Colin Mochrie Shares the Scoop on The CW's Upcoming Summer Revival!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59Zp2A4-_9Q

Awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome! Just one thing I'm gonna have to deal with and that's Aisha Tyler as the new host. I hope she can make me a fan once and for all as I really don't want to see this show fizzle and end up going off the air anytime soon. I loved the original US run of the series. Will air on The CW beginning on July 16, 2013.

You really plan on reviewing episodes?

Just put

Season 10, Episode 1: Ha ha ha

Season 10, Episode 2: Ha Ha Ha

Season 10, Episode 3: ditto

Season 10, Episode 2: Ha Ha Hał

No, I don't intend to review an Improv show and each episode. But I will definitely comment on a skit or joke that I find particularly funny. With Ryan and Colin, that is a given. They are best when riffing off one another. No other match in the history of the show has generated better and more consistent laughs for me.

Couldn't agree more. These guys are genius. I'm just not saying that. I think this kind of good consistent humor is hard to come by. (Robin Williams, Jonathan Winters)

Please put out a reminder. I never watch the CW

Fo sho, homey!

I'm actually glad its on CW instead of ABC. I fear that it would get yanked almost immediately going back to the Big 3 Networks. On CW, there won't be an emphasis on boffo numbers, especially since it will run during the Summer time.

I do hope they release this on DVD.

As for episode reviews, don't do it, but when I would watch the show and tape it (I still have almost ALL the episodes), I had fun just coming up with episode titles so I know what the heck the episode is, usually they'd be named for a guest star ("David Hasslehoff," "Robin Williams"), a running joke ("Meow!," "Drop The Chalupa!" and "Son Of Drop The Chalupa!") or just the funniest part of the episode ("Colin Touches Everyone's Genitals," "Wet Biscuit McGlee").  It's one of those things I miss about taping stuff.  In the 21st Century, it seems insane NOT to have episode titles.

I second the idea of them releasing the series on DVD. I too have a sh*tload of the episodes on VHS Tape and it's suffering from serious deterioration. It's a joke that we've only gotten the first season on DVD after all this time.

See, I was smart enough to back the VHS on digital format.  I sadly didn't do the same with my Drew Carey Show VHS tapes, I don't think we'll ever get the rest of those seasons on DVD because of all the music.  It's crazy you can't find that considering it was on TV ALL THE TIME less than ten years ago.

On that note, ever since I got into Boston Legal, I wanted to see The Practice but it's not on DVD either.

Whose Line Is It Anyway - 2013 - 90210 Forever (CW Preview)

I wonder if Greg Proops and Brad Sherwood will be returning. You can pretty much count out Chip Esten returning now that he has a big, fat role on Nashville. Nice to see that Laura Hall will be coming back. That was one of the first things that popped into my head when I heard about the show being resurrected for Season 10.

Dig the new set-- it looks like it might be smaller than the last set.  Or maybe everything's just bigger.

This sh*t better come out on DVD cause I don't want to watch with a solid CW logo in the corner.

I love that explanation.  No, I just... I'm such a snob now, I don't like bugs or commercials or anything anymore, I'm too old for that nonsense.  It's bad enough I have an ABC Family logo in the old set of eps.

BTW, this is the only way I'd ever have known that 90210 ended.

Well, 90210 is a big name show and if it took 'em five years to show the last episode (and presumably the DVD set didn't come out in that time), what's to stop them from not showing eps of Whose Line, drawing one season out over two or three years, doing that terrible cutting of the "bad" material into new episodes like ABC Family tried to pass off, or just never coming out with a DVD set at all?
Title: Re: Whose Line is it Anyway? (Season 10 - 2013)
Post by: Chiprocks1 on June 20, 2013, 12:47:29 pm
90210 just never lived up to the hype or the legacy of the original series. I was and still am a big fan of Beverly Hills: 90210 and unfairly compared the two against each other. Even if 90210 was half as good, it still sucked. I didn't like that they got rid of some of the returning players from the original either. Sure, I get that the new cast wanted to sink or swim on their own and not rely on the older characters to carry the show. It just never got any better than an average series and most of the time, the episodes were below average. The only reason why I stuck it out with such an inferior show was A) there wasn't anything else on and B) I kept waiting for the cream to rise to the top.

