Continuing onward with my Jodie Foster Marathon, I decided to hit up another movie of hers that's been on my radar for some time now. Everyone knows that I love my Heist Flicks and this ranks right up there with some of the best of all time. Before I go any further though, I have to point out that Foster has a very small role in this one, even though she has third billing. The movie centers around the cat and mouse game between Denzel Washington and Clive Owen. The movie literally opens up with Owen's character telling the viewer that what we are about to see is the greatest heist ever devised. Dem's pretty lofty words to live by.
So, does it live up to that statement? Uh huh....and then some. I really don't want to say too much here because if I mention anything about the ending, it will ruin it for you. But lets just say that when it plays out, you will quote Homer Simpson with a big, fat D'oh! Very clever indeed. Heist films are tricky to review because it's all about the set ups and the execution of the plan. So, I will shift the focus to Spike Lee. Love him or hate him, when he wants too, he can make some great movies and this is definitely up there with his personal best. There are some definitive style choices that scream Spike Lee, but it doesn't feel like any of his older type of movies. Both Denzel and Clive are great in this and even though Jodie was barely there, she too brought her A-game.
For me this is definitely one to add to my personal DVD library. But for the rest of you folks, if you are looking for a great thriller with excellent editing and pacing, this is definitely worth a Rent. One last thing, pay very close attention to the final scene. It's a call back to....ugh. I can't say it without ruining it!!!
