full of classic AC/DC rockers. With Phil Rudd now out of the band, FOTW is the first album to feature Simon Wright on Drums and he does a fantastic job.

I think why I really liked the album, more so than I should is that the band released a Long-form video on VHS for 5 of the songs with a "narrative storyline" running throughout each individual video. The "plot" of the storyline is the photographer trying to take pictures of the band. You can see the videos down below, in order. I gotta point out that one of the best scenes ever in any music video, be it AC/DC or any other band occurs at the end of the Shake Your Foundation. In my best Jack Black impersonation: "The band Rocks so fuuuucking hard, it brings the building down to the ground". When the camera cranes up from the rubble to reveal AC/DC playing in front of the New York skyline, I was like FUUUUCK YEAH!!!! Chills. But now, that image takes on a completely different meaning with the Twin Towers in the background.

Fave Songs: Danger, Sink The Pink, Playing With Girls and Shake Your Foundation. Co-MVP goes to Foundation and Danger.

I've always liked the Album Cover, front and back. Sucks to be Cliff Williams, the bass player. He is like the one guy that is never heard or seen within the band and he has been in the band for pretty much the entire run of AC/DC. And he still doesn't get any respect...even on the back cover with the stupid f*cking green sticker over his face. Haha.

AC/DC (Who Made Who) 1986
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_05star.gif)

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/ACDC%20600x600/1986WhoMadeWho-1.jpg) (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/ACDC%20600x600/1986WhoMadeWhoBack-1.jpg)

Who Made Who is NOT a Greatest Hits set. It's the soundtrack to Stephen King's Maximum Overdrive. It's more of a compilation by Mr. King, a known AC/DC fan. who chose the songs that he felt suited the scenes best. Since it's not a GH set, I can't even go down the road of slamming it due to omissions of certain songs. And since I love every song that's on it, it gets the rating it does.

The biggest draw for me picking this up were the 3 new songs made specifically for this album. Those songs being the title track Who Made Who and the 2 instrumentals D.T. and Chase The Ace. The title track to me is the most "pop-centric" song that AC/DC has ever done and I am not ashamed to admit that I love it. D.T. and Chase The Ace are really cool songs. I never would have expected the band to do full on instrumentals and the end results don't suck either.

The rest of the album is comprised of one Bon Scott era song: Ride On. The remaining songs are from the Brian Johnson era. Mr. King was smart enough to include You Shook Me All Night Long. If he doesn't add that song, we never would have gotten the new video to go along with it.

Corinne Russell.  Gawd I loved this chick when the video first came out. Um, me love her long time.  Reminds me that I never added the video to the Hottest Music Videos Of All Time Thread. Must correct that little oversight right now.

Fave Songs (of the 3 new ones): Who Made Who, D.T. and Chase The Ace

Album cover is cool. But I gotta point out that Cliff Williams, the never-heard, never-seen band member of AC/DC is not doing himself any favors by covering up his face on the back cover with a face full of hair.  ;D

I will post the official video for Who Made Who when I can find it. Till then, just enjoy the song.  :)

AC/DC (Blow Up Your Video) 1988
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_02star.gif)

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/ACDC%20600x600/1988BlowUpYourVideo-1.jpg) (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/ACDC%20600x600/1988BlowUpYourVideoBack-1.jpg)

Blow Up Your Video would be the final album with Simon Wright on Drums. I'm guessing even he was disappointed with the end result and decided to leave. I dunno. This album is hovering around/below average. It's not the piece of **** that most fans like to say it is. But it really is a sub-par performance by the band as a whole. Most of the songs are pretty forgettable and uninspired. Even the "hits" are far from the best and pale in comparison to what a true AC/DC hit is. I'm one of the biggest fans of the band and will try in vein to make myself like something just out of loyalty. But this is a very trying album to do so with. And anyone that says this one is better than Fly On The Wall is delusional.

Fave Songs: Heatseeker. No MVP here.

Album Cover is pretty damn weak. It's clearly the work of someone that was trying out his brand spanking new edition of Photoshop and this was the result of using the program after 10 minutes.

AC/DC (The Razors Edge) 1990
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_04halfstar.gif)

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/ACDC%20600x600/1990TheRazorsEdge-1-1.jpg) (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/ACDC%20600x600/1990TheRazorsEdgeBack-1.jpg)

The Razors Edge would see Chris Slade join the band for this album only before the inevitable return of Phil Rudd on Drums. After Blow Up Your Video, I was pretty certain that this would be the beginning of the decline of AC/DC. My fears would be for nothing as the band came roaring back with an album full of hits like Thunderstruck, Moneytalks and Are You Ready. As good as those songs are, my favorites have always been Razors Edge and Shot Of Love. I have to say that I think the boys from down under are Charger fans to write what is unofficially the official Chargers song.  ;D  Every local sports talk show here in San Diego has been using that song to open up their show for years and for good reasons too.