FYI, I was being sarcastic about the show taken so long to end. What I was trying to get across is that the show was DOA to me, right out of the gate as I knew it wouldn't live up to the legacy. I'm pretty sure all the Seasons have been released on DVD.

I dunno!  I hope not!

I think it comes down to scheduling, CW is in the hour-long business so what could they possibly program after it?  Seems like an hour-long block of Whose Line (which audiences would pretty much expect given that's how it was always shown on ABC Fam) would be a natural.  But I don't know for certain.

But I do think I have titles for the first two episodes:

Wow, those could be deal breakers for me.

That was extremely frustrating with the commercials. And I don't even understand the hashtags.
The special guests are fine, but dayum.... 3 times
and they repeated skits... already in two episodes?

Bottom line, those commercials could prevent me from staying on board with this.

See, I wasn't sure if it was just me because I'm not used to commercial breaks anymore, but yeah, that was pretty rough.  And Aisha Tyler's still a little too keen to please, Drew Carey had a little more don't care attitude to it.

I like Drew Carrey for the most part, but thought he was pretty useless as the MC for this show. He definitely was not good at the improv when he got involved.

Concerning the commercials, does anyone know if there is a blog or website people could vent their frustrations that they might look at this?

I know it's not going to change their policy.... immediately, but it does need to be known.

Now... I feel old. Went to the CW site and I guess it's their 'social' sites with twitter and Facebook. I can't get into Facebook because I don't do it. twitter was, uh, extremely uninteresting. People making mindless statements about anything but the show.

I did a Google search on reviews and they were all positive... but I'm pretty sure they were from professional critics that watched them sans commercials.

The fact that Drew Carey was garbage at improv for the most part was part of the fun, I mean, the BEST ones were the ones where the performers couldn't keep it in or kept screwing up.

I had both Episode 1 and 2 on DVR, but I've been busy working out of my office all week and just haven't found the time to kick back in the living room and watch them. I knew that I would be able to watch the episodes eventually on CW via Roku. So, did just that right now. The first episode was just okay for me. But it was the second episode that just knocked it out of the park for me. So damn funny and so goooooood. Kevin McHale was fantastic in all 3 of his skits. Wayne Brady rocked it during his improv Gospel song and Kevin did the same as well. I thought the competing singers skit was just as good if not better. The Magic Mat skit was hilarious.

Tyler was okay and wasn't annoying as I feared she might be. She is still trying to find her footing somewhat. I do miss Drew Carey though. I am hoping for a surprise cameo in a future episode, but that probably won't happen since he is employed by CBS now.

Well, watching it via Roku saved me the trouble of dealing with any commercials as this was "commercial free" for me. I think I will forgo watching it live and just watch it via Roku instead. Only downside is that CW doesn't air the newer episodes until 8 days later, which I'm okay with as its commercial free. Viva le Roku!

Candice Accola (The Vampire Diaries) was great during Song Styles. Most people would just stand there and do nothing. But she's got moves. As great as she was, it was Colin's f*ck-up that stole the show. Sock Puppet obviously gets the win here. Keegan-Michael Key was also good as well.

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Smilies/0%20All%20Smilies/lol.gif)@'Pasta and Coffee. The entire Helping Hands skit was great. I think I pulled a hernia laughing so hard at this.

That was about the only thing that made me laugh in the episode though. I did like the Sideway Scenes, but it's going to be very limited in what they are going to be able to do without doing the same thing over and over which they already are doing now. Still funny though, especially watching Colin "walking" into the room. As for the Special Guest of the night, Kyle Richers (The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills), other than her awesome split, she really didn't bring anything at all.

