How to Draw Chiller Monsters, Werewolves, Vampires, and Zombies - David Spurlock
I came across this book accidentally in the library, picked it up because it looked interesting. And it is. Don't count on this being too much an instructional book, but more of highlights and best examples kind of advice. The illustrations are gorgeous, the comments are typically specific to the illustration pointing out the finer details to expand ones horizons on drawing. The range goes from the first drawn monsters with EC comics to today's contemporary artists. Chapters split up by Frankenstein, Werewolf, etc with additional chapters on technique. There is not a lot of words here that go on and on. I imagine someone can read the entire book in about an hour.

Lettering (http://punchandbrodie.com/leo/FamousArtistsCartoonCourse/facc_18.pdf)
Although the course is dated by today's standards as far as style, this was the crème de la crème course back in the day and it still has a lot of valuable information for those looking to get serious about their art. As for me, right now I'm reading Lettering, which explains why I'm focused a lot on Fonts (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/hardware/fonts/msg7762/#msg7762) at the moment.

There's a few versions of those Courses and they are ALL amazing.
I bought about 10 years back a full set....not for comic book art I don't think.....I bought the illustrators course....I can't think of the year it came out...but it has Norman Rockwell and a bunch of super famous guys (hence the name Fa (famous artist) Course.
will for sure download them all from this series later tonight...you can go back to that stuff for a LIFETIME and always learn new things.
awesome find...I will try and locate some of the other PDF's I found over the years of some of the variations of this course....
I have the actual binders here in my office...when you come up I'll show you what the real course looked like.
Bernie Wrightson did it as a teen, and I saw it at comic con....(Stuart Ng sells rare and out of print books) and I got it there...it was expensive...trying to remember how much it was...thinking around 3-400 hundred for all three binders (they are pretty huge)
-
Yikes! $400?!
Yeah, I was just about say "Bust that s h i t out, I wanna see those books"!
-
you can see them/
they are very rare....trust me a PDF is nice...but having the books is owning history....also because I have the rarest and more sought out course which covers oil painting and fine art/ illustration.
It's super bad ass to have them...it's one of my prize possessions along with an anatomy book I have that was done in 1915 by JC Leyendeckers (one of my personal art heroes) teacher. (John Vanderpoel)
I'll show you that too...it's VERY rare.
I have a few gems...I just pick my spots.

I've seen this (Campbell clip) before....I had forgotten he holds the pencil kind of weird.
cool drawing though!
-
I just found it last night. Apparently Marvel/Disney XD has a new segment where they talk and have some of the biggest names in the biz do a quick breakdown for whatever character. As for the way he holds the pencil, I've known about that forever and every time I see him draw, it looks painful....like he has arthritis. Not that he does....just looks it.
-
Joe Quesada (Iron Man)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKtO47wZMZI&feature=relmfu
I use to be a huge fan of Joe's. I still love his stuff, but I don't even know if he draws on a monthly book anymore. Ever since he became Editor-In-Chief, I can only imagine the workload he has had to endure running a HUGE Company like Marvel.
-
Joe Quesada (Thor)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vu66079vA2M
-
he draws books all the time actually....since he's been editor and chief...he still works probably more than Jim Lee in terms of productivity
2 or 3 times more comics than Jim if I were to take a stab at quantity/
-
Sheesh! Joe is a f u c k i n g beast! I don't want to ever hear another artist b i t c h and moan about deadlines ever again if HE can draw AND run a company. Joe ftw!!
-
yeah it's pretty crazy...he's done some pretty long runs on books.

This is a great video clocking in at 2 hours and 47 minutes. Do not let this pass you buy because I'm sure this will get pulled down eventually. Joe's really talented....there's no doubt.
he's just never been I think consistent getting the work out on the shelves so fans don't always know where he's at/.
-
Is he even on a book right now? I think I remember him drawing something akin to Steampunk type of stuff. Not sure.
-
yeah took me a sec to remember the name.

-
the marker part on the Ramos one is groovy!
I knew that would be what you sunk your teeth into now that you have every Copic marker known to man in your greasy little palms!
-
well....color is always pretty and something I am a huge fan of.
ironic I went for such intense black and whites...but what's funny and this has always been intentional. I have purposely rationed out my art focusing on specific things as I develop them.
I look at them as ingredients...but I have never shown my full dish.....I really try and celebrate each part of the process and see how far I can take it...or how cool that might look.
it always leaves me new areas to explore which I love to do...and for a fan...many new things they've never seen.
when people put it all out there at once....there's nothing left to really reveal.
it's like a sexy dance that you (as a viewer) never want to end....so it's cool to ration your style and pursuits.
hahahaha

Erik Larsen's strange Grip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPWM8FkQb4w
This isn't a tutorial, but I wanted to post this anyway. Many many years ago at Comic Con, I saw Erik drawing and his grip was so awkward and fascinating to see. At the time, I was a HUGE fan of his from his Spider-Man days and of course The Savage Dragon. So seeing the way he drew....blew my mind. It looks so painful and like he would be fighting every single line he puts down on paper. But in the end, the guy is one of, if not THE most productive artists in the business. He can crank out pages with ease. So, who cares out he holds a pencil. All that matters is what the end product looks like.

FIRST LOOK: The Animator's Survival Kit app by Richard Williams
(http://www.indiewire.com/static/dims4/INDIEWIRE/be9c55c/2147483647/thumbnail/680x478/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fd1oi7t5trwfj5d.cloudfront.net%2F0f%2Ff1%2F5947f8434a20aac8bf8893029cd1%2Fwilliams-1.jpg)
As an animator who learns best by seeing things in action, and has a natural affinity for all things technical, imagine my joy when I was asked to review this app from Richard Williams!
Let me start by saying that although I was excited, I honestly did not have high hopes for this app. I was expecting just a simple dump of the book (which is great in its own right) as a beefed up PDF file or something. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this app goes above and beyond the books, both standard and extended editions. Given its portability on the iPad (not to mention its price), it even beats the DVD set.

THE COMMENTARY TRACK: J. SCOTT CAMPBELL (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=17667)
For those that don't know how Campbell works when creating amazing pieces of art, you may find his process to be somewhat enlightening. Fans of his already know his process as its not a secret. It's actually pretty common among Comic Book Artist to draw super small and then blow up to 11x17 inches and then light box the finish pencils before turning it over to the inker and then colorist. Check out the link for more...
