Title: The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)

The 40-Year-Old Virgin

The 40-Year-Old Virgin to me is one of the funniest movies to come out in well over 15 years. I can't recall a movie that is funnier. The only other movie that even comes close to being a perfect comedy is Superbad ('s-blu-rays/superbad-(2007)/msg7138/#msg7138). As for Virgin, this is the crown jewel for Steve Carell and the one that he will always have to measure up to. This was the perfect storm. Great premise, great characters, the perfect actors to play their respective roles and a great script in the hands of Judd Apatow, who also directs.

The movie itself may be vulgar to most, but the underlying story itself is actually quite sweet and endearing and Carell does a fantastic job in making you believe that he really is a Virgin. Anyone else plays this part and I think it fails. Well, it just wouldn't be as funny as what the final product ended up being. You also have to give him props for co-writing the script. Most people just assume that Apatow wrote it all. They make a great pair and I would love to see them collaborate on a future project.

I highly recommend this as a Buy. One of the rare movies that actually delivers in tickling your funny bone with a great cast to boot that includes, Catherine Keener, Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Jane Lynch, Leslie Mann, Kat Dennings and my girlfriend Elizabeth Banks. If you're a fan of Apatow, you will also see some of the cast from Undeclared in smaller roles. If you are ever feeling down and need a pick-me-up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin is the movie to get.

Haven't seen this since it came out.  Though I did see it a number of times when it came out, I think this was right when I started working as a theater usher.  What I wound up doing, since I saw it before the "big" night, was to watch the audience at certain scenes, such as the waxing.  Seeing all those people react is a hell of a thing.

I have a tendency to do that now. If I've seen the movie enough to know it well, whenever I have people over for movie night, I usually just watch my friends who are watching whatever movie for the first time, just so that I can catch their reactions. Best example was watching my Grandma when she saw Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
