How do you top Back to the Future (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/back-to-the-future-(1985)/msg18396/#msg18396)? Ya can't. It's an impossible. Hell, even equaling the original film was next to impossible as well. But that's not to say that Back to the Future Part II doesn't have it's own moments. I find it kind of odd that the one thing I looked forward to the most while waiting four long years for the sequel to come out, turned out to be the least interesting part of the entire series for me. Sure, the future Hill Valley gave us the Hoverboards, Jaws 19 and a very young, babyfaced Elijah Wood. But in the scope of it all, the future isn't all that interesting. Yes, they had to go there to pick up the thread from the cliffhanger and set up the final 2/3 of Part II. There's just no getting around that.

I think the thing that I just never liked about Hill Valley's future was A) it was too clean. I'm not expecting Blade Runner (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/blade-runner-(1982)/msg5203/#msg5203) bleakness. But admit it, this future is a little kid friendly. Yeah, it's in keeping in line with the tone of the first film in that it is after all a family picture. So, it gets a pass there....barely. B) I can accept that Michael J. Fox has to play Marty Jr. because they have to both look exactly the same or there is absolutely no need for Doc Brown to bring Marty Sr. into the future to course correct the events that are to unfold. So, that too gets a pass from me. But what doesn't get a pass is Fox playing the daughter. It's this little moment that just makes me think I am watching The Nutty Professor.

As for the rest of the film, it gets an A-. I just like the story that unfolds with the alternate 1985 and all the stuff that Marty and Doc have to fix in order to reset the timeline. It bodes well that we basically get to see parts of the first film from a different perspective, which is really cool. This more than makes up for losing Crispen Glover and Claudia Wells. Kinda. Yes, it does suck that all we get of Crispin is stock footage from the first film for key scenes in the sequel. But in the overall scheme of the movie, he doesn't play a vital role. But Claudia Wells is a different story all together.

Everyone that knows me, knows I still have mad love for Elizabeth Shue (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/the-karate-kid-(1984)/msg18232/#msg18232). But even I can't really connect to her playing Jennifer Parker. It's not that she is bad in the part, it's just that I always have a negative reaction when another actor steps into the role of what is a very important part of the story. These are minor quibbles and really don't do too much damage to the series. It's just something that stands out for obvious reasons. I still highly recommend this as a Buy. Also, Part II did almost surpass Part I in one aspect. It gave us the 2nd greatest Cliffhanger of all time. I still to this day remember the collective groan from the audience in the theater when the title card comes up on screen....'to be continued...'. Nooooooooooooooooooo!!

The movie had really found its groove the last 30 minutes and was flying by pretty fast and then....BAM! Time for you folks to get out of the theater and come back 1 year from now. Argh!!! One cool thing that Part II does one up Part I was right after the title card, it kicks into the Trailer for Part III. People were whooping and hollering. We couldn't wait to see how it all ended. To this day, I have yet to see any other film show a trailer like that before the credits roll. Anyway, a pretty solid follow up to one of the greatest films ever.

I could have used a little more squallor in the future too, but they were pretty antsy about showing it in the first place.  If they had known they were going to do a sequel, they NEVER would have gone into the future.  They did all this research but knew they'd have a lot of it wrong, the only thing they committed to was the flying cars, they felt that they couldn't do the future without them.  Even if it wasn't realistic.

I think, though, that the reason the future is like it is is to give people something to look forward to.  I have no desire to live in Blade Runner world or any other dystopias I see in movies, but Back To The Future is different because it's characters we know in OUR present and they'll go into that future, so we don't want it to be too terrible.  It's like "how can you enjoy your life if you know you're going to hell when you die?"

Besides, we get our dystopia with 1985A.  I feel like the movie would have been too dark if we had TWO terrible worlds.  This way all three time zones are nice and different (and since 1985 Original is only pre-titles, it doesn't count as one of the "worlds" they go to).

While I'm curious about how the would have done the 60s or 70s, but I'm glad they didn't.  The 50's felt a little like home away from home, give Marty a little bit of familiarity.  Plus the best part is that the second movie ends with the same problem that Marty had in the FIRST movie (being stuck in the 50s) WITHOUT the exit that he used last time.  He's screwed.  He very well could have been stuck in the 50s forever.

I will admit that MJF as his own daughter is weird, but without it... I feel like something would have been off with only two Martys in that dinner scene.  It's the rule of three.

