I only picked this up because there really wasn't anything else on the shelf that caught my attention. I knew that this was a remake of the Original, which ironically enough, I've never seen before. I always planned on seeing John Carpenter's version long before this one. It just never played out that way and well, here we are. Assault on Precinct 13 is pretty self explanatory in the title. No need to break it down any further than that. It's a typical shoot 'em up where dirty cops are trying to kill a Kingpin being held at the precinct and they must kill him at any cost before he can rat on the corrupt cops.

I found the movie to be very predictable from start to finish and these types of movies ALWAYS has a Mole and I knew who it was within the first 5 minutes once inside the Precinct. I didn't have a problem with that. What I did have a problem with were the characters. None of them were remotely interesting. And I think they dropped the ball on really giving us an idea of just how ruthless Laurence Fishburne's character is. Sure, they show him stabbing a guy in the neck early on. But the whole premise rest on the aura of who and what he is to make every shake with fear. Ethan Hawke wasn't all that impressive either. I think the entire cast was an automatic pilot mode.

Sure, there are some good gun fights that take place, but you gotta ask yourself just how dumb these Cops are that are trying to take over the precinct. If the end game is to eliminate everyone inside, why keep trying to find a way inside, only to be outwitted and out gunned? Hard to believe that 30 cops can't take control of just 7 people. Wouldn't the smartest play be to just blow the f*cking building up and be done with it?

Anyway. Good shoot outs. Predictable plot. Bored actors. I say this is a Rent at best if you want mindless action and no character development. Having said that, I am still interested in checking out the Original film.

Oh, yea, this story spawned during the exploitation years. The original, at the time, was perfect for the drive-in. On paper, interesting. On the screen, it becomes razor thin.
