Colin Ferrell is no Arnold Schwarzenegger and Total Recall is no Total Recall (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/total-recall-(1990)/msg11659/#msg11659). See what I did there? This is not to imply that the remake is bad. In fact, it's much better than I expected. Granted, I went into this one with very low expectations and how could I not? I heard a lot of bad things about this one when it was still playing in the theater. So it really didn't have to work all that hard to impress me with some of the stuff up on the screen. Visually the movie is great, with a hint of Blade Runner (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/blade-runner-(1982)/msg5203/#msg5203) and some Minority Report (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/minority-report-(2002)/msg11589/#msg11589) thrown in for good measure. However, I do take exception with the Lens Flare overkill. It's like they purposely tried to outdo JJ Abrams on this. It was and is very distracting to say the least.

With that said, Sharon Stone is no Kate Beckinsale. In this one, they really went out of their way to flesh out the character that both played and made her a very integral part of the remake. Watching Kate do her thing in this one made me feel like I was watching Underworld (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/underworld-(2003)/msg13360/#msg13360). She moved, talked and blew sh*t up as if she were still channeling Selene. Now, who do we have to thank for this? Why her hubby of course. With Len Wiseman behind the camera, of course that aesthetic would be there. Not a bad thing either.

The skeleton of the original movie's plot is there, but there is enough divergence that the remake for a good chunk if it anyway, feels new and fresh. So, I don't agree with most people that sh*t on this one at all. I for one enjoyed the film and can easily recommend this as a Rent. Be on the look out for Bill Nighy who also appears in Underworld and of course there's Jessica Biel.