Fave Songs: Thunderstruck, Moneytalks, The Razors Edge, Are You Ready, Shot Of Love and If You Dare.

AC/DC (Ballbreaker) 1995
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_03star.gif)

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/ACDC%20600x600/1995Ballbreaker-1.jpg) (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/ACDC%20600x600/1995BallbreakerBack-1.jpg)

Ballbreaker saw the return of Phil Rudd back on Drums. So you would think that this would a huge return, especially coming off the heels of The Razors Edge. Granted it had been 5 long years since their last release. But Ballbreaker is an average album at best. It's not one of their best, but certainly far from their worst. This is just an album that I very rarely play anymore due to lack of true AC/DC hits.

Fave Songs: Cover You In Oil and The Furor

Really not sure what to make of the Album Cover. Seriously, what the f*ck is it? Angus is standing on a ball that is part of what..........A gateway of some sort and it's electrified because it's AC/DC? I dunno. A little more work should go into designing the concept better IMO.

AC/DC (Stiff Upper Lip) 2000
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_03star.gif)

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/ACDC%20600x600/2000StiffUpperLip-1.jpg) (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/ACDC%20600x600/2000StiffUpperLipBack-1.jpg)

Stiff Upper Lip. This is on par with Ballbreaker IMO. There are a couple catchy songs and riffs. But the rest of the album sees them falling back into automatic pilot mode. For one, there's really only so much Angus can do with the same bag of riffs that he does have. Every once in awhile he pulls something out that's completely fresh, if not original. Another thing about Stiff Upper Lip is that Brian Johnson's voice is really starting to show it's wear and tear. Yes, I know what your thinking "Hey dude, his voice was like that from day 1". True. But he really is starting to crack here.

If there ever was a case to be made about how all AC/DC songs sound the same, this is the album that is guilty of that. I have to point out that Safe In New York City is hands down the worst song that AC/DC has ever recorded. Ugh.

Fave Songs: Satellite Blues, House Of Jazz and Can't Stand Still

I always thought that the Album Cover was somewhat interesting in making Angus a statue for all to worship, which back in the 70's-80's would have been a fitting tribute as he was worshiped by all. But now, it just reminds me of when Michael Jackson totally lost it and decided to turn himself into a statue so that he could worship himself, since no one else was doing so. Don't go down that path Angus! Come back!!!!

AC/DC (Black Ice) 2008

Black Ice. I haven't listened to this one since my original review. So I have had the luxury of distance between the two and I can say that this one is so much better than I remember it being. And finishing this one off as the final studio album for this marathon of mine, I can finally put it in context with their entire catalog. First off, this is the most "melodic", radio-friendly AC/DC album. By that I mean, Brian Johnson with his voice clearly gone on the last album and road wear of tours year in and year out, he is forced to sing more rather than relying solely on his patented growl approach. And this is a good thing. Also of note is that Angus really has expanded his playing and doesn't rely solely on his bag of riffs. It's still vintage stuff, but so much more.

The songwriting is also a bit broader which lends itself nicely to distinguishing itself from one song to the next. So there is no "it all sounds the same" card to play from fans and non fans alike. For an example of how different this one is, just one listen to Rock 'n' Roll Dream is all you need to hear to know that they made a conscious effort to do something different. It's a great f*cking song and so unlike anything Brian has sung before. Love it.
So, I can definitely say this is their best album since For Those About To Rock. The only song that really falls into the vintage AC/DC of their classic songs would be their first single for Rock N' Roll Train, which is a great track by the way. So, I have to give this one a higher rating this time around.

Fave Songs: Rock N' Roll Train, Skies On Fire, Big Jack, Anything Goes, She Likes Rock N' Roll, Money Made and Rock 'n' Roll Dream. MVP goes to....Anything Goes.

I actually like the Album cover as well as the alternate covers that each came with different designs and not just different colored logos.

AC/DC (Family Jewels) 2005

Family Jewels is a 2 Disc DVD set containing pretty much every single music video and TV appearance of importance in their career. The 3rd Disc containing a few TV appearance as well as the newer music videos picks up where the original set leaves off. The 3rd Disc can be found within the Backtracks box set, which I don't have. Disc 1 is the Bon Scott years and Disc 2 is the Brian Johnson years.

Overall, this is a fantastic set. This is the first time I have watched it since the day I picked it up 5 years ago. And I have a much better appreciation for this DVD set now, coming on the heels of my AC/DC Marathon. Sounds and looks great. Highly recommend this one.

Included with the DVD set is a 23 page booklet with a biography about the band, TV appearances and music videos.

I don't use iTunes, but I figure this is big news. Only a handful of artists are not on iTunes yet, I surmise?

AC/DC releases entire catalog on iTunes

Quote
NEW YORK (AP) — AC/DC is finally releasing its music digitally on iTunes.

