Anyone that knows me knows that I'm a music fan through and through. But that doesn't necessarily mean that I will just automatically digest everything with a beat and I do have a tendency to be overly-critical of anything that is 'accepted' by the public at large and Dreamgirls is one of the movies that just seemed to take on a life of its own. This wasn't really a movie that appealed to me when it first came out. Sure, I'd seen some scenes when the nominations came out for the Oscars, but that was about it. I only decided to check this out because of Eddie Murphy. I wanted to see if his Best Supporting Actor nomination was justified. I thought he did a fantastic job.

The biggest revelation of course was Jennifer Hudson. It's mind boggling to see anyone command that kind of attention with a performance that was truly worthy of her win for Best Actress. What's even more stunning is that I couldn't stand her as a person prior to this film, back during her days on American Idol. The entire time I was watching the movie, I kept saying to myself "this is the same girl that I cheered when she was booted off the show". I just didn't like her attitude back then. She had only made it to the middle of the pack and she was already acting like a Diva.

So, I think it says something about her performance here that I can admit that she did the role justice. As for the rest of the movie, they did get most of it right. Beyonce was great. I did however expect a little bit more from the movie. Musicals in general have a thin line to walk on and if they miss a step, it can bring the movie down for me a great deal. The movie isn't perfect and I'm really not a fan of certain types of musicals, ones that basically 'sing' the dialogue that can be spoken. Other than this little hiccup it fell victim to, it did a great job. Worth a Rent.
