Title: Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee w/ Jerry Seinfeld
Post by: Neumatic on July 05, 2013, 06:52:47 pm
I've known about this series for a while (it's something of an unintentional adaptation of Robert Llewellyn's "Carpool" (http://"http://llewblog.squarespace.com/carpool/")) but I showed my mom the Michael Richards episode, and she commented on wanting to see the others, so on my own I decided to watch some more.

The show has it's own website, (http://"http://www.comediansincarsgettingcoffee.com") a Youtube channel (http://"http://www.youtube.com/show/comediansincarsgettingcoffee"), and if you've got the IPTV option, it's on Crackle.

I suggest starting with the Michael Richards episode (enclosed below), but the newest one has Don Rickles.  There's a nice mellowness to the show (that Carpool had in spades) so if you can watch it on TV you can kill a couple hours easy.

Yep. You need to get Plex if you want it though. The quality of the channel is pretty sick to when comparing it to say YouTube which doesn't appeal to me as much because the quality is meh.

I still haven't figured out Plex.  I'm not big on Crackle's interface (or the bug on the video, you know how I feel about bugs), they only have a couple episodes of a series, the quality isn't that hot (sub-DVD, since they probably still wanna push those DVD sales), and sometimes after a commercial break the episode won't restart.  Thankfully CiCGC doesn't have breaks.

Whenever I get a few minutes to spare, but not enough for a regular TV series, I like to pop on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. I'm kind of just picking random episodes and decided that I would go backwards in the last few episodes I've watched. Checked out Chris Rock and Seth Myers a few days ago and both were great. Just watched Don Rickles episode just now and he never fails to make me laugh. I love listening to him talk, be it on Coffee or talk shows, he is always great.

I think I will start from the beginning and give proper episode reviews. Hey, it may not be necessary, but it's what I do to kill time. Sue me!

I feel like episode reviews are a waste of time since these aren't really pieces of art, they're moments, they're discussions.  What's to be gained from taking them apart?  I suppose you COULD distill the key information, but I feel like without context, you'd be missing something.

If you want more content, I suggest the British version, Carpool (http://llewblog.squarespace.com/carpool/).  They're longer and you might not recognize every one, but it's a good mellow watch (I quite like the one with Patrick Stewart).

Larry Eats a Pancake

Starting with Season 1, episode 1 again with Larry David. I always get a kick out of anything he is in. Even his interviewees are funny in spite of it being 'about nothing'. His Cigar/Cigarette analogy is spot-on if you think about it. I've watched this particular episode a few times since it originally aired. Watching him and Jerry talking, it's kind of amazing they ever got any work done on Seinfeld. I can imagine them talking for hours and hours....about nothing and having a blast do just that.

Mad Man In A Death Machine

I wonder what the typical shooting length is for each given episode. Barring natural disasters and traffic jams that it wouldn't go over a days shoot. So, how to explain why Ricky Gervais episode is so damn short? Even their 'coffee' diner scene was relatively short by comparison. It is funny seeing Ricky terrified by Jerry's over enthusiastic driving.

A Monkey and a Lava Lamp

I'm not really all that familiar with Brian Regan as a comedian or an actor. Never seen him on anything that I can recall. Maybe I have, I just don't recognize the dude. With that said, he does seem like a funny guy and a fun person to joke around with. I liked the episode. But my two favorite moments had nothing to do with him. The first was when Jerry couldn't get his car to start. The second was when the old lady (who probably doesn't even know who Jerry is) walks by his booth and just blurts out to him "pink looks good on you". As Jerry says to Brain in that moment "it was so random and perfect timing". It really was like lightening in a bottle for it to play out like it does.

Brian has been around a very long time. I've always enjoyed his style and humer.

Just A Lazy Shiftless Bastard

Alec Baldwin is the scariest funny guy ever. Even when he is telling a joke, he can seem like somebody that would snap in the blink of an eye. He is funny in this one for sure and I love the Burt Lancaster and Rip Torn stories he tells Jerry. But the dude is scary. I wouldn't want to sit across the table from him. Ever.

A Taste From Hell On High

Meh. I really didn't find anything remotely funny about this one or even what Jerry and Joel Hodgson were talking about.

Unusable On The Internet

Now THIS episode was damn funny. I have been a big fan of Bob Einstein since his days on  Bizarre, Super Dave as well as his time on Curb Your Enthusiasm. You could tell that they were having a lot of fun shooting this one. I'd be okay with him returning back to Comedians In Cars in the near future.

It's Bubbly Time, Jerry

I haven't watched this series in a while since other things seem to have taken priority. Just plain forgot about it. So, it was kinda nice to be able to go back and see a wealth of new episodes to pick and choose from. I immediately went to this one because of Michael Richards (Kramer from Seinfeld fame). This episode is unusual because of the run time which clocks in under just 20 minutes. Average episode time is around 10 minutes. Do, we get double the fun and it shows. Everything here is great. The Chess story was fascinating to watch as Michael tells it to Jerry who is hanging on every word. A lot of great funny moments that suddenly gets very real when he talks about his On-Stage meltdown 7 years ago. Even though that was in the back of my mind, I didn't think they would even go there. I'm glad they did, because you can see and hear the remorse in his eyes and voice. Overall, I would say this is one of my favorite episodes so far. Just seeing them together is making me want to bust out and do a Seinfeld marathon, something I haven't done in probably 7-8 years.

I watched a couple of episodes back to back and it was damn funny. Both Sarah Silverman and David Letterman were great. I'd love to get to hang out with Sarah. She has always been super funny and watching her with Jerry is just more proof that she would be a great one to talk to. David was just as great too. Love hearing him reminiscent about old comedians as well as certain jokes from years ago. I never really care what car they open with, but this one in particular with David was funny, especially the back story involving Paul Newman. Definitely check out both episodes. Well worth the time invested in them.

Hahaha. That was pretty good. Ya know, he may be playing a Network Bigwig, but underneath it all, he's playing Kramer and I love it for that very reason. The fact that you have Jerry sitting right across from him makes it better and just makes me want to bust out the entire Seinfeld DVD set right now.

Jay Leno: Comedy is a Concealed Weapon

Picked a random episode to watch and settled on Jay Leno's turn on the show. I didn't expect much from this as I'm not what you would call a fan of Leno in the sense that I don't follow what he is doing. I think his stand-up can be very funny, but my impression of him is largely based on The Tonight Show, which I just couldn't get into at all as I was more on Team Letterman. So, yeah, kinda went into this episode with the mindset of "show me what you got" mentality. Surprisingly, he was damn funny. The show is great when you get a comedian that is 'on' with his or her sole objective to make Jerry laugh and Jay knocked it out, repeatedly. He was making me laugh a lot. I'd definitely re-watch this episode for sure. Consider my mind blown at the fact that this was Jay's first cup of coffee.......ever! In real life or on the show. How does someone that has been around as long as Jay and in the profession that he is in, never have coffee? Think about it, late nights, doing your show, writing material and you need something (caffeine) to keep you awake and going until you complete whatever task you are doing. Jay's reaction to his first sip of said coffee was priceless. "This is gross".  ;D

Tina Fey: Feces Are My Purview

Followed up the Jay Leno episode with another random pick and went with Tina Fey. This episode was the exact opposite of the Leno one. It wasn't bad. It's just that it was more about conversation and less about cracking each other up. I like Tina and I'd like to have a beer with her someday and have the same kind of conversation depicted in this episode.

I admit it took me a few seconds to recognize Larry David', even though really, who else would it be?