Columbia Records and Apple announced Monday that the classic rock band's music will be available at the iTunes Store worldwide.

Sixteen studio albums will be released, including "High Voltage" and "Back in Black," which is already in the Top 30 on iTunes' top albums chart. Two of the group's albums are also in the Top 100 and several of the Australian band's songs are in the Top 200.

AC/DC was one of the few acts that would not release music through the digital outlet. Two years ago Apple struck a deal with The Beatles' record label, EMI Group, and management company, and began selling the group's music. Kid Rock, who had also been against selling his music through the digital retailer, is releasing a new album, "Rebel Soul," on Monday and it's available on iTunes.

Silvio Pietroluongo, Billboard's director of charts, said AC/DC's decision isn't shocking.

"It's something that I think artists realize they need to do in order to get their music into the hands of their fans and to make more money," he said. "Right now with CD sales being what they are, touring is the main source of income and not every band is equipped to be out on tour 200 days a year to make the kind of money the need to make, or want to make."

Garth Brooks, however, has yet to release his music on iTunes. Pietroluongo said he believes the country star will come around, but he's not sure when that will be.

Four of AC/DC's live albums and three compilation records are also available. The statement said the songs have been mastered for iTunes "with increased audio fidelity."

The group's first live album in 20 years, "Live at River Plate," is out Tuesday.

PS: waiting for my copy of Live. Hope it comes in soon.

AC/DC Confirm 'Rock or Bust' LP, Malcolm Young's Departure (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/ac-dc-confirm-rock-or-bust-lp-malcolm-youngs-departure-20140924)

We all knew that Malcolm has been sick for quite some time and had been "on a break" since April. But hearing the news being confirmed that he is now officially out of the band is shocking to me. Angus gets all the glory, but Malcolm's rhythm playing is the straw that stirs the pot. He will be missed and it's just going to feel so odd not seeing and hearing him play in AC/DC. He is being replaced by his nephew Stevie Young on the album as well as becoming a member of the touring band.

AC/DC’s Malcolm Young Reportedly Being Treated for Dementia

Quote
When AC/DC announced the release of their new album the other day, the good news was offset by some bad: Founding guitarist Malcolm Young was no longer in the band. Seeing that he wasn’t involved in the recording of the album due to an undisclosed illness at the time, the news wasn’t all that surprising.

According to news reports, Young is being treated for dementia in a Sydney nursing facility. The 61-year-old guitarist was moved into the full-time care facility after suffering a stroke last year.

A family friend told the Sydney Morning Herald, ”If you were in the room with [Malcolm Young] and walked out, then came back in one minute later, he wouldn’t remember who you are. He has a complete loss of short-term memory. His wife, Linda, has put him in full-time care.”

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, “Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. Memory loss is an example. Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia.” Earlier this year, country music legend Glen Campbell was forced to retire from touring, and was placed by his family into an Alzheimer’s care facility, as a result of his battle with the disease.

AC/DC announced their new album, ‘Rock or Bust,’ on Wednesday, the same day they released a statement about Young’s retirement from the band after 41 years. This will be the band’s first album without Young, and its first since ‘Black Ice’ debuted at No. 1 in 2008.

While the album isn’t due until Dec. 2, a minute-long sample of one of its songs, ‘Play Ball,’ has shown up in the trailer for MLB’s postseason play. The band plans to continue without Young. They’ll launch a tour in support of the new record next year with Malcolm’s nephew Stevie taking his place on record and onstage.

Charge dropped against AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd (http://www.cnn.com/2014/11/06/world/asia/acdc-phil-rudd-charge-dropped/)

Just heard about Phil being arrested on a Murder for Hire plot. It's the story that everyone is running with on the air right now. What I find ironic is that no one is reporting that those charges were dropped. Producers want to grab as many viewers as possible in spite of additional facts being out there that could derail their Nielsen numbers.

AC/DC’s Angus Young on Phil Rudd: ‘That Guy Needs to Sort Himself Out’ (http://loudwire.com/acdc-angus-young-phil-rudd-needs-to-sort-himself-out/)

Based on the tone of what Angus and Cliff said, I think it's safe to say that Phil's days with the band are numbered. It wouldn't be the first time he was kicked out of AC/DC.

Yeah, it just doesn't make sense to replace Brian. Yes, he may have some health issues with his hearing, but to replace him would be career suicide for a band already on its last legs. They are going on 40 years and to think they can replace him and suddenly "revive" their career beyond what it is now is just pin-in-the-sky wishful thinking.

Well, the first show in Lisbon was very interesting because Axl was basically singing exactly like Brian, which was a plus because it was doing the songs justice and it wasn't your typical Axl "voice". It was fun, but never would I choose him over Brian. You don't replace the perfect singer for the perfect band.
