Title: Looking for 8mm Camcorder That Actually Works
Post by: Chiprocks1 on March 15, 2013, 08:55:05 pm
Just as the title says. I'm in dire need of a 8mm Camcorder so that I can transfer tapes to DVD/Computer before the tapes rot completely. I have been watching, tracking, looking on eBay and about 99% of all the 8mm Camcorders are for 'Parts' only, i.e....don't work. I've bid on a couple of cameras that met the requirement I've stated, but I always get outbid by a huge margin. Huge because I think the winning bidders are overpaying.

Anyway, anyone here got one and know of someone that would be willing to Sell or Rent it out to me? If it's a Rent-only option, I would also be paying for Shipping as well.

Thanks.

I got nothing. It's been so long but did the 8mm have players? Do you need the camcorder, or just something to play to transfer?

Just need something to transfer. And yeah, I've looked into the players and everything about 8mm camcorders on eBay apply. Either they are broken or they are victims of price gouging.

I've only got a seldom-used D8... I don't know the brand off the top of my head but I have a PILE of unopened blank tapes.  I thought I was gonna tape SO much stuff since I always wanted a video camera and I wound up almost never using it.  And now it's a WAY out of date thing.  I think I still have tapes I need to port over but I'm kinda worried to look at 'em.

I'm still looking on eBay for a reasonably priced used 8mm camera that isn't broken and being sold for parts. It's kind of depressing that this is the lot I get to pick from. I need to find one ASAP so I can transfer because I worry that the longer I wait, the worst the tapes are going to be.

The constant flux of formats drives me nuts, you have to keep copying and re-coding every ten years or so or you risk losing stuff.  I can't TELL you the amount of tapes I didn't format to DVD when I had the chance (including some stuff on there like The Drew Carey Show that you can't get now) or un-finalized burned DVDs I can't access.

That's why I just want to be able to dump everything onto a Hard-drive so it will be easier to grab and burn later to the new flavor of the week format.

Same here, but then you have to keep backing up the hard drive, making sure you can always read the formats...  it's never ending.  I was just reading this thing about the Library of Alexandria and how they kept having to re-copy the scrolls by hand because the papyrus rots, and while drag and drop and burn and wait is much easier, the trade-off is you have to do it MUCH more often.

Have you thought about a pawn shop?

I have a couple of Pawn Shops just down the street that I always check in every once in a while. Nothing yet. It's usually DV and Digital Cameras that make their way into the store.

Good idea. I will have to see what those services offer as well.