Elizabeth Shue I like as well, but she's really not much of a character, she isn't very active, she's reacting to some stuff part of the time but she's in and out.  Which I get, it would have been weird having her hang out with Marty for two whole films, but Doc should have found SOMETHING for her to do in 2015 besides leaving her in an alley.

That's the very reason why I give the 'clean' future a pass because of the dark turn in the Alternate 1985. As you said, it would have been a very dark film and this isn't what the first film was about. It would have been waaaaaaaay to drastic of a change in that regard.

To be fair, it wasn't really a "clean" future.  It was garish, thumb thieves ran rampant, there was traffic everywhere- even in the sky, you were assaulted with loud media (TV billboards, loud music, holograms), the justice system was pretty warped, the alleyway was full of trash, inflation was out of control, there was an oppressive amount of technology everywhere, even in the house, there were a fair amount of police in that one little town block, it never really felt like a warm and cushy future to me.  It wasn't the New Brutalism of Super Mario Bros or anything like that, but it didn't really seem ideal under the glossy finish.

Crispin Glover Wasn’t In Back To The Future II Because He Didn’t Like Its Capitalist Message (http://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/scifi/crispin-glover-future-ii-capitalist-message.html)

I still think that there is more to the story than what we have gotten in the last 20 years.

Tony Hawk Rides a Back to the Future Hoverboard

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_IudE9aPgg

A good viral video with the likes of Christopher Lloyd, Tony Hawk, Moby, Terrel Owens and more. But I'm still not giving up hope that we will see a real, functioning hoverboard in my life time. If it takes till I'm 99 years old for it to happen, so be it. You can bet your sweet ass I will get one and ride it....walker and all!

I didn't really dig it that much, it was just a repeat of what we already loved... there was no real attempt to explain how it was real, or to make the boards look more plausible or anything like that ("each microrepulsor array has it's own gyroscope and emergency power source, we're using the same battery technology used in the Tesla to power this thing, it's high capacity and can run for about eighteen hours straight before a recharge.  Everything is regulated through the computer unit at the back..." etc etc).

What did ‘Back to the Future II’ get right about 2015? (http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/12/what-did-back-to-the-future-ii-get-right-about-2015/)

Great read.

It was a good read.  You know, I was commenting the other day that I've been waiting for 2015 since I was a kid, my most immediate vision of the future was 2015, accurate or not.  2016 is just gonna be weird.  A strange, new world.

What 'Back to the Future' got right, wrong about 2015

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8_83JIq_uM

I think we will be seeing a lot of these fun Back to the Future Part II references throughout the year. A lot of bloggers have already started doing their own commentary on BTTF and 2015 as well as News Outlets like CNN. Yesterday, ABC News had their own segment on it as well. More is definitely to come for sure....In the ABC News segment, they mentioned that Nike is in fact pushing to get some form of their Lace-Up shoes on the market sometime this year. Remains to be seen if they can actually pull that off in time. At least that's how I heard it anyway.

I'm really curious to know if these will be Limited Edition shoes or mass-produced shoes. This will dictate how much I'm willing to spend on them and I'm dead serious when I say that I plan on getting a pair for myself. If they are mass-produced, I'm expecting a sminimum ticker price of at least $200. It wouldn't shock me one bit if idouble. You gotta remember that Air Jordan's when they came out were pricey as hell. If they are Limited Edition BTTF shoes, I would expect them to fetch in the neighborhood of $10K, if not more. I'd go as high as $1000 for a pair.

How are you supposed to put that in your pocket?

Seems to me that the Hoverboard or Gray's Sports Almanac would be a more reasonable cover design

This would of course have to come out two days after I decide to start getting rid of my big books.  A look at all the merchandise and cool stuff associated with BTTF.  I'm anxious to see it, while I still have some of the comics and the cartoon series, I missed most of the phenomenon as a result of being too young and out of the country.

It's actually got me thirsting for more original BTTF content now... a new novel or something.

Welcome, 'Back to the Future' Day (http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/20/entertainment/back-to-the-future-day-feat/)

I've been waiting for this day to arrive for a long time. It's here and I can't believe it. This is nutty to think that I saw BTTF2 when the movie came out and looked to the future of Oct, 21, 2015 as being so far away.....and here we are. Yikes.
