Thank God for Dave Grohl and thank God for Sound City! The film is a music lovers wet dream and a love letter to not only the studio itself, but to the music that gave it life as well as the soundtrack to our own lives. This is how you do a Rock Documentary. The story itself is pretty amazing with the history invested in a "sh*tty recording studio" that turned out some of the best music anyone has ever heard of or will ever hear again. To say that Sound City Studio is a priceless and irreplaceable monument to music is an understatement. I didn't realize just how profound the studio was with all that talent that produce hit song after hit song.
My interest in the film was brought to light when I first saw the trailer and figured in the hands of Dave, he was going to give us something special. But I was and still am blown away by how f*cking good this movie turned out. And what's even more amazing is how the 5.1 track sounds on my home theater setup. It's phenomenal. Just listening to the different tracks that highlight certain artists, bands and era's gave me hair raising goosebumps for the entire length of the movie. It's THAT good. The great thing about the film is that it's both touching (I did get misty eyed when they closed down the studio and those that worked there were reflecting on losing what was their family. There home away from home)., and also a very inspiring film that makes me want to pick up a guitar and start writing and recording songs. That's a pretty great thing to get from any movie.
This is a no-brainer and definitely a movie that will find it's way into my personal DVD library. Definitely a Buy. Not only that, but the album that was created in Dave's new studio is also a must. I've only heard a few selected songs, but it too is going to find a home in my Music Library as well. Love the parade of superstar rockers that contributed to the making of the film. With everyone from Fleetwood Mac to Cheap Trick to Rick Springfield to Paul McCartney to Tom Petty and more, there is absolutely no reason to check this out.