I was surprise to see last nights two episodes already up on Roku. The CW has made an error in posing so early or they have changed their policy and have decided to put new episodes up less than 24 hours after its broadcast airing. Here's hoping this is now the new norm so that I don't have to wait 8 days after the fact,

I just now got around to watching Episode 5 and it was a disaster. It was the kind of episode where if they couldn't save it at the end, all of it would have just been discarded. Ironically enough, the best thing to come out of the entire episode was in fact called "Disaster" during the Sideways Scene which NEEDS to be seen to get the point across. It. Was. AWESOME!!! Props to Colin and Wayne for pulling this one out of their asses.

As for the Synchronize Swim Chicks, a very odd choice as Guest Stars and it was their lack of improvisation skills that made this one both very hard to watch and yet extremely amusing as even Colin and Ryan were unsure what was happening. But they somehow were able to get laughs out of the scenes anyway.

A good episode with a guest star I have no clue about other than mentioning that Wilson Bethel is on Hart Of Dixie. Anyway, he did a great job and really got into it rather than just being passive and standing there. Best skits of the night were Song Styles, 3-Headed Singer (which I haven't seen in a long time) and Helping Hands. I do think that Sideways Scene has run its course. They are running out of ideas, i.e. going back to the same well over and over.

There just only so much they can do with the same gag. Each week it's a variation on "now your in the movie The Exorcist". "Now your in a Supernatural film", etc....

See what I mean?

This is why you need writers... even though it's a sketch show, they need clever people to come up with the premises for the performers to play off of.  I feel like they skrimped on that this year.

Gah... Good point. I could easily see them missing what made the show great before. Hey, we have the talent on stage... They'll make it work. We don't need ideas from the back do we. Is that how the past episodes did it?

What's ironic is that the 'Helping Hands' skit uses basically the same props and set up, but it boils down to what the content will be and each time they do it, it seems to use the same set up and beats. Yet, it seems fresh every time they do it. I never once will question why they keep 'going back to the well' as I am with Sideways Scene. I still think some of the things they do within the set up is funny. But with Aisha barking out different versions of the same thing is becoming to noticeable to ignore now. Not blaming her as she is only reading from the cards. If I hear later on that she is in fact helping with the writing, then yeah, she will be partly to blame. But as of now, she gets a pass because I think they get their ideas from the audience members before the show starts taping. Usually they give those waiting in line to get inside the studios cards to fill out pertaining to the show as a way to kill time to make the wait time a lot less painful.

Some of the shows that I've seen live did things that were similar, but with questionnaires. Anything to take our minds off the idea that we were standing around all day long, waiting to get in.

Wow, it literally took 7 episodes before they finally busted out one of my favorite skits they use on the show and that's News Flash where they have Colin standing in front of a Green Screen and he has to guess what's being projected behind him. In this case it was Dental work and it was BRUTAL. Talk about everyone getting super queasy which made it all the more better.

But the winner of the night goes to Wayne for his Song Style as Justin Timberlake as he sang to Lisa Leslie. It was AWESOME, especially when Lisa broke the rules of the game by questioning one of his lyrics. You HAVE to see what he does to get it all back on track. Brilliant.

Episode 8 is quite possibly the worst episode ever in its entire series history. That was bad all around. Even 'Helping Hands" more or less sucked by having Keegan picking up props, handing them to Colin as well as talking waaaaaay too much to the point of stepping on Ryan's lines. Well, lines that he tried to get out of his mouth. Sideway Scene was another bust. It was so bad that it barely even made it to the 1 minute mark before they buzzed out the skit all together. Sure enough, after the opening 'Prison escape' in the scene, Aisha calls out "okay, you guys are in a horror scene". Really? Are you STILL going to go there? F*ck!

What's in the bag was also another failure. Everything about this episode was a train wreck and I barely **** a smile during the 30 minute episode. If the rest of the episodes are like this, I will be calling it quits. I have another episode to watch, but after this latest episode, I am in no hurry to watch the next one. Sigh.

