The premise of a "Dome" sounds hokey. But since this has Stephen King's name attached to it along with Brian K. Vaughan, I will tracking this. Gonna wait to see what more they reveal if I'm going to tune in though. They have to have more than an interesting 'hook'. Doesn't hurt that Natalie Martinez is also in this. Yummy.

More interesting hook? I thought that blurb was a joke... Like in fake.

This is going to to have multiple seasons? Is this from SyFy? C'mon, you're kidding right?

It was hyped during the Super Bowl, which itself was on CBS. So, it's definitely a CBS series.

When is this coming? The premise sounds interesting. It's just television versions of Kings work have been hit and miss.

Well, 13 episodes of Under the Dome Started. I was underwhelmed. I guess because I'm looking at this as 13 episodes. Holy crap.
While the pacing was pretty good, it's clear that 'drama' is going to be front and center. Maybe even push The Dome into the background?

I was intrigued by only two things. One is the dome itself. All the questions are there. The second is the mysterious character Barbie. Beyond that all the other characters seem to be cookie cutter. Psycho boyfriend, conniving politician, trustworthy sheriff and a whole slew of relationships bubbling with trouble.

Oh, and the onslaught of ads really gets under my skin. Good lord, they went crazy. I'm pretty sure there was about 30-38 minutes of actual show.

Oh, and Rachelle Lefevre as Julia Shumway is easy on the eyes.

Note: I just found out the studio is waiting to see how this does, in case they want to make this a series. Crap. It is that type of thinking that waters down a show. Remember LOST. I just wish they would do what the premium cables do. Know your agenda, write with a good pace and end and then just end it already.

Racelle Lefevre played my best friend's aunt on a TV show about ten years ago, so I'm always happy when I see her name pop up.

Anyway, I also wish more stations would do the BBC/Showtime/HBO-type model for seasons but you can't really do that with regular cable because it's so hard to get advertisers on board for that.  If they can figure out a way to compensate for that, we may get some sharper TV shows on more channels.  And I wouldn't be surprised if by now a TV show went down to 38 minutes for all the ads-- especially to pay for a TV show like that.

Seriously, the first station that figures out how to sell expensive air for limited shows and get a pattern of success-- they'll be WAY ahead of everyone else in the programming division.  But meanwhile HBO and now Netflix and Amazon and others are beating them to the punch and cable television continues to whither... what they gotta do is figure out not just how to compete with those services, but do what those services can't.  Gotta turn those weaknesses into strengths.

It’s a culture change. Until the old farts get out, the greed is tone downed, then you might have some new thinking. You have companies that have been performing their business for decades a certain way and just turn a blind eye to everything around them, especially their viewing audience.

The recording industry fought changing themselves forever, but finally caved and evolved. Those who didn’t are gone.

And it’s still evolving. 5 years from now, 2 years, next year, the consumption of the music and movies may be very different.

Several years ago, one of my supervisors in a general assembly, talking about the future made a statement similar to…. The work you’re doing today, you will not be doing 10 years from now. It will not exist, it will different, it will be new.

I thought advice was simple but powerful and true. It’s been true for me and everyone I know. I expect it will remain so for my future.

Change is inevitable.

Pilot
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_04star.gif)

I'm always a bit nervous going into a new show that A) is being handled by CBS and B) using property set up by Stephen King. There are so many things that can go wrong adapting something by Mr. King, namely 'watering it down' for broadcast TV. I don't have to know anything about the origins of Under The Dome to be able to see things that fall in line with that either. I'm actually okay with CBS 'testing' Season 1 as a stand alone 'mini series' to see if the public catches on. I prefer this anyway. I've lost count of how many times I've been burned by a Network that cancels a show due to a knee-jerk reaction to less than stellar ratings. Vegas anyone?

As for the Pilot, I was actually surprised that I like it as much as I did. It wasn't the best things I've ever seen, far from it. But they did enough right in the episode to immediately whet my appetite to make me want to come back and see more. Yes, I did groan when they introduced the Psycho Boyfriend which in itself has been a cliche for years. But they did offer up a nice twist at the end when the revealed the that the City Councilman is his father. But how far does the apple fall from the tree? We already know that he knew the Dome was coming.

The other thing that made me latch onto the show a bit quicker than normal are all the familiar faces and names of the actors on the show, each of them that I've already spent time with. Dean Norris (Breaking Bad), Jeff Fahey (LOST), Colin Ford (We Bought A Zoo), Natalie Martinez  (CSI: NY), Rachelle Lefevre (Swingtown, Veronica Mars) and Mike Vogel (Pan Am, Bates Motel). Besides the awesome cast of actors, the other thing it has going for it is the fact that I'm a huge fan of Jericho and this kinda feels like the direction it may eventually head toward. Not so much in it being a post-nuclear society, but just the feel and vibe. Anyway, I'm gonna be riding this out for the 13 episodes.

I was reading on a couple of posts, the network has deviated from the book with it's characters and plot.

I'm sure this is done all the time, but I do wonder why. There's a reason King's books are so successful. His writing. Why would they change that?

Do they think they can write better?

Note: A minor spoiler, but King has approved the alternate ending they came up with. Then again, I think King pretty much goes with anything.  :-\

Episode 2

I was completely underwhelmed. Not much happened and more of the same from the first episode. More crazy boyfriend. Big Jim is just revealing more of his dark side. Beyond that, this was a big yawn.

I couldn't agree more with Mac. This episode came off as a filler episode, which really doesn't bode well for the longevity of the series. If they are already going there, instead of using the momentum of the first episode, I fear that we may not even make it to the end of the season before it gets yanked. The Crazy Ex is just stupid. The actor playing him is beyond dumb. It's like he is doing a caricature of every portrayal he has ever seen. The thing that pushes it over the top is that it comes off as a bad SNL skit. Doesn't help that he looks like Adam Samburg on top of that. 2 1/2 Stars out of 5.

 :-\ Manhunt :-\

Wow, what a surprise... more ho-hum television. And this had so much potential. The house party could have been way more tense. It wanted to grab you, but just pussed out being flat. Very little it happening except people have dark sides to some degree and being revealed. Lesbian's daughter, bigoted townsfolk, chairman, drifter, etc.

But none of it, just none of it grabbed me. I can tell this would have made a better 2 hour movie, but instead, we have a long drawn out drama, that I'm already getting bored with.

After the second episode, I began to seriously question whether I should stick with the show and realize that I just don't see it going anywhere. The characters are in a dome and all they can do is walk in circles, kind of what the writing is. I may revisit this on DVD if the reviews are favorable, but as of right now, I think I'm done with the show. After reading your Episode 3 review, really no need for me to even try to attempt to watch it.

Good point.

I keep thinking I'm missing something with King's writing. His stories can't be this mediocre, can they?

I will give it maybe another shot, but only if I'm not doing something like scratching my ass.

I've given up on America's Got Talent too. Several shows in and I saw very little if any talent. With future shows relying on those that they did push through, I have little to drive me to watch it.  :-\

Well, isn't this just special. My fear has come true. No matter. I kinda quit watching, but now, I'm sure I won't try to catch up. The networks just don't know when to stop. Groan   >:(

Not really. If I don't see any improvement in the episodes that I missed, I can easily bail on it again.

It was a Summer series, so the gap between Season 1 and Season 2 isn't any longer than a typical Fall Show. Curious as to why the sudden interest. Didn't you bail on the show after the 2nd or 3rd episode?

Low low interest. I saw a Stephen King book ad the other day and I remembered Dome.

With all the odd start times of shows over the last couple of months, I was wondering about Domes success.