The fact that I don't feel like I'm missing anything by not seeing this show is a REAL f'ing shame.  I guess the original was lightning in a bottle 9granted, a bottle that lasted a LONG time) but they've been trying and trying to bring it back in various guises over the years and it doesn't sound like it's working.

Well, there are only so many ways to riff on the same idea before one begins to swipe from previous episodes. I also think that Aisha is part of the problem as well. I wasn't a Drew Carey fan by any stretch, but he did bring something to the table that she has not be able to do thus far. Also, they need to bring back past players like Greg Proops, Brad Sherwood and Chip Esten. I get why Esten would be a no show, but what the f*ck are Proops and Sherwood doing that is so damn important that they can't stop by?

Episode 9 is probably my favorite episode so far this season and worlds better than last weeks.......weak offering. I'm kinda shocked that it has taken 9 episodes to finally get to one of my favorite bits and that's Greatest Hits. Both songs were awesome. Props to Wayne Brady and Jeff Davis. But it's the set up by Ryan and Colin that made it work.

The other truly funny skit of the night was Helping Hands with Laila Ali. Veeeeeeeeeeeery funny. I was laughing so hard, tears were rolling down my face. Thank you for a great episode. I was really concerned for the series based on the previous episode.

F'in FINALLY.  How few episodes of the old series didn't have Greatest Hits?  That was, like, the go-to guaranteed crowd pleaser of the series.  Can't wait to see it.

Whose Line is is Anyways? Stephen Colbert

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMnGG2CnefU

While watching a mini Stephen Colbert marathon last night on YouTube, came across this which I had never seen before. I didn't even know he had been on the show. It's pretty good. I got a few good laughs out of it.

You never saw that before?  Wow.

Colbert as an actor popped up quite a few places in the 90s, the Dana Carvey Show, Spin City...

Okay, you seriously need to watch The Dana Carvey Show, it had Dana, obviously, but Steve Carrell was in it with Stephen Colbert,  Elon Gold, Robert Smigel (Triumph), and the writers included Charlie Kaufman, Louis C.K. (who DOES appear in a couple eps), Jon Glaser, Dino Stamatopoulos, Spike Feresten, and Robert Carlock.

Six eps on Crackle.  I wanted to post the old racists sketch from Episode 6 because it's priceless but I couldn't find it on its' own.

I love Maggie Q in pretty much everything she has done, especially Nikita and I was very much looking forward to seeing what she could bring to the world of Who's Line Is It Anyway. Um....this was not good. She was way out of her element and I feel that she really didn't understand the rules of what is expected of her. It's really simple, Colin supplies the voice and she has to move her mouth to match his at best as she can. Well, she wasn't doing any of that. More mime than anything else. But this did provide Ryan a great line by telling her "it's like your talking to me telepathically as if I'm reading your mind". This did get a good laugh. But I felt bad that Maggie wasn't so much in the skit as it was happening. She was happy to be there though. As for the rest of the show....meh. Helping Hands was okay.

And Maggie Q was in a bunch of the promos (at least the ones I saw) leading up to the new series.  How much of a letdown would you say this season is on the whole?  And could it be saved?

Based on my own self-impose hype of wanting it to be just like the good old days.....a major letdown. Big time. A couple of solid episodes, but the rest of either been hit or miss or just flat out sucked donkey balls.

A few weeks behind on the show. So, just watched the episode with the two football chicks from the Lingerie League. They of course look amazing. Yowza! But beyond them looking incredibly hot, the episode itself was horrible. Everyone was particularly bad. The two chicks were really bad. Bad as in watching a train wreck in slow motion. Ugh. I think there is just one episode left for me to watch, but even if it turns out to be the greatest episode ever, as a whole, this season sucked enough that I think they need to retire the show once and for all. The only way I can see getting excited for the show again would be to bring back some of the former players from its best years.

No. That's the problem. I cherry pick clips and skits from those golden years and it just makes this season look incredibly weak. Maybe if I wasn't watching clips, it would make this season....."better".

From what I've seen from the new season, any full ep of the old series would rock.  I still think that they're just taking a half hour and expecting it to be good instead of doing two forty-five minute sessions and trimming 'em down (the LAST "season" was made of the leftovers from those tapings and they're pretty lousy).

I wonder if part of the stagnation also has to do with a smaller common pool of knowledge to draw upon... the old series had a bunch of mainstays they went to (Star Wars, Titanic, the horrible 2000 election kerfuffle), but not as much as The Exorcist, there's just-- what can we assume the cast is saavy enough to know enough about to play off of?  I mean, you can probably take any big name movie and turn it into a game (Colin as the girl in the Hunger Games, the Avengers rap, number of words Game Of Thrones, and so on and so on)
Title: Re: Whose Line is it Anyway? (Season 10 - 2013)

Well that's kind of the problem with this season. There is a ton of sh*t that is tailor-made to mock and make fun of, but they keep going back to the same damn thing. For most of the season there has been this over reliance of using the Exorcist as their crutch and ironically enough, there was a running Star Wars gag throughout the entire episode (the one with the two football chicks). If their excuse as to why they aren't using current media to broaden their knowledge (bag of tricks), then they should turn in their Stand-Up Comedy Badge if they are not willing to prep and do the work. A comedian, even one that ad-lib's and does improv comedy, has to be aware of what's hot and new and current. That's what comedy is all about. I guarantee you that if Don Rickles was a guest on the show, he would absolutely be able to use current stuff and make it work.

My All-Star cast on Whose Line Is It Anyways would be Don Rickles, Richard Pryor, George Carlin and Sam Kinison. Now THAT would be awesome to see these cats riffing off one another on the same stage together with the same games that this season is failing at, I'd pay 1k for one ticket to see it live. Too bad 3/4 of that lineup is gone.

Wouldn't work.  As Mel Brooks said once, "there's no room for genius in ensemble."  Maybe if you had one per episode, but all four?  I dunno.  Besides, how good were their improv skills, outside of Rickles?
Title: Re: Whose Line is it Anyway? (Season 10 - 2013)

Of course it would work. The only way it wouldn't work is if they let their ego's get in the way to the point where it was all "me, me, me". I use to do Improv with my friends and it's pretty damn liberating to work as a team and help your fellow players all with the goal of moving the scene along. Now as I said before, if their ego's weren't in check, then yeah, it wouldn't work. But I don't know if anyone of them were selfish people and that they wouldn't work well as teammates. I'd like to think that with them being comedians, they would in fact try to help one another, especially in their prime years. Yes, I'm very aware that comedians in general are very cutthroat and will stop at nothing to one up their competition, no matter what the cost was.

I just watched the last episode of the season with Shawn Johnson. I like her as an athlete and her interviews, but going into this episode, I knew that she wouldn't bring anything to the table and THIS is what's inherently wrong with Season 10. Bringing on 'name' celebs for the sole purpose of filling in a seat shows that the show-runner doesn't know what they are doing. If you're going to bring on celebs, at least bring on people that have a background in improv or acting in general. Sticking in athletes or whoever, with no training is just....cringe inducing. If they don't care about anyone having improv skills or training, then at least go back to using people from the audience. At least then I wouldn't expect them to contribute in a meaningful way.

With that said, this episode was funny for the most part, but that's because Wayne saved it BIG time. He owned Song Styles as he always does. But his turns in the other skits were just as funny. Hell man, even Sideways Scenes was funny and not once did they rely on 'Horror' to get them through it either.

I was trying to find the one from the Colin and Brad two-man show because it's ridiculously funny-- they double the number of traps and have another set hanging off wires so they can walk into them.

GSN put up 40 episodes of Impro-A_Ganza (I think that's all there are) on Youtube and it's pretty funny.  Though a bit different from Whose Line.
